Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves

Introduction

I've been having a little difficulty building decks during the last few months, so I thought it might help to write a little accompanying text about the deck-building process as I moved through it. I intend to utilise the 9x7 approach- you can read a little more about this method here: link. Where possible, I intend to stick to a budget of no more than $5 per card.

9x7 Approach: Selecting Themes

Summon the Pack: Generating Wolves

Token Wolves

  1. Feed the Pack
  2. Howl of the Night Pack
  3. Kessig Cagebreakers
  4. Tolsimir Wolfblood
  5. Wolfbriar Elemental
  6. Wren's Run Packmaster
  7. Arlinn, Voice of the Pack A fine addition to this tribal deck, providing a steady source of tokens and a means by which to any and all subsequent fights. This card does place some limitations on the deckbuilding process, requiring some elves in order to make it onto the battlefield.Other considerations here include Wirewood Herald , Master of the Wild Hunt and Predator's Howl

Permanent Wolves

  1. Wolfir Silverheart
  2. Fang of the Pack
  3. Howlgeist
  4. Silverfur Partisan
  5. Skalla Wolf
  6. Watchwolf
  7. Thornhide Wolves

Ramp

  1. Selesnya Keyrune This mana rock makes it into my build for flavour reasons, as it turns into a wolf.
  2. Farhaven Elf
  3. Quirion Elves
  4. Wood Elves
  5. Elvish Harbinger The Harbinger pulls double-duty in this deck, providing both a boost of mana and a means by which to find the Wren's Run Packmaster. 6./7 In place of Cultivate and Kodama's Reach , i'm running Quirion Trailblazer and Wild Wanderer

Deep Reconnaissance

Card Draw

  1. Elvish Visionary
  2. Camaraderie Card draw, with an on-theme wolf in the artwork. As a bonus, provided a pump to prepare a big attack.
  3. Arctic Wolves
  4. Beast Whisperer
  5. Harmonize
  6. Lifecrafter's Bestiary
  7. Masked Admirers

Cream of the Crop

Winning the Fight

Whilst the fight-effect that Tolsmir affords the wolves is welcome, there is a level of attached risk. We need to find ways in which to make these fights go in our favour. 1. Wolfir Silverheart * 2. Primal Forcemage , which will pump up your wolves as they enter the battlefield. As 5/5s, these are then much more likely to survive a fight. 3. Wren's Run Packmaster 4. Collective Blessing 5. Dictate of Heliod 6. Gaea's Anthem 7. Howlpack Resurgence

Mayor of Avabruck

Emmara Tandris

Ivy Lane Denizen

Vigor

Wilt-Leaf Liege

Creature Removal

  1. Moonlight Hunt
  2. The Wanderer

Permanent Removal

  1. Naturalize
  2. Disenchant
  3. Sundering Growth
  4. Sylvan Reclamation
  5. Reclamation Sage
  6. Stomp and Howl
  7. Nature's Claim

Flash Wolves

  1. Briarpack Alpha
  2. Pack Guardian
  3. Spirit of the Hunt
  4. Wolfir Avenger

Other Considerations

  1. Panharmonicon
  2. Stretching the budget a little, we might also consider Nissa, Vastwood Seer   as a source of ramp. Undisturbed, she can becomes a planeswalker or can be used to champion our Packmaster
  3. Lone Wolf
  4. Master of the Hunt and Wolf Pack would be each perfect for this deck, but comes with a hefty price-tag
  5. Wolfcaller's Howl
