Creature (1)

I've taken a break from Standard and started playing Modern again. It looks like it's back to being a fun and healthy format, so I thought I'd give a deck I've never played before a whirl. Jund refers to the Jund shard of Alara, which consisted only of mana. Our goal with this deck is to use our discard, alongside Liliana of the Veil, and other 1-for-1 spells to get both decks into top-deck mode. We do this because Dark Confidant will keep us ahead of our opponent for the rest of the game, and a top decked Tarmogoyf will always outclass a lonely Goblin Guide or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.

If you have any questions or comments, PLEASE say something below. I'm trying to get as much feedback on this as possible. Thank you!

- 4 Tarmogoyf. The strongest 2-drop in the game. He allows us to compete unfair or hyper-aggressive decks.

- 2-3 Scavenging Ooze. Our second strongest monster. Against linear aggro decks, he'll have plenty of food to grow and gain us life. He also helps us fight against things like Snapcaster Mage, Lingering Souls, and persist creatures.

- 4 Dark Confidant. If he remains un-answered, he will literally win us the game. He gives us card advantage at the cost of life, but I would gladly pay 2 life for a 4/5 Goyf.

- 1-2 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet. This spot has been used up by other cards in the past, but I feel that Khalitas has taken it over completely. He completely shuts off the Melira combo, his life gain is useful for us in many matchups, and he can stop pesky little Wurmcoil Engine tokens from spawning.

- 4 Liliana of the Veil. "The best Planeswalker in Modern". She helps us get our opponent into top deck mode, she can immediately answer a creature threat, and her ult all but straight up wins us the game. All this for just 3 mana.- 6 Discard, between Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek. I prefer 4 inquisitions and 2 thoughtseize's, but I've seen a lot of 3/3 splits as well.

- 2-3 Abrupt Decay. One of the most versatile removal spells in Modern. Hit's a vast majority of the playing field.

- 1-2 Kolaghan's Command. Extremely versitile spell. Against affinity it can 2-for-1 for us by Shocking and Shattering. Most of the time you'll want one of the modes to be Disentomb .

- 4 Lightning Bolt. Because it's bolt and we have red in our mana-base.

- 1-2 Maelstrom Pulse. I tend to go with one of these. It feels like a necessary evil. When it's bad, it's bad. But when it's good, boy is it good.

- 2-3 Terminate. The best un-conditional removal spell in these colors, with an added anti-regenerate built in.

- 3-4 Man-Lands. I believe Raging Ravine is the best in this slot, but I've seen lists run a Hissing Quagmire here and there.

- 4 Blackcleave Cliffs. The best land in our deck. It allows us to play any of our T1 hand disrupts or leave up a bolt, without having to fetch and shock. Full play-set is a must.

- 7-9 Fetch-Lands. 4 Verdant Catacombs is optimal, and the rest consisting of Wooded Foothills and Bloodstained Mire, depending on your mana base.

- 3-5 Shock-Lands. Just take a look at your mana base and figure out what'll work best for you.

Keep in mind that you'll have to decide which of these are best for your meta. In general, you'll want 2-3 Sweeper/Board wipes, 1-2 Affinity hate (At least 1 Ancient Grudge), 2-4 Land Destruction, 1 Olivia Voldaren (Unless aggro is an abysmal portion of your meta), 1 Night of Souls' Betrayal, 2-3 Control hate (Discard, Resilient Threats, Card Advantage), 2-3 Midrange Hate (Resilient Threats, Card Advantage), and 2-3 Combo Hate (Discard, Graveyard Hate).- Fulminator Mage. Great card against control, tron, scapeshift, infect, and basically 75% of modern.

- Thrun, the Last Troll. Great vs. control.

- Obstinate Baloth . Helps you stay safe vs. burn and also goes great hate against an opponents Liliana of the Veil.

- Olivia Voldaren. She can do some work against aggro.

- Huntmaster of the Fells  / Ravager of the Fells   . Put this in if you need more burn and midrange hate.

- Ancient Grudge. Recurrable artifact hate for affinity, lantern, and thopter decks.

- Creeping Corrosion/Shatterstorm/Fracturing Gust. Bring one of these in if Affinity is dominating your meta.

- Engineered Explosives. Can turn around games vs. affinity, zoo, merfolk, and elves.

- Jund Charm. Basically it's Pyroclasm, Tormod's Crypt, and Dragonscale Boon on an instant speed spell. Pretty versitile.

- Golgari Charm. Another tool-box, this one consisting of Regenerate, Allay , and Nausea . I like it.

- Unravel the Aether . I've seen it run. I don't know, I don't like it, personally.

- Back to Nature . RIP Bogles (if anyone still plays that).

- Feed the Clan. Great against burn, since we actually have the creatures to get the full 10 out of it. Just be careful for a Skullcrack .

- Anger of the Gods. Great sweeper, I've seen it main-board before.

- Damnation. Also a great sweeper I've seen main-boarded (are you seeing a pattern yet?). Could probably get away with a Languish if you don't have it.

- Night of Souls' Betrayal. Affinity and infect can get locked out if you get this out early.

- Leyline of the Void. Probably the best graveyard hate around.

- Duress/ThoughtseizeInquisition of Kozilek. Try and make 7-8 discard spots for the full 75. If you're keeping 6 in the main-board, that means running 1-2 here in the side.

- Slaughter Games/Surgical Extraction. Narrow, but prevelant, combo hate.

- Rakdos Charm. Another tool-box, this one consisting of Shatter, Tormod's Crypt, and Blisterstick Shaman .

- Tormod's Crypt/Relic of Progenitus/Nihil Spellbomb. Graveyard hate. I like the spellbomb, as it can cycle for us.

- -1 Abrupt Decay / +1 Terminate. Just trying this change out, see which I like more.

- -1 Fulminator Mage, -1 Engineered Explosives / +1 Courser of Kruphix, +1 Huntmaster of the Fells  . Burn has been much more prevelant in my meta, and I have rarely actually used the Engineered Explosives
