How it works

It's a pretty straightforward control deck. You remove threats while slowly building a board yourself.

How the deck aims to win - Remove their threats with Metallic Rebuke, Unlicensed Disintegration, Lightning Strike or the occasional Walk the Plank

  • Drop Inventor's Apprentice as early as possible, it acts as a (necessary) blocker while also being able to push damage through

  • Drop Renegade Freighter, crew it with your Apprentice, and push damage through. Please note: you usually don't want to spend your third turn playing the Freighter, but rather keeping mana open to restrain your opponent. Once the coast is clear, you can ram them with the Choo Choo Train.

  • Once their wincon is on the board, Hostage Taker it and make it your wincon. Use removal spells and Rebuke to protect your Taker. Also Torrential Gearhulk is usually a game ender, but since I'm broke and only have 1 I'm only playing the one.

  • Ornithopter is here as a blocker, as an enabler for Unlicensed Disintegration, Metallic Rebuke and Spire of Industry.

  • Opt and Hyroglyphic Illumination provide necessary carddraw. Prize has been surprisingly okay so far, but you don't want to play more than 3.

  • If all goes to shit you can always play Bontu's Last Reckoning to save yourself. If you nuke your own Gearhulk though, it's usually game over.

How to upgrade it

The obvious upgrades here would be to add 2x Torrential Gearhulk, add 2 more Spire of Industry, add 2x Bontu's Last Reckoningand complete playsets of the corresponding checklands, so 3x Drowned Catacomb and 4x Dragonskull Summit. Not sure if you want to play more Spirebluff Canal, but it's just not worth the price for me anyhow.
