KrazyCaley's Deckbuilders' Challenge- THIS is a deck.

by KrazyCaley

21 January 2010

While we await the results from the interim challenge, I have a new one for you. But first, some administrative details on the challenges

1- I will try to implement awards sooner rather than later, but it may take me a good while before I get around to it.

2- Because a LOT of people want to do their own challenges, here's my new challenge plan. Two out of three challenges, I will post and judge myself. Every third challenge will be one I accept from a member of the community, and judge concurrently with the member who submitted it. So if you want to submit a challenge, submit your name (but NOT your idea for the challenge!) to me at crypticcommander@hotmail.com. I'll pick the people who do it every third challenge and you can give me your idea then.

On to business.

This week, a very open-ended challenge that I believe you will nevertheless find fairly difficult. The rules:

Rule 1- Your deck must be legacy-legal. A couple of folks are having trouble with that, so let's review precisely what that means-

a- Your deck may have no more than 4 of any given card, unless the card states otherwise (as with 2010-core-set/relentless-rats.jpgRelentless Rats) or unless it's a basic land.

b- Your deck must have a minimum of 60 cards in it.

c- Your deck may not include ANY of the cards listed here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=judge/resources/sfrlegacy. Plus, no cards from the un-sets are allowed, of course.

So be sure to follow those rules when building decks that must be legacy-legal, as that's what I mean by saying that.

Rule 2- For this challenge, your deck must contain a minimum of two hundred and fifty (250) cards.

Rule 3- In addition to the legacy banned list, I am banning the following cards for this challenge-

ninth-edition/battle-of-wits.jpgBattle of Wits

shadowmoor/beseech-the-queen.jpgBeseech the Queen

portal/cruel-tutor.jpgCruel Tutor

dissension/supply-1.jpgSupply//dissension/demand.jpgDemand

time-spiral/demonic-collusion.jpgDemonic Collusion

revised-edition/demonic-tutor.jpgDemonic Tutor

planeshift/diabolic-intent.jpgDiabolic Intent

2010-core-set/diabolic-tutor.jpgDiabolic Tutor

classic-sixth-edition/enlightened-tutor.jpgEnlightened Tutor

urza-s-saga/gamble.jpgGamble

champions-of-kamigawa/gifts-ungiven.jpgGifts Ungiven

starter-1999/grim-tutor.jpgGrim Tutor

morningtide/idyllic-tutor.jpgIdyllic Tutor

dissension/infernal-tutor.jpgInfernal Tutor

tempest/intuition.jpgIntuition

shards-of-alara/invincible-hymn.jpgInvincible Hymn

classic-sixth-edition/mystical-tutor.jpgMystical Tutor

scourge/parallel-thoughts.jpgParallel Thoughts

portal/personal-tutor.jpgPersonal Tutor

eighth-edition/planar-portal.jpgPlanar Portal

prophecy/rhystic-tutor.jpgRhystic Tutor

exodus/survival-of-the-fittest.jpgSurvival of the Fittest

portal/sylvan-tutor.jpgSylvan Tutor

mirrodin/tooth-and-nail.jpgTooth and Nail

classic-sixth-edition/vampiric-tutor.jpgVampiric Tutor

apocalypse/wild-research.jpgWild Research

classic-sixth-edition/worldly-tutor.jpgWorldly Tutor

Rule 4- You will be judged on creativity, deck effectiveness, and theme adhesion. Please note that I will look disfavorably, creativity-wise, at predictable decks (woo, you threw together 4x of every sliver ever printed, congratulations). I will also be looking for theme adhesion. I.e., if you found a clever way to make a 250-card deck an advantage, I will like that. But do keep in mind that in addition to all those tutors, I did ban ninth-edition/battle-of-wits.jpgBattle of Wits and shards-of-alara/invincible-hymn.jpgInvincible Hymn. That would be way too easy, after all. Also keep in mind, if you're sulking over all the banned tutors, that I did not ban ALL such effects, just most of them. There are a few left, but they'll be much more difficult for you to use.

Additional rule- ignore the basic land cap rule. You may have any number of basic lands in your deck.

