king-saproling comes in clutch with a ton of good suggestions, again! Thank you so much! I agree with virtually all the things you've suggested swapping out. Druidic Satchel might not be that good, but it's a card I've never used and I fancy trying out. I was worried a few of my Thallid cards were a tad weak, especially some of the more simple saproling spawners like the adorably named Yavimaya Sapherd . I'll start incorporating your suggestions now, thank you! :)

Nice deck! I'd gladly play something like this if I had more of these cards in my inventory.

Speaking of slight tweaks, are you sure Ravenous Chupacabra would be better than Murder ? I know it's a creature and triggers Poison-Tip Archer, but Murder seems quicker with Instant possibilities.

Secondly, I have a doubt of Ochran Assassin 's usability. My experience is it dies too quickly before enabling our swarm to flood the enemy and costs 3 CMC to attempt to. What is your view on it?

Last but not least, I'd definately try to decrease number of cards in the deck to 60 for bigger chance of achieving what the deck is designed for. To achieve that, I'd advise to get rid of few 'fours' and remove 1x Llanowar Elves , 1x Yavimaya Sapherd , 1x Spore Swarm . The last card to remove for me would be either the Ochran Assassin or 1x Ravenous Chupacabra, just because it might be of less use sometimes.

Let us know how the playtest went once you have a chance!

Also, did you consider a sideboard for it? To me, biggest threat for the deck would be some burning removal. Duress seems a must. Maybe Shapers' Sanctuary so that if we lose some creatures, we can quickly restore the board? Finally, Kraul Harpooner against second deck threat - flying things.

Maybe History of Benalia instead of Yavimaya Sapherd?

Hey Nometahere,

Where've you played this deck list? I'd like to know how it performed, if you wouldn't mind.

As to your points: Llanowar Elves serve well in dropping a turn two beater like Yavimaya Sapherd or Deathbloom Thallid, or even a turn three Torgaar, Famine Incarnate if we get lucky. I'm not sure I would want to cut them, but I'll definitely keep it in mind as I continue with this deck.

Carnage Tyrant is pretty far out of my price range, as is Assassin's Trophy. Getting two of each would actually double the total cost of this deck, and honestly, I don't really want to drop the fungus theme. Like, yeah, big dino is big, but it just isn't what I want here, you know?

Finally, Gruesome Menagerie seems like a pretty cool card, I'm just uncertain that I have appropriate targets for it. The absolute best-case christmas land of casting it would be turn five, bring back Llanowar Elves, Sporecrown Thallid, and either Slimefoot, the Stowaway, Deathbloom Thallid, or Yavimaya Sapherd, and I think I would almost always prefer to drop a Tendershoot Dryad instead of bringing those back. Especially post-boardclear, since I would definitely be losing all of the saproling tokens I had on board, and building them back up would be imperative.

Thanks!

Hey, nice start and good budget brew for your first one.

Consider Saproling Migration, Emmara, Soul of the Accord, Yavimaya Sapherd, Song of Freyalise and Conclave Tribunal? My suggestions are budget and can improve the consistency of getting Angels with Visitation. These suggestions can also help to fill out the mana curve which is lacking in impactful early game plays.

Migration and Emmara are two drops who can create tokens. Migration can create two tokens for two mana which is fine value or it can create four tokens for six mana which can be busted with Visitation later on in the game. Emmara can make a token each time she's tapped either by attacking, tapping her to convoke or tapping her to make mana with Song.

Song is a good card with tokens each token can be tapped to make mana. This ramp can be used to play a faster Visitation, Tendershoot or Trostani, etc. all these cards especially Visitation can benefit from ramp. The faster you can get a Visitation into play the better the card is and the more Angel token value it will make. Song's chapter three ability can be a win condition with tokens.

