Sideboard

Bant Spirits has been pushed aside lately, but there is still room for fair interactive creature decks in modern. The rise of Hogaak is generally bad for Spirits, but also bad for U/R Phoenix, which is good. Counters to Hogaak are being played: Jund, Humans, Control, and Prison. These are generally favorable matchups, but need a non-traditional style of attack to be effective.

This version of Spirits has no Aether Vials, Phantasmal Image, and only 1 Path to Exile in the main to maximize creature density and consistency for Collected Company, have lots of aggression, grind better, and draw less dead cards. Rattlechains returns to give flash and 2-for-1 potential. A few new key pieces include Waterlogged Grove and Spectral Sailor for card draw. Unsettled Mariner is a nice Thalia effect pretty often and can stack if 2 are out. Deputy of Detention is a catch-all for permanents like Ensnaring Bridge, Planeswalkers, tokens, etc. Kira protects essential non-spirits like Deputy and Collector Ouphe.

After a 2-2 bland finish on Thursday losing to Infect and Blue Moon...again... I had a series of fun matches on Friday. going 3-0 (6-0) was nice, but the best part was the quality of matches and working on more tight play. For example, game 2, match 1 vs. burn, I was able to drop a turn 2 Rhox War Monk and managed to not get it killed by avoiding blocking with it into a bolt. I was then able to race some swiftspears while continuing to apply pressure. Match 2 versus BBE Jund I was able to fight through a Lilliana, the Last Hope with a Kira on turn 2. Game 2 in that match, I just had a hand full of gas. Boarding out down to 1 Path was excellent. Opponent ended up not landing a decent threat and Geist of Saint Traft raced his BBE. I never even got the chance to play Rest in Peace to neuter Goyfs. It was good lesson in sideboarding to be the aggressor.
Match 3 was legendary. Remands and Nahiri are tough to fight through, but Geist of Saint Traft does pretty well at that. I was luckily able to path 2 Snapcasters on the same turn who were ambushing Geist. Later I was able to kill 1 Nahiri and tap down his lands by getting Coco countered after he cast Nahiri 2. I landed 2 Drogskol Captains on my turn to pump a Mausoleum Wanderer and GoST to 13 damage for an exact win. Match two I again boarded out path more aggressively than normal. Turn 2 RIP made for a long match of trading 1-for-1. I built a good board state and Quelled an Anger of the Gods with a Drogskol and Mausoleum Wanderer as protection. None of that matters when Supreme Verdict comes down. Fortunately, my followup was Nissa, Steward of Elements. She singlehandedly won the match. Scrying lands, setting up free creatures, and having the ultimate forever looming was awesome. She helped fight through 2 Nahiri, 2 Jace, and 1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion. Between scrying to the bottom and flipping free cards, she gave us about 8 cards and soaked up about 7 damage. In the end, that card advantage won out as the opponent was empty handed and got to attack for about 18 with the help of Nissa's ultimate. New sideboard champion against control.
