Sideboard

Pretty typical Izzet Phoenix list for modern.

Changelog

Minor sideboard updates. Force of Negation is popular, and Urza Thopter and Eldrazi Tron are good decks. I'm still not sure exactly what matches Force goes in, but I'm looking to try it out. There's been less graveyard decks in my LGS than needed for 2x Ravenous Trap and 2x Surgical Extraction side.

Also Blood Moon is still great when it's good.

I've been disappointed by Set Adrift . While Fiery Islet is good, the damage from running 2 has come up more than I'm happy with. The deck already has Faithless Looting to reduce flood. Going down to 1.

Aria of Flame felt really powerful, although there were definitely matchups where it felt too slow to be useful. Going to keep trying that out for awhile. I've heard good reviews for Lava Dart . It isn't free on the front half, but it counts for two spells for one mana (minus a mountain), which can turbo charge all your other threats. Going to try try replacing the Gut Shots with that for the next event.

Testing out a few changes that came with Modern Horizons. Fiery Islet is a strong land to combat flooding, but the life loss is a real cost. 2 seems like a good place to start. Magmatic Sinkhole seems like an obvious upgrade over Lava Axe . Lava Axe's sacrifice is almost always a cost, as it's pretty rare you've got an Arclight Phoenix to discard, and sinkhole also hits planeswalkers (especially a Narset, Parter of Veils at 5 loyalty).

Aria of Flame is a card I think is being underrated. You only need to cast 7 instants or sorceries after you land an Aria as long as your opponent has taken 2 damage from any other source. That seems really easy to do. It weaponizes your cantrips in a similar way to Pyromancer Ascension , but it makes you more resilient to graveyard hate.

Shenanigans is also on my radar.

Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis is also a real deck, so I imagine graveyard hate is going to increase, and I need to pack more graveyard hate myself.

After a few discussions, I've decided to go back to 2 Anger in the sideboard. Anger is just too important in creature matchups, and they're more common than the really grindy games that Saheeli shines in. Will likely continue to tweak this moving forward.

Sleight of hand works much better with Finale of Promise. Removing a Thought Scour was a big mistake. Surgical isn't as necessary main board anymore, and Set Adrift is more versatile.

WAR brought a lot of strong plainswalkers. Saheeli tokens are great in more grindy matchups, and Thing can't bounce Saheeli so she sticks around better. Karn is also strong and makes artifacts/Tron more popular, so there's a shift toward dealing with colorless permanents in the side. Narset is great in the mirror and against any control opponent. The sideboard feels a little stretched, and I don't like going down to one Anger.