Get to work!

Deadline at the end of January. Get your decks in before February, in other words.

2 questions.

  1. Since worldwake will be out by the beginning of Feb., is that included.

  2. Me being one who submits too many decks, is there a deck limit per person.

KrazyCaley says...
11:32 p.m. on January 21, 2010

Good questions. I will allow Worldwake cards so long as they appear at the Wizards' official visual spoiler (http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/worldwake/spoiler) by the time the challenge ends.

2- There is no deck limit per person.

This is going to be effected by basic land caps btw, lol

Siegfried says...
1:24 a.m. on January 23, 2010

Is it okay to make changes to a deck after it's been submitted?

KrazyCaley says...
3:03 a.m. on January 23, 2010

Yep, change it all you want. But if you change it after the deadline, you run the risk of me looking at the wrong version of your deck, so try to have it finalized by then.

Artificer's Caltrops And how do we get around the land caps? I need 30x more island in my deck, so just note that when you look if we cannot get around it XP.

KrazyCaley says...
5:51 p.m. on January 23, 2010

All right, all right. Fair enough. I will suspend the basic land cap rule, but only for THIS challenge.

mwkelley says...
10:22 p.m. on January 23, 2010

Why was there a basic land cap? I've never heard of that rule.

mwkelley says...
10:25 p.m. on January 23, 2010

Oh, maybe I just came in late. Did KC originally proposed a cap on basic lands for this challenge as an additional restriction, then reversed the decision?

Heavy work in progress, still trying to find out what cards are making it show up as "Unknown" for legality format.

KrazyCaley says...
2:23 p.m. on January 25, 2010

Don't worry about that, Illiad. I check the decks for format legality independent of what the site says.

KrazyCaley says...
2:24 p.m. on January 25, 2010

The cap "rule" is not a magic rule, it's a site rule. I'm trying to see if there's a way to get around it.

squire1 says...
2:38 p.m. on January 25, 2010

A way i found around it was to use snow covered lands. It should not matter for most matchups. I doubt anyone will play an anti-snow-covered land deck.

Actually consider that a subchallenge from me. please someone prove me wrong and make a snow-covered hate deck

Marcus316 says...
1:15 p.m. on January 26, 2010

As a n00b to these types of challenges, I'll ask a n00b question: do I just post a link to the deck in the comments here to enter?

squire1 says...
1:51 p.m. on January 26, 2010

@Marcus316 - that is correct just place the link of the deck in the thread and it is considered entered. Alterations to that deck can be made up until the due date according to KrazyCaley. But obviously do not change the name of your deck as the link will no longer work

KrazyCaley says...
1:55 p.m. on January 26, 2010

@yeaGO! The deck builder won't let you post decks that have in excess of a certain number of a particular basic land. You get a notification like "You really need that many Island?" or some such.

@Marcus316 time-spiral-timeshifted/squire.jpgSquire hit it on the head. Post the deck in the comments here, and I check it when the deadline comes.

Hey KC both me and Illiad have used starter-1999/ancient-craving.jpgAncient Craving although I don't beleive it is Legacy legal is it ok to throw it in. It's not banned it's just part of a portal type off-shoot and you did ban portal/sylvan-tutor.jpgSylvan Tutor which is from Portal.

KrazyCaley says...
4:37 p.m. on January 27, 2010

starter-1999/ancient-craving.jpgAncient Craving is not banned. It is legacy-legal. Every card that is not on the banned list for legacy which has a black or white border and otherwise was published by Wizards as a normal magic card is legacy-legal, even promo stuff that never appeared in a set, like promo-set-for-gatherer/sewers-of-estark.jpgSewers of Estark.

Marcus316 says...
1:44 p.m. on January 29, 2010

My deck is very silly. It is by no means competitive. However, it IS a lot of fun. Maralock 250 is my entry. It's gone through multiple different iterations trying to be at least good enough. I just wish I could more easily playtest this thing and tweak it further. :D

Yes, I tried transmute cards for tutoring ... wasn't happy with them. So ... I took them out. Just keep drawing!
