Description

This is a deck that i created to play in modern tournaments. I like Grixis colors and combinations and i love to cast Cruel Ultimatum on my oppponents in the time that they think they will win the match. i will not explain the card combination i play for the reason that i change very often that combination until i find the best.

All questions-recomendations are always welcome! Enjoy! Thank you!

What is this decks Main win condition(s)?

Subtlety says... #2

Caseiscool90 I didn't understand exactly what do you want to know. Let me tell you that the main win condition is controling the board until a Cruel Ultimatum resolves. But i have won many times just by attacking with manlands or Batterskull. The artifact kept me alive too many times because of vigilance/lifelink until a Cruel Ultimatum resolves.

Good deck, but I think that I would take off Far / Away, Shadow of Doubt and Mana Leak to put Deprive (it is better than Mana Leak) and more creatures to have more synergy with Cruel Ultimatum

marcobou I have Far / Away for hexproof. may be it must be replaced by Devour Flesh or from harder to cast Geth's Verdict. i agree with you about Mana Leak but Deprive is harder to cast and delays the game as you must return a land in your hand to cast it as an additional cost and is harder to cast as it needs 2 blue mana but i will try it! thanks for the suggestion! i was thinking about putting Disrupting Shoal as i can cast it without mana but i need to do big changes to this deck for better synergy. So i will remove 2 Mana Leak a Far / Away and a Shadow of Doubt to put 4 Deprive and test this deck again to see how it is going.

Looks really solid. I love control decks. I'll test it on xmage and might be able to give you some solid feedback. (I usually don't play modern because I prefer stax, combo or hard-core control decks in legacy and vintage but the list looks fun enough to play to get me to modern)

@ Subtlety - I have a question for you and I'm 100% serious.

How many cards in your deck can deal with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver? (Answer is 4, the burn is to slow)

How many of the cards in your deck can deal with Ensnaring Bridge? (Answer is 6, excluding sideboard)

Now ask yourself one question: Don't you want to be the one using these cards in the Grixis or even better the Jeskai mirror?

June 14, 2016 4:43 p.m.

Subtlety says... #8

Deprive didn't work as it delayed me to cast Damnation and clean the board so i returned to Mana Leak.

kengiczar What do you suggest to remove and put Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and Ensnaring Bridge in its place?

I would put one mountain in. I was playtesting against a mono-red aggro deck and in two out of the three matches, your deck really suffered from not being able to cast your cheap red spells early. In both of the matches I did draw a bloodstained mire and was unable to grab a mountain out of the library. Other than that this is pretty sweet, and is able to take over a game pretty quickly.

gr33nfir3 It seems weird that you had problem with red mana. Actually i followed the Site's pie on the right and removed 1xMountain to put one more Swamp. I never had problem with red mana but thanks for the suggestion. I will play more games and test this deck without Mountain and if the things go wrong i will put it back.

First of all +1 for this cool oldschool ultimatum list. Perhaps you want to try one Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip for one snappy, he offers you the possibility to cast a ultimatum again, without additional . Because my experience with Utimatum lists is thats sometimes one resolving Ultimatum is not enough to close out the game.Because of that i want to recommand 1 - 2 more creature wincon/stabilisation like : Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet,Wurmcoil Engine,Pia and Kiran Nalaar,Thing in the Ice  Flip.

good luck further with this list !

Subtlety says... #12

you are right about jace but the flash of snapy saved me many times. I tried a Kalitas list before and it was pretty good. I didn't keep it because i wanted more classic control spells on the deck. My idea was to play T4 spells on T3 beacause casting a Kalitas on T4 against fast aggro decks maybe could save the match. So i made a list with Talisman of Dominance Talisman of Indulgence Dimir Signet and Izzet Signet. With that combination i was able to cast Damnation Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Cryptic Command on T3 saving the day against heavy creature decks and burn. If any1 interested i could post the list here.

I share your love for casting Cruel and came up with this Teddy Cruel Control

Ask me any questions just mention me. Feel free to take any ideas just give credit where credit is do! :)

Teddyjunior11 says... #14

marcobou. Why would you play Deprive do you like getting 3 for 1d. Three being one less land. Double UU. And then countered still less land. Mana leak is strictly better ATM

April 10, 2017 1:39 a.m.

You should rock 2-3 Tasigur, the Golden Fang. There isn't a better beatstick in Grixis.

April 14, 2017 4:28 p.m.

Teddyjunior11 says... #16

GreenisGod this deck is using cruel ultimatuum as a win condition and therfore does not need Tasigur

April 17, 2017 9:31 a.m.

Subtlety says... #17

Tasigur doesn't fit to this decktype but it is an excellent card for other grixis control or midrange decks. If i would put a creature card inside, that would be Kalitas but i need to make some changes first to fit it. Also, i think that Batterskull fits more to the pure control type of the deck.

April 17, 2017 2:31 p.m.

Kalitas is a boss. He can definitely win you some games

April 17, 2017 3:52 p.m.

Need more wincons. Cruel Ultimatum Is technically a wincon but you need a way to close out the the game. This simply won't beat the clock

May 9, 2017 3:56 p.m.

