BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GODS

Standard* Four Color Theme/Gimmick

Nadorou

Sideboard

Maybeboard

A persistent deck that aims to win by whittling down the opponent through self-sacrifice. I'm still working out exactly which lands to use to keep it as consistent as possible. I also feel like it's missing something from its early game, so any suggestions are very welcome.

Tymaret, the Murder King and Butcher of the Horde are your sacrifice engines, with Bloodsoaked Champion and Tymaret himself being the main targets to sacrifice. Grim Haruspex fits well into the theme, granting some nice card draw while you do your thing.

Abzan Ascendancy works quite well for ensuring you have a way to bring both Bloodsoaked Champion and Tymaret, the Murder King back to the field, in addition to providing some minor additional damage. The counters are a bonus but are usually not too important. Mardu Ascendancy has similar uses, but which ascendancy that is best depends a little on the situation. In general, Mardu will be better whenever you don't have a sac engine on the field, since it provides you with tokens even if your opponent decides not to block your Bloodsoaked Champions. It's also a very nice thing to have on the field to prevent your key pieces from getting exiled by Anger of the Gods. Abzan, on the other hand, becomes amazing once you have some of your key pieces on the board, allowing multiple evasive tokens per turn that can also be sacrificed for various benefits (although keep in mind that this won't draw cards through Grim Haruspex or synergize with Athreos, God of Passage).

Once your gods, Purphoros, God of the Forge and Athreos, God of Passage go down, you'll quickly start to rack up heavy damage as you keep sacrificing and bringing back your creatures.

Updates Add

  • Moved Reaper of the Wilds to the sideboard for now. While it's a good creature that allows you to scry a lot in this deck, it just never felt like a card I ever wanted to draw. The deck will usually win by stalling until you can get your sacrifice combos going or by punching through with your butchers, and this card did not feel like it was contributing enough to either of those things.

  • Moved Mardu Charm to the sideboard. It's very useful in certain situations and has some synergy with Purphoros, but for a 3-color casting cost it usually felt a little underwhelming.

  • Satyr Wayfinder is now in the mainboard. Been very satisfied with it so far. Fixes your mana and works well with Bloodsoaked Champion and Tymaret, the Murder King. The 1/1 body it leaves is also nice sacrifice fodder. Considering throwing in more of these, but we will see.

  • Gods Willing is in the mainboard. Good way of protecting your butchers from removal and your sacrifice targets from some of the exile effects. Not 100 % sure if it's mainboard material in this deck, though. For the moment I'll keep it in there and do some more testing.
