Arixmethes Sea Monsters

Commander / EDH GU (Simic)

Almost every creature in the deck has either some sort of evasion or way to disrupt the board, which often works as pseudo-evasion. The other ones have a support role like the powerhouse Tatyova, Benthic Druid or Kiora's Follower . I want to cut creatures that don't have evasion, a way to disrupt the board, or a way to avoid removal. At those high CMCs I need my creatures to stick.

In terms of consistency and power, I love having Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle ramp. It's just like having a guaranteed Explosive Vegetation. Keeping him as a land can help power out the big creatures in this deck until I find a way to protect him or give him evasion. In 1v1 matchups it can be difficult to deal with a 12/12 commander especially if it's unblockable through any one of Serpent of Yawning Depths + Pemmin's Aura + Whispersilk Cloak + Aqueous Form + Archetype of Imagination . The multiple board wipes also act as pseudo-evasion, since I can cast something like Whelming Wave first main and then swing in for 12.

However. I have some cool themes in the deck that don't seem to work well together mechanically, even though they're "thematically" similar. I had to cut Quest for Ula's Temple since it takes way too much work and/or luck to make it consistent. Which is entirely unfortunate because it really pushed me into using the 4 sea monster types almost exclusively. It's a good thing a card like Serpent of Yawning Depths was released. Whelming Wave and Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep are the other two cards that care about creature type. The synergies are powerful but are they good enough to cut Chasm Skulker for Nadir Kraken ? The kraken is cool and it helps me go wide especially if I get it out early, but the mana investment seems annoying (versus the free effect from the squid) and it doesn't have innate evasion like the tokens from Chasm Skulker do.

This brings me to the other theme: Islands Matter. There are way more cards in this deck that care about the number of islands I control and who out of my opponents controls islands. Colossal Whale is a fantastic islandwalk card and even though it's not one of the "Big 4" types, it still has a home in this deck. Inkwell Leviathan and Stormtide Leviathan both care about who has islands, although stormtide makes everything an island so that is an excellent enabler. It synergizes with Engulf the Shore and Scourge of Fleets and the recently-cut Kraken of the Straits (though I may bring it back in in favor of Pearl Lake Ancient ). Quicksilver Fountain is such a cool card - it slowly floods the table with islands and disables lands in the process all the while enabling the powerful islandwalkers if Stormtide Leviathan isn't out. But does it actually have a home here? Is that better suited in a mono blue deck? Eventually it will hit Arixmethes and my other green sources. Perhaps I could replace it with a Kefnet's Monument and find another spot for Spreading Seas .

Let me know what you think.