Subtlety says... #20

Do you suggest anything?

May 9, 2017 4:05 p.m.

Everything in this list looks great. Mainboard Batterskull Accompanied by a single Tasigur, the Golden Fangmove Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver to the side as she Really shines in the midrange matchups such as BG/x. (Stealing tarmogoyf's is good.) But doesn't do much in the High aggro/Finge match ups. -1 Shadow of doubt. Maybe it's just me but I'd never want to see more than one on average, especially considering you're running the full playset of snaps

May 9, 2017 4:51 p.m.

Subtlety says... #22

It seems a good exchange.. Ashiok foR batterskull.. But I can't find space for Tasigur and i don't want to remove shadow of doubt as i really like this card. Do you suggest replacing anything else??

May 9, 2017 5:45 p.m.

Subtlety says... #23

Or something different than Tasigur..

May 9, 2017 5:46 p.m.

I play Draw go control myself, I generally recommend 2 Non land win cons but Plenty of people and lists go down to 1. I like what you got going on here and don't think it should be broken up. Maybe a singleton Grave Titan? You could test with just the one. Batterskull has the bounce ability for resilience so

Darkened1 says... #25

You are just like me, and this Cruel Control list is nearly identical to what my Grixis deck used to look like. I can tell you from years of experience that although this is extremely powerful, it's way too slow. I wouldn't carry nine 4 and up CMC cards in the deck. 7 max. It just won't keep up with the ton of fast creature aggression out there. Trim out 1 Damnation and 1 Cryptic, or cut both Damnation from the main. You want to abuse Ultimatum as much as possible here, so I would even replace Batterskull with Wurmcoil which is on curve the turn before Ultimatum, that way you can swing, then second main phase Ultimatum!

May 24, 2017 9:05 a.m.

Subtlety says... #26

Darkened1 Thanks for your feedback. :) What do you suggest for replacement of 4CMC cards?

May 24, 2017 2:51 p.m.

Darkened1 says... #27

I understand that all the resources are important, so you should trim the following: -1 Spell Snare, -1 Logic Knot, -1 Serum Visions, -1 Cryptic Command, and -1 Damnation. Then add 2 Thoughtseize and 2 Inquisition, and 2 Remand. This should feel less clunky and will smooth things out.

May 24, 2017 3:20 p.m.

Darkened1 says... #28

Sorry, I put you at 61 cards! Drop your Dreadbore into the sideboard.

May 24, 2017 3:27 p.m.

Subtlety says... #29

I have tested before the deck with 2x thoughtseize and 2x inquisition of kozilek but i had some problems against mill and not only. Maybe it was a bad play of me. damnation has helped me many times so i don't want to put it out. I will think it very carefully to fit again those 4 discards. My first thoughts are -1x cryptic -1x logic knot -1x spell snare as you said and -1x ashiok. I will test it and i will report back soon! :)

Two shadow of doubt seems bad. Like usually only one is good in some cases as a cantrip and to lower opponent's tempo play, but 2 just seems like the second would be worse than the first

In a Grixis Control deck like this, Ancestral Vision is absolutely invaluable. It's a 3-for-1 in a world of 1-for-1s.

From mattman856: Two shadow of doubt seems bad. Like usually only one is good in some cases as a cantrip and to lower opponent's tempo play, but 2 just seems like the second would be worse than the first.

I have 2 Shadow of Doubt because i have tested with 2 copies and it did well against Tron which is the biggest weakness of this deck. It really helped me counter the land tutors at the beginning plus the draw. Do you suggest something else instead of 1 copy of it?

From Pieguy396: In a Grixis Control deck like this, Ancestral Vision is absolutely invaluable. It's a 3-for-1 in a world of 1-for-1s.

Yes i know. But its a matter of price. It is very expensive right now and i don't have the budget to buy 3-4 copies of it, so i prefer to have in the list cards that i already have in my collection. I will consider in the future to get some. Thanks for your feedback.

You definitely need more Inquisitions, Thoughtseizes, and Logic Knots. These cards are amazing. Also, WHERE'S THE THOUGHT SCOUR PLAYSET!?!

Cantrips, fuels snapcaster, digs through deck, helps delve, super great playset that I highly recommend should be included.

Cutting the one Shadow of Doubt is a start to this. Also you can cut the one-of Dreadbore. It's sorcery speed so Terminate is by far better, and even though it can target walkers, they get a loyalty activation already anyways.

September 5, 2017 10:48 p.m.

Subtlety says... #34

After some research that i made i ended up that Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize don't fit so much to this type of deck so i decided to put em out and replace em with remands and draws. Maybe 2 of them can fit in the main but i think for now that these 2 cards are most for decks that can drop something in the second or 3rd round like jound's Tarmogoyf and Liliana of the Veil. Definetly if i was playing with Tasigur, the Golden Fang Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet or Delver of Secrets  Flip those cards would shine because they give you all the info you need for a next round drop. Any suggestions questions recommendations are always welcome and of course any disagreements! :)
