Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp

Legendary Artifact Creature — Insect

Modular 1 (This creature enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. When it is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, you may put its +1/+1 counters on target artifact creature.)

If a modular triggered ability would put one or more +1/+1 counters on a creature you control, that many plus one +1/+1 counters are put on it instead.

: Destroy target artifact you control.

: This gains flying until end of turn.

wallisface Whether this deck ever places in any tournaments remains to be seen, but I'm not about to throw the concept out in favor of making just another scales or taxes deck. If I wanted to do that the copy/paste function would have saved me a lot of time.

I'll answer much of this when I get the description written on how to pilot it. To hit an easy one: Anointed Peacekeeper is a replacement effect, not an ETB trigger, so Hushbringer has no effect on it.

Regarding Hushbringer hitting only three decks in the meta, based off MTG Goldfish data this assertion simply isn't true. In addition to hitting Scam (Dauthi Voidwalker, Seasoned Pyromancer, Grief, Fury), Omnath (Endurance, Omnath, Locus of Creation, Fury, Solitude, Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines), and (both Jeskai and Azorius) Control (Solitude, Wall of Omens, Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines), it also hits Creativity (Archon of Cruelty), Hammertime (Kor Outfitter, Stoneforge Mystic), Temur Rhinos (Fury), Living End (Architects of Will, Grief, Subtlety), Mono-Green Tron (Wurmcoil Engine), Yawgmoth (Young Wolf, Blood Artist, Strangleroot Geist, Endurance, Geralf's Messenger), and Scales (Hangarback Walker, Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp, Arcbound Ravager).

So the decks that Hushbringer doesn't touch are Burn, Murktide, Underworld Breach, and Domain Zoo.

The top 15 decks represent exactly 80% of the meta (per MTG Goldfish), with the four above decks that Hushbringer doesn't touch representing 21.5% of the meta. So assuming Hushbringer has no impact on the missing 20% of the meta not represented by the top 15 decks (definitely untrue, Death and Taxes, Eldrazi Tron, Merfolk and Amulet Titan being four obvious examples that Hushbringer hoses just off the top of my head, but let's pretend) it still prevents something in 58.5% of meta competitive decks.

Granted it's not a great card against all of those decks, but it still disrupts something, while sitting on a 1/2 flying lifelink body.

Regarding those decks that Hushbringer's static ability doesn't impact at all, four quick points:

  1. She can be an excellent chump blocker or damage trader in a deck with 4x Giver of Runes when the opponent lacks trample, plus lifelink is naturally strong vs burn.
  2. Not all +1/+1 counters are created equal, you get a lot more mileage on a lifelink flyer than on most other creatures, especially if you're trading.
  3. Those four decks are generally hosed by other aspects of the deck (by design), i.e. Archon of Emeria hoses Murktide, as does much of the list, frankly. That's not to say it always beats Murktide, but it does hold its ground respectably (at least in my playtesting).
  4. Our sideboard is designed to help us most vs our weaker matchups, and since it's white it's a pretty solid toolkit. I do think the sideboard could probably be further improved.

In general, since we're trying to deny value and slow down the game, we're looking for mana dumps and value engines that help us grind ahead. The +1/+1 counter engines help us do that, and when placed on a lifelink or vigilance creature punch above their weight.

If you think it's a garbage deck concept then that's fair. I've playtested vs a handful of the top competitive archetypes with surprisingly good results, but it may be that despite my best efforts I'm just no good at piloting other decks. In any case I'll entertain feedback that helps it do what it's meant to do better, but I'm not looking to create just another deck that everyone's seen a million times except with a slight two-card tweak just so I can call it innovation. I hope that makes some sense.

When I get a description written up I hope to make things a bit clearer. Undoubtedly the deck isn't for everyone, and may not ever end up on a meta list. That's ok.

multimedia on Optimus Prime Rolls Out!

Hey, good version so far and nice Transmute Artifact. It's crazy only three cards here make up $1700+ of the $2k deck price.

Your deck doesn't have a Commander. In the deck editor where you see text list of the cards add CMDR to the end of Optimus?

Optimus Prime, Hero *CMDR*

When you save and return to your deck Optimus will be the Commander with it's own category and card image.

Definitely find room for Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp since it does a lot for a 1 drop. Zabaz + Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader  Flip is honestly all you really need since the little bug does it all. Modular and being a repeatable sac outlet for Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip is excellent. It can sac itself to then put all it's counters on Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader  Flip for a huge attack of lethal Commander damage to an opponent. It being a sac outlet for Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip is what makes it powerful.

Animation Module can be part of a combo for infinite counters on all creatures you control and infinite Servos with Ashnod's Altar + Cathars' Crusade. The only problem with this combo is Crusade is an enchantment, not an artifact. Without having tutors to get Crusade it could be difficult to assemble. If you add Crusade then enchantment tutors would help.

Some cards here to consider cutting for these:

Because of bolster and other counter sources then the small +1/+1 anthem effect is not really needed from Chief of the Foundry or Master of Etherium. You have three better creatures here who protect artifacts, Bronze Guardian is not needed. Arcbound Crusher could simply be cut for a better modular creature? Towashi Guide-Bot at 4 mana is too much for what you get. Yes, it could be repeatable draw, but you have to tap it to draw only once. It is good with Unwinding Clock, but without Clock it's subpar.