Tribunal is removal that exiles any nonland permanent and it has convoke. With tokens it's not a four mana removal spell it's consistently a two, one or even free with four creatures removal spell which is powerful. Tribunal is very good when all your creatures can make a token while also leaving behind a body. Sapherd is an efficient three drop creature for a token strategy, makes a token and leaves behind a body just like Gallant Cavalry.

Consider this budget example:

  • 3-4x Emmara
  • 4x Sapherd
  • 4x Cavalry
  • 2x Tendshoot
  • 2x Trostani

Other Spells

  • 4x Visitation
  • 4x Migration
  • 2x Renewal
  • 3x Song
  • 4x Tribunal
  • 4x March

  • 24x Lands

All the creatures in this example can make a token which goes well with the Visitation/March convoke plan, the main strategy of the deck. This is also good with Tribunal and Song since the more creatures/tokens you can make the better the ramp is especially with Emmara.

Lyra Dawnbringer is a great card, but I think you're right to put her in the sideboard. She doesn't make a token and is good when you have Visitation online and are making Angels. If you want life gain however she's your best source of life since she has lifelink and can give all other Angels lifelink. She's the only source of life gain you really need. Shalai is another great card, but she too can go in the sideboard as tech to stop Settle the Wreckage/discard/burn in control matchups.

Cards such as Ajani Wise, Colossus and Banner are less good than other options. Ajani and Banner is too many five drops. The same mana cost as Visitation, Tendershoot and Trostani. These five drops are more important than Ajani and Banner. Banner is good as a draw engine, but only if you're casting a lot of tribal creatures (creatures of the same type) not the case here. It doesn't work well enough with tokens since you don't cast tokens (they enter the battlefield (ETB) when created) and giving tokens +1/+1 for five mana is not very good.

When you can move away from budget then consider adding 4x History of Benalia and 4x Temple Garden? History is a powerful token creation three drop. Garden is another Selesnya dual land which can ETB untapped and helps to turn on Sunpetal.

Good luck with your deck.

1 of each creature is going to be pretty inconsistent. It'd be good to play some turn 1 ramp like Llanowar Elves and you'll wanna see it a lot so I'd use 4 of them. Then you can focus on combo and such. So 4 Slimefoot, the Stowaway and I would think 4 Sporecrown Thallid. Then you just need token generators. You have Fungal Infection and Yavimaya Sapherd which are good. I really like 4 of Spore Swarm too. Then fill in with your finishers. Ghalta, Primal Hunger and Demon of Catastrophes are strong. Play some removal like Cast Down and hand hate like Duress. Maybe a couple cards that can help return your big finishers from the graveyard or a way to help ramp into them, Song of Freyalise is my choice in my saprolings. Does wonders with 4 creatures on the board already.

In the end, you only need 4 Tendershoot Dryad to make saprolings really work.

Good luck.

Helm of the Host is a great bomb for this deck! I have a very similar saproling deck with 2 Helms in it. When its on Tendershoot Dryad, your saproling army will quickly become MASSIVE! This usually guarantees you the City's Blessing, gives you more and more saps each turn, and makes each sap gigantic. Putting this on Slimefoot, the Stowaway gives the game a countdown timer. Each turn, your saps will be capable of doing more direct damage upon their death. Sporecrown Thallid and Yavimaya Sapherd are acceptable targets for the helm as well.

My deck has a Torgaar, Famine Incarnate. It's fun and pretty easy to cast, but I've debated removing it too many times. By the time I can cast it, the opponent is already close to if not below half their starting health and this creature is simply a big body.

Journey to Eternity would be a nice sideboard card against mill decks, control decks, or heavy removal decks. It would give you the ability to dig up buried cards.

I think Thelon of Havenwood would be good here. He has good synergy with Sporesower Thallid, because Sporecrown puts counters on fungi that can’t actually use them (If you don’t get Sporoloth Ancient), like Yavimaya Sapherd. And if you ever wanted to splash black, he would also be good, although you’ve already stated that you don’t want to do that.
