Description

My first set was Eldrich moon and I fell in love with vampires because of it. I got my hands on Olivia Voldaren and fell in love. I'd read about how she's an epic commander and set out to make a deck around her. I put together a deck out of some of the cards I had lying around and it's doing very well. Filled with grave return to keep the party going, Olivia smashes those not worthy of an invitation.

Please lemme know what you think and what you'd suggest. Hopefully you'll secure your own seat at her masquerade and join the ranks of the vampire master race!

Updates

After the hundreds of games I've now played with this deck the lack of consistency that Vampire Nocturnus left something to be desired. I'm going to try giving Bloodlord of Vaasgoth a shot, as the only thing worse than strong vampires are strong vampires that enter with 3 +1/+1's on them.

Hello and welcome to the commander format! Your deck looks nice and it's a good starting point for a vampire themed deck. The one question you need to answer before we can give you better suggestions, is what are the goals of the deck? Where do you it going? Is it aggro or is it control, tribal or not etc.

That said I'll do my best to give some suggestions that are both on theme and rather good cards, while also taking budget into consideration. Here goes:

Olivia Voldaren is a commander who favours control and rewards having large amounts of mana. Her first ability pings creatures and makes her grow. Cards like Basilisk Collar, Gorgon's Head and Quietus Spike enable her to clean the board clean, 2 mana at a time for a huge swing.

Her second ability steals vampires for 5 man; 7 if you need to convert it before hand. A card like Crypt Ghast, or the more on-theme Nirkana Revenant can work wonders. Doubling your black mana is no joke, especially if you invest in getting Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.

Some of the best vampires, albeit not the most regal of the lot, come from the original zendikar. Malakir Bloodwitch is a powerhouse!!! Anowon, the Ruin Sage is another one.I see you have Sanguine Bond in the deck. Why not include Blood Tribute as well? With bond and vampires in play, tribute translates to target opponent loses the game.

One extra addition you could consider, Captivating Vampire can complement Olivia's ability.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it was a little bit insightful. Also, don't forget to answer the questions from early on. What do you want the deck to be? How do you like to play with it? What is your budget and how strong is the power level of your local playgroup (fun/casual Vs cutthroat)? Once these are clarified, the community will be able to help you a lot more. Lastly, try advertising your deck here: Advertise your commander deck.

I'm a huge fan of the vampire tribal and I'm big into Olivia's control aspect. The vampires I have are more brute-force and aggro. The budget isn't too high at the moment but there's always the possibility of slow expansion. The cards in the sideboard are actually on the way to me right now, so there's that. The play group is more casual/fun. I don't see this going to any LGS just yet. Thanks for the help!

Additionally, i kind of threw this together with what I'd had and you suggested some killer cards! You're the best! thanks!

Based on the maybeboard you're aware of how Olivia can ping anything to death when she has deathtouch, which is great. Little out of thme, but Goblin Sharpshooter can kill the whole board with deathtouch, and its great to have redundancy for that kind of effect. Caged Sun only doubles one color of mana, but that might be enough, especially if you have Urborg out or you've got Crypt Ghast to double your Swamps already.

Hopefully some suggestions for cards to cut can help you fit a few of those goodies that are incoming: Nighthowler, Artisan of Kozilek, Pathrazer of Ulamog. In a vacuum those cards may be good, but I don't feel that they really fit the rest of the deck so they could be replaced.

Also, please don't forget to leave a comment for the deck above yours on the advertisement thread as per the thread rules.

Sorry, i must have missed that part of the thread! And yeah, they're kind of heavy hitters in the event I can't get any other endgame out. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestions Faytl! I'm not sure how well the goblin would fit but the sun would definitely help the manafix!

Some little synergies, Falkenrath Gorger would work really well with your Markov Dreadknight. Secondly it would really complement Olivia, Mobilized for War which you can put in your deck if you are going for a more aggro approach and as a second commander option if you need an earlier, more aggressive, start against a specific deck.

Lastly, Bloodchief Ascension + Mindcrank is a game winning combo, though less fun for your opponents in a more casual setting. Mindcrank is also good in a multiplayer setting for it gives your opponents incentive to attack each other and not you.

I see that you have both of the first two suggestions in your side board. My bad. Though Bloodchief Ascension + Mindcrank are worth looking into.

I would maindeck most of the cards in your sideboard; Stromkirk Captain, Bloodline Keeper  Flip, Captivating Vampire, Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief, Drana, Liberator of Malakir, and Rakdos Signet. The lord effects are too good not to run, Bloodchief Drana can inflict massive amounts of damage with enough mana, and always use any signets within your colors.

As for suggestions for the deck, Anowon, the Ruin Sage is a pretty nasty budget vampire. Keeps your opponents' boards in check, and any creatures you control that he forces you to sac combos with Butcher of Malakir.

Blade of the Bloodchief is a ridiculous equipment that can turn into OTK commander damage if your opponents aren't careful. It's just so stupid cheap to cast and equip.

Rakish Heir and Necropolis Regent are two pseudo-lords with permanent pump effects; very powerful if left unchecked.

Malakir Bloodwitch is pro-white and can net you ridiculous amounts of life if you're playing against enough opponents.

For repeatable hard removal, Dark Impostor is your card of choice. In a pinch, if your commander is about to get put into the command zone, but you don't feel like recasting her due to too much commander tax, you can use his ability to exile her and copy her abilities.

Blood Artist is an EDH staple, and he's a vampire; no reason not to run him.

The mana cost of Blood Tribute prevents it from being played in most constructed environments, but it's perfect for vampire EDH. Saves you in tough situations.

Terminate. I don't need to explain why this is a great card.

Sangromancer is another vampire that creates a nice buffer for your life total.

Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are two excellent equipment you'll need to keep protecting your commander.

Dreadbore is another great piece of hard removal.

This might be budget deck, but if you can get your hands on a copy of Sorin Markov, he compliments the vampire theme nicely and can be a little unfair by instantly popping off his -3 ability for quick kills.

Thanks so much for the input! All the side boarded cards are end route via mail so saying what to sub out is supremely helpful! I didn't know of many of these cards, especially sorin. I thought the only sorin was bw. I love sorin as a character so I'll totally find him a spot! I really appreciate the input!

Illusionist's Bracers would be KILLER for both of Olivia's abilities! Do them again for free! Recommend that one highly.

If you'd wanna check you my budget Mardu EDH deck, that would be much appreciated! Alesha, Who Smiles at Her Bank Account (UPDATING)

Are you not doing the Exquisite Blood & Sanguine Bond combo? Its vampire flavor for the win.

like70bunnies says... #18

I didn't think Exquisite Blood was necessary given all of the other crazy stuff I have going on but I do agree that the flavor is too good not to use. I'm likely to buy it but I need something to remove for it.

I've run an Olivia deck for a while now, and I can tell you, Heartstone is worth its weight in gold. Halves the cost of her first ability, and the total to convert and control a non-vampire creature goes from 7 down to 5.

I'd been considering Heartstone. I heard of it and wanted to run it in my eight and a half tails deck but I can definitely see the value here. Definitely gonna look into it, thanks for the suggestion!

Wooden Stake is great for "blocking" creatures Olivia has already converted.

March 15, 2017 6:30 p.m.

Conjurer's Closet is great for abusing Enter The Battlefield triggers such as your gearhulks or Malakir Bloodwitch. You have enough ETB's that I think it's worth a look.
