X.=Lazav, Dimir Mastermind; What's yours is mine

Lazav, What's yours is mine, is built to focus heavily on Lazav. Not only do we want to trigger our commander's ability as much as possible, but we also want to take advantage of all the cards sitting in the graveyard.

To aid in this goal, we have lots of mill, spot removal and counterspells to ensure things get to where we want them to be. There's not a lot of graveyard removal as we want things to be sitting in there, but are also okay with eldrazi hitting the graveyard as we can steal them before they're shuffled away.

This deck is pretty simplistic to pilot and fun to hand out to players who are bored of GR overrun or token spawn non-interaction. There's not a lot of crazy combos or weird interactions, but it doesn't need to be for a fun Lazav copy deck.

We want our land base in this to be pretty evenly split due to Lazav's UUBB cost and wanting to cast and trigger him ASAP

Notable Cards & Combos

  • Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver lets us steal problems before they even show up. Ashiok fits perfectly into the theme and feel of this deck
  • Consuming Aberration is a huge threat; it generally doesn't last a round on the field but that means it'll eat up a kill spell (and let us get it back with things like Fated Return). If it does last the turn however, it's an amazing mill effect.
  • Extract from Darkness is thematic and profitable. Mill for Lazav, then steal any creature in a graveyard (including ours)
  • Extractor Demon is great to hang around with an alright body too. Can be unearthed before a board wipe for more advantage (as both will trigger).
  • Glaring Spotlight lets us get rid of pesky hexproof creatures to hit with our copy spells or our kill spells. Can be used in a pinch to save us too.
  • In Garruk's Wake board wipes everyone else's field and let us trigger Lazav's ability :D.
  • Knowledge Exploitation can fit the bill of whatever we need it to be. Know the white player has lots of board wipes - go fish it up; want to steal that Rise of the Dark Realms because THIEVERY, Grab it; REALLY have to deal with an indestructible creature? Go fetch a path or swords; Or just steal that time stretch you know the combo player has
  • Life's Finale lets us board wipe AND fill the graveyard with problems. Two'fer.
  • Mercurial Pretender is a great blocker and lets us abuse flicker abilities we can steal. If we can get Mirror Gallery on the field this becomes much more fun
  • Mirror Gallery was always going to go in this deck (especially pre-legendary rules change). What we really want is loads of copies of Lazav. This might get removed and rebuilt more heavily focussed on Mirror Gallery, but at the moment it stays in here so when it happens, it feels good.
  • Praetor's Grasp allows us to get whatever we need for our situation; in a same vein as Knowledge Exploitation, but also can grab enemy's lands or cards that hose our decks (Rest in Peace effects for example)
  • Profane Memento is a neat life gain effect in such a mill heavy deck. It can keep us afloat against trickle decks.
  • Psychic Intrusion is much better after I re-evaluated it. I realised it didn't end at EOT, and suddenly the ability became a lot better
  • Psychic Spiral - mill AND recovery, all in one.
  • Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank is an infinite combo by itself; but only use it if we are in dire straights; too boring to keep doing

Testing Out

  • Phthisis is expensive, but the life loss can be handy
  • Dimir Guildmage can draw a card or force discard. Don't know how I feel about the sorcery speed but want to see
  • Oblivion Stone is a board wipe that will let us keep Lazav. But also slow and expensive.
  • Thassa, God of the Sea the scry and unblockable is great, but it doesn't really fit the deck thematically
  • Mercurial Pretender I like the IDEA of the deck, but yet to see it work out
