Description

Winding Constrictor does trigger when Woodland Wanderer/Walking Ballista enter the battllefield. Many people have been confused and tried to point out that it doesnt work like that, but it indeed does work.

A deck focusing on trample and +1/+1 Counters for Aether Revolt.

A deck clearly centered around Winding Constrictor. I have been dying to make a deck with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar and Verdurous Gearhulk, and finally have some key to support the archetype in the constrictor and others. We also have access now too Rishkar, Peema Renegade and Walking Ballista which both offer great versatility.

We also take decent advantage of the new Fatal Push. But we work even better with the Yahenni's Expertise.

T1 Oath of Nissa->T2 Winding Constrictor-> T3 Rishkar, Peema Renegade ->T4 Yaheenni's expertise-> T4 which ever cmc=<3 spell

121.6. Some spells and abilities refer to counters being placed on an object. This refers to putting counters on that object while its on the battlefield and also to an object thats given counters as it enters the battlefield.

Booster Gold is very similar to this, but gets a bit more protective. I would suggest Bristling Hydra as well as Blossoming Defense to help counter the targeted removal that will be in the upcoming standard format.

@writetolive thanks go the comment. I am not sold on Bristling Hydra in a non energy deck, and don't really have enough spot to incorporate energy. I may play around with it and Blossoming Defense though. Haven't found time to test many other options yet.

Heroic Intervention is better than Blossoming Defense if you have access to a decent card pool

Also, Winding Constrictor doesn't give Walking Ballista counters as it enters because the counters aren't placed on the Ballista, it enters with them. However if you were to later PLACE additional counters then the Constrictor would come into play by placing one more counter onto your Ballista

Winding Constrictor Rulings

Second ruling on Winding Constrictor - it will trigger the ETB on wanderer and ballista.

@orion93 As someone already pointed out creatures that enter with counters are considered to be placed on them and therefor does trigger the Winding Constrictor. You are not the first to confuse it, or to point it out. I will add it to the main description so hopefully people will understand in the the future. Thanks for the comment!

@orion93 Also you are right. I like the one mana of blossoming. But heroic intervention will be useful vs sweepers. I will play test both. Thank you vry much.

I'm building a similar brew! Hope you got your Ballista's before the spike!!

Anyways.. when would you sub in Noose Constrictor from the sideboard? I got a play set of the FNM promo and haven't been able to find a home for him yet, so if its working in your brew maybe I could make it work for mine..

Also, I've found that having Hope of Ghirapur in the side board has been awesome against control matchups!!

@Legendary_Crush I have had very limited testing of this deck so far and had the Noose Constrictor in for the decks with flyers to protect my planeswalkers. Not entirely sold on them yet, but I didn't like any of the other options available to stop flyers.

WOW! I did not know that Walking Ballista spiked so hard. I doubt it will stay that high but I grabbed them for 3$ a piece and am glad I did. I told everyone I could how great that card was and many people just shrugged.

I will try Hope of Ghirapur, it does seem really good vs control. Maybe flyers will be non existant and I can fit a few in their spot.

Thank you very much for the comment and I will check out what you have on the go!

Love this and am building one very similar!

Winding Constrictor Rulings

2/9/2017 If an artifact or creature you control would enter the battlefield with a number of any kind of counters on it, it enters with that many plus one instead.

What do you think of additions of Aether Hub and Servant of the Conduit? Energy counters interact with Winding Constrictor as well and can help with the converge of Woodland Wanderer

moonbeee says... #40

@Blume17 I am still not entirely sure I am a fan of it. I do receive an extra energy with constrictor, but servant and constrictor compete for same spot of the curve. With servant I get a 5/5 wanderer on turn 3 vs a 5/5 pOn turn four. Also I think Bristling Hydra would be more valueable if I were to add energy elements. I aM still testing though, and will get back to you.

What do you think about adding Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet to the side board, so if you play the mirror or any other agro, you can bring in the removal/control package? Side in Kalitas and side out Woodland Wanderer and your curve would be the same.

Just an idea :)

@blume17 That is an interesting idea. I tried him in the mainboard but did not like him there as there was not enough removal to get his counter synergy workin with the deck. With the removal brought in, and trading with fast aggro decks, he might be very valuable. Thanks for the idea!

No problem! I tried that exact thing last night against B/G Delirium Aggro and it worked very well. I think they finally scooped when I had him at a 11/12 thanks to Winding Constrictor lol