Before I make other card suggestions, what is your budget for making upgrades? You have some of the most expensive price cards in Magic here, but you also have some of the worst budget lands thus I don't know what to think. Some areas to consider expanding on are ramp and sac outlets? Ramp to make it easier to cast Optimus and sac outlets to abuse Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip convert. 9 sources of ramp is low when Optimus is 5 or 6 mana.

Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip has to die to convert, having some sources to sac him can be helpful and also give lots of value. Sac outlets let you repeatedly use both sides of Optimus and they help to get around having to cast 6 mana Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip. Instead, More Than Meets the Eye for Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader  Flip which can be even less than 5 mana with any effect that reduces artifact casting cost.

To get around summoning sickness you want to be able to sac Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip on an opponent's turn. If you sac Optimus Prime, Hero  Flip on your turn then when it returns to the battlefield it has summoning sickness, can't attack without haste. This isn't as bad if you have another creature to attack + bolster because Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader  Flip itself doesn't have to attack to convert, but still you want to be attacking with trampling Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader  Flip doing Commander damage.

If you're interested I offer more advice when I get a better idea what your budget is for upgrades. Would you like more advice?

Good luck with your deck.

Any time I want to do something a bit more casual and fun I tend to gravitate toward Boros. Boros has a lot of options for strategies that "do things early" that are "generically powerful" without usually being busted op as there are often lots of ways for opponents to interact with your lines of play.

I haven't bothered to work on it yet, but I had a plan for a Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp + The Ozolith deck that seems like it might be loads of fun. Boros affinity? Sign me up daddy, that seems like it could be enjoyable to play.

Thanks for the feedback zapyourtumor! Some reasonings:

-Steel Overseer is definitely slow. I have only just started playing with these recently, and they seem fantastic as a way to put counters on Esper Sentinel without The Ozolith. The protection from Blacksmith's Skill, they are a resilient, must answer threat usually, but their slot may go to more Ancient Stirrings or some Arcbound Worker in the future.

-Welding Jar, Snakeskin Veil, and Blacksmith's Skill all fall under the protection category for me. I started with jars (and I know some lists are runing 4-of recently, because they're great), then I moved to veil, and now I'm on skill. The reason being that I'm a paper player, and as such, I've adapted to the local meta. Unlike veil or jar, Blacksmith's Skill can protect Urza's Saga and Inkmoth Nexus which is huge in a meta full of exile effects and Spreading Seas

-I did try Ingenious Smith for a while, but felt that it was slow, and required more 1-drop artifacts to be effective. While it is certainly a great card, my deck just isn't great for it right now. Usually it felt bad that I couldn't target it with modular, or that it couldn't hit lands with the ability

-Arcbound Mouser is also a great card, but in a deck where 1 drops usually get sacrificed to Arcbound Ravager or Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp, I felt that the lifelink wasn't super relevant. I've also liked having Arcbound Worker over it when I want a 1 drop, as it doesn't require any painful white mana, so I can leave my coloured sources open to play things such as Hardened Scales.

A lot of the information I get for this deck comes from the hardened scales discord server. Feel free to join us there if you haven't already!

Some thoughts:

  • try and get your deck down to 60 cards. While 64 might not seem much over, it’s going to overall weaken your draws.

  • modern is a fast format, and decks without ramp are generally unlikely to play more that 3-4 cards costing 4cmc (and nothing higher). I would suggest ditching your 5-and-6 drops. Your current 4-drop isn’t particularly impactful so I’d also consider ditching that.

  • 25 lands is excessive, I would suggest 22-23 might be closer to the correct number for this kind of deck.

  • Your current decklist is too spead-out. Having only 1-2 copies of all your cards is going to make it super inconsistent. Aim to get playsets of the cards that are important (like, Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp), and ditch the cards that aren’t particularly helpful (like Ornithopter of Paradise).

TypicalTimmy on Commander's whose color identity are …

I am trying to make a list of Commander's who have a color identity that extends beyond their casting cost. These are the ones I know of, and I would like to know if there are any others out there.

This list EXCLUDES MDFCs from Kaldheim and Strixhaven, such as Esika, God of the Tree  Flip, Jorn, God of Winter  Flip, Blex, Vexing Pest  Flip and Plargg, Dean of Chaos  Flip. The reason I am asking to not include these types of Commanders is because their color identity and casting costs match.

I am specifically seeking Commander's who have a casting cost that lacks their full color identity - that is to say, they have colored mana symbols in activated or triggered ability costs that are not part of their cost to cast the spell.

The issue with that plan is that Aleaha cannot recur them - as they both have 3 power and there are much better targets. Both cards have an okay floor and are powerhouses in draft but the ceiling is very low but if that's your thing I won't knock it. I'd say the best fit for them or any sort of human strategy is Winota, Joiner of Forces

Also, oddly enough there isn't many boros commanders that care about counters but here are the few that do Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp - I guess some modular sheniaghans could be fun. Keleth, Sunmane Familiar x Any red partner or any voltron build cause you wanna donk people asap.
