Interim Challenge!

by Darkness1835

13 January 2010

Hey TappedOut'ers,

KrazyCaley's doing some pretty good challenges, but I'm thinking of one myself. Here's the rules.

  1. Extended format. (No vintage or legacy), (4pts)
  2. Your deck MUST use mostly red spells. To define mostly, in the pie chart labeled "Land Mana", you must have at least 50% red mana, (4pts)
  3. Your deck must strive to win by someway OTHER than burning quick damage. A good combo or alt-win like guildpact/niv-mizzet-the-firemind.jpgNiv-Mizzet, the Firemind would be acceptable. ,(10pts)
  4. You will get points for creativity. (Creative names you somehow manage to link, creative combos, and creative card choice.), (10pts)
  5. Does your deck even work? I will be pretty harsh when grading this part, and I suggest you play your deck at least a couple times to see it work., (12pts)

If you have any questions on what would be acceptable in terms of how damage is dealt, you can email me at werdna1000@gmail.com (Oh god, I probably just sold my soul to my computer for the next week.)

Note from KC- Deadline for this one will be a week from now, 1-20-10, at midnight US Pacific time. Darkness1835 will judge it up. I'll be back with a new challenge when I post Darkness' results.

could you define burning quick damage a little better, please?

Darkness1835 says...
7:44 p.m. on January 13, 2010

Certainly! Burning "quick" damage is cards like 2010-core-set/lightning-bolt.jpgLightning Bolt or champions-of-kamigawa/lava-spike.jpgLava Spike. the only point to the deck is to deal out damage to your opponent FAST, and win maybe 5th or 6th turn. I'm not saying if you have 2010-core-set/lightning-bolt.jpgLightning Bolt in your deck its burn, but you better have it in there for a reason other than just sending at your opponents face. If you DO choose to go the route of "burn", be creative. dont just fill the deck with tenth-edition/shock.jpgShocks, get a combo out.

Well, I think I can still score high for effectiveness and creativity. I was playing this with harrow, but then sadly discovered it was an uncommon.

Here is my second entry:

Standard Pauper Landfall

Elesdee says...

Candyland

It is based upon red cards so judge carefully.

squire1 says...
8:18 a.m. on January 14, 2010

most of these still seem like burn or quick aggro, even a lot of the combo. I think that there shoul be more clarification on the theme and how much can be a different color

Darkness1835 says...
9:46 a.m. on January 14, 2010

I suppose technically even the example I gave (guildpact/niv-mizzet-the-firemind.jpgNiv-Mizzet, the Firemind) is burn. but i just wanted to see a red deck win without burning. burning meaning 2010-core-set/lightning-bolt.jpgLightning Bolt after Lightning Bolt to win the game. most of the decks sumbited so far are fair interpretations of this.

squire1 says...
11:23 a.m. on January 14, 2010

squire1 says...
11:34 a.m. on January 14, 2010

btw- what are these being tested against, anything in the extended environment or just other submitted challenge decks. Just wondering for sideboards

KrazyCaley says...
2:44 p.m. on January 14, 2010

I generally test the decks against each other and, if necessary because there are weird quirks about those matchups, also against "vanilla" archetypes that would be valid in the format. Not sure what Darkness' protocol will be, though.

Darkness1835 says...
6:15 p.m. on January 14, 2010

the plan was the run all the decks against each other, then randomly assign two headed giant. that depends on how many decks are submitted and if theres an even number and all that.

TAMA says...
7:44 p.m. on January 14, 2010

Can I withdraw entries to save you time and effort and then submit some others in place (although a smaller number to save you effort).

Darkness1835 says...
8:04 p.m. on January 14, 2010

Submit as many as your want. I'm almost done with most entries because the only real restriction that need to be judged by playing is the last one, which i will do once i am done accepting challenges. because i've pretty much gotten all of them "half-done", dont withdraw any. besides, then more the enter the better chance you have of winning.

unless you just suck.

squire1 says...
7:53 a.m. on January 16, 2010

2 things.
Since there is a deadline and editing may be happening up until that deadline. It might not be a good idea I think that you should wait till everything is done.

And linking to that song wierd page is just lame. The comedy career will not work out. Funny and lame are different words

squire1 says...
7:58 a.m. on January 16, 2010

you might try waiting until the end and then random spotted single elimination one-on-one matches in a bracket system to the finals. Sounds like a fair way to do it. That way you can assign points for winning at differing levels. Solid criteria I think.

$ªmHεiπ says...
10:42 a.m. on January 16, 2010

I have a challenge idea - vintage. deck must cost around 35 bucks. for every dollar you go over , you start with one less life. ie a 40 dollar deck would penalize you 5 life at the stat of a duel.

Darkness1835 says...
12:40 p.m. on January 16, 2010

@squire,

  1. i appreciate your opinion.
  2. i DONT appreciate being made fun, especially over the internet. next time, try not to be rude. it'll go over better.
  3. since people DO tend to change their decks around, i have decided that im just starting over on the 20th. as for the criteria, each deck is judged on the first 4 individually, and then massive playing ensues for the other 12 points (each deck plays every deck 3 times, best 2/3, randon two headed giant, best 2/3etc) scores that tie go to head to head, or round robin tournaments to decide who wins.

darkmonk6593 says...
1:33 a.m. on January 21, 2010

Sprouting Lock? another one fo the road. And also... Kiki should lose by default, isn't part of this based on creativity? And i think its banned in EXT... But id double check... Havn't seen it at extended tournaments, but red and blue have answers for fast stuff so it would be there...

darkmonk6593 says...
6:15 p.m. on January 21, 2010

@ Samhein: Take a look at the second deck i posted Sprouting Lock?, and tell me about how typical that deck is. And while the megrim discard may have been good, i don't believe it ever was banned (instant fame?) like kikki. And for the creativity in the rack deck, look to the uses of transmute, and the panoptic mirror, unconventional in typical decks.
