UPDATE: For the new GRN meta, here's the standard merfolk list updated! . It's sort of a hybrid between traditional merfolk, mono-U tempo, and wizards. It looks like of disjointed but I was actually impressed with how well it plays! I'm running 13 wizards to turn on Wizard's Retort and might add a third since it over-performed for me. I also have 12 cards that enable drawing and filtering which makes the deck very consistent. Even though I still have a few, I'm trying to avoid too many x/1 creatures because Goblin Chainwhirler is still around so that's why I don't have Deeproot Elite. I'm also heavily skewed toward blue in this list to enable more consistent double blue for Merfolk Trickster and Wizard's Retort. I avoid double green casting costs like Jadelight Ranger and try to keep the other green sources minimized. I cut Curious Obsession (just invites a 2-for-1) and replaced it with Chart a Course for the card draw which seems more consistent.

Overall 3-2

2-1 vs Boros Angels with Resplendent Angel, History of Benalia, and Lyra Dawnbringer

2-1 vs Jeskai control with Teferi as main wincon

1-2 vs Mono red aggro with Runaway Steamkin (first round lost due to mull to 4 and round 3 lost to a triple Wizard's lightning that I was one turn away from drawing the counter I needed to live and counterstrike for the win).

0-2 vs Boros mentor midrange (Lost to Aurelia game 1 and got wrecked by Deafening Clarion and Ajaini game 2)

2-1 vs Dimir contorl with Doom Whisperer as wincon

Ended up getting 8th place and winning a standard showdown pack with some sweet pulls (foil Chemister's insight and Divine visitation). I think I need to consider how I can play against the very fast and aggressive decks better (like mono red) and how to break through difficult board stalls against midrange and be more careful about playing around Deafening clarion (I got blown out by this spell at least three times). Against control (Jeskai and Dimir) this deck felt amazing, I brought in 3x Deeproot Waters, 3x Disdainful Stroke, 1x Hadana's Climb, 1x Negate. The combination felt very powerful with countering all their important spells like ritual of soot and key threats like Teferi while constantly cranking out value with Deeproot waters. I actually got double triggers off of Naban twice (drawing two with Silvergill adept and tapping two key threats with Watertrap weaver) so it seems like a fun one-of and a decent payoff for having so many wizards. Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca always over-performed so it's possible I should take out a Watertrap Weaver or Kopala to make room for a 3rd copy.

I think I will take Metamorphic Alteration and Plummet out of the sideboard since they did not feel like very impactful cards to bring in ever. Suggestions welcome about what to put in to help against the super fast aggro decks!
