Whirlpool Drake

Creature — Drake

Flying

When Whirlpool Drake enters the battlefield, shuffle the cards from your hand into your library, then draw that many cards.

When Whirlpool Drake is put into a graveyard from play, shuffle the cards from your hand into your library, then draw that many cards.

Hi Mercy_Mirror, I'm happy to hear that you were able to take away something from my list!

Regarding the Wheel effects, I was especially proud of remembering cards like Whirlpool Rider, which I run 4 of in an old-school mono-blue mill deck. It's a shame that it and Whirlpool Drake (not featured) don't share Whirlpool Warrior's capacity to Wheel everybody, though.

The discard Pharaoh tricks and discarding dredgers with Unmask was new to me, so thanks for this guide! But I disagree on some points:

According to my calculation the likelihood of having at least one dredge card in the 7 card starting hand is

for 13 dredgers in deck: 1-(60-13)!(60-7)!/(60!(60-13-7)!)= 83,7%

for 14 dredgers in deck: 1-(60-14)!(60-7)!/(60!(60-14-7)!)= 86,1%

for 15 dredgers in deck: 1-(60-15)!(60-7)!/(60!(60-15-7)!)= 88,2%

So maybe you can get away with running only 13 dredgers ??

Also I think that Balustrade Spy (or Whirlpool Drake) is as good or better than Ashen Rider in almost all situations:

-fair blue matchups: winning anyway without Dread Return

-Stompy: if they have Trinisphere, no dread return anyway; if they dont have it and aggro us spy wins the game

-dark depths: spy = win

-show and tell: put spy into play; if we have Progenitus/Worldspine Wurm/... in deck we win. If Whirlpool Drake is used, those "shuffle back" cards are not needed, so no slot gets used up by it. If they put Progenitus into play, Ashen Rider doesn't kill it.

-Elephant Grass: Lotleth Giant doesn't care, spy wins

-Glacial Chasm: Ashen Rider is better unless the wincon is Thassa's Oracle

In all of these cases Balustrade Spy wins on the spot, not giving your opponent more turns to draw cards. Only drawback is you have to put a finisher like Lotleth Giant/Thassa's Oracle/Flame-Kin Zealot/... into your deck for the immediate kill, but without that you still get lots of Narcomoebas, zombies, etc and don't lose the game next turn as long as Progenitus is in deck or Golgari Thug is reanimated and sacced, so still enough time to attack with all the zombies.

The instants look good and the sorceries are thematic.

3 suggestions. You have access to black with kess, and the best wheel colors. Wheel of Fortune is a lot, but include a Notion Thief with Windfall &/or Echo of Eons . Windfalling twice with notion thief can draw your whole deck.

Whirlpool Rider and Whirlpool Drake don't really net you any cards, but more importantly they don't disrupt your opponents. There are better creatures in these colors that are probably more on theme.

Last thing is that you have Laboratory Maniac in this list, but I'm not seeing any way to win with it here. Play Demonic Consultation Name Labman, play the lab man, then immediately cast Demonic Consultation again with Kess from your graveyard naming forest. That's a 2 card, 5 cmc win

Yes, cool deck! I like the way it works, especially that you've stayed away from an ultra control themed deck. The main thing to change is your average mana costs. Depending on your deck an average cmc could be around 3.0.

Many flying creatures are the proper card for this deck, but I would prefer to turn down Bruna, the Fading Light , Gisela, the Broken Blade for your decks strategy. Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign on the first sight seems right, would be great to insert some more Sphinx creatures. Sphere of Safety is indeed a good card in enchantment decks, but in case of mana costs it may not be worth to consider the payment. On turn 5 you have really good spells in your deck, and the Sphere of Safety doesn't do anything more than Ghostly Prison or Propaganda . Whirlpool Drake is in my opinion not good for shuffeling your graveyard into your library.

My suggestions are Darksteel Plate , for giving your creature indestructible. As I see you are not going into the strategy to pump up your commander with many equipments, but this card could be useful. Also a nice card for giving any of your creatures vigilance I recommend Reconnaissance (okay, it doesn't say dirctly vigilance, but with rules understanding you can untap the creature after the damage is done and before end of combat - so the same effect as vigilance. Also it protects your attacking creatures). Commander staples for white-blue are of course Cyclonic Rift (budget alternative Devastation Tide ), Supreme Verdict or Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer .

In your Maybe-board are already some nice cards - Aura of Silence does work well. Also Kinjalli's Sunwing slows your opponents down. Please consider the following:

  1. Strionic Resonator for getting more trigger effects!
  2. Warden of Evos Isle for some kind of mana ramp
  3. Steel of the Godhead

In my opinion you have to make some desicions wheter you play:

  1. Control with instants (Counterspells, etc.)
  2. Control with enchantments (Stax strategy)
  3. Creature based (more creatures - less spells)
The more strategies you follow the more complicated and destructive is your game plan. I'm really looking forward for this deck - again: many ideas are already awesome!

So currently there is a lot of interest in pod-cEDH. I spent a few weekends brewing & quickly grew tired of trying to calculate which 1-drop creature I could use to polish off a 5+ card flash-hulk chain. I had a slew of ideas and many attempts to find the right line & then I quit.

I like complex lines & unique styles of play that aren't 'punch with tymna&dorks, Draw a win' (even though it's actually just stupidly strong). Vannifar is unlike Gitrog - where usually every single card is worthwhile and has a place in the loop. In Vannifar currently a fifth of the deck is just dead cards. That's 1/5 cards sucking to draw, with only Brainstorm & Whirlpool Drake (by the way - this is a SPICY include - nice one) to fix that.

Most hulk piles use roughly the following cards: flash>hulk>body double & viscera seer>karmic guide>Reveillark This is a very basic, fairly efficient hulk-pile. It uses six dead cards, of which are not massively interchangable, and will usually suck in hand except for in fringe cases.
Most cEDH decks require a 5 card MAX in order to win. Whereas (and this is no slight on your part) vannifar lists use far beyond that efficient number of slots in order to play like it's a real pod deck.

It's down to the Vannifar community (and that includes you now) to hunt for a way to make pod decent in cEDH, as I believe that there's a great combo out there in simic that can be achieved.

There's a couple more flicker effects that I don't see in your main or sideboard like Nephalia Smuggler / Displace / Illusionist's Stratagem / Deadeye Navigator and weird ones like Baral's Expertise and Supplant Form . And creatures that counter spells work well with blink like Frilled Mystic / Mystic Snake / Draining Whelk .

There's also Everflowing Chalice / Astral Cornucopia that work with Pir, and Thrummingbird / Skyship Plunderer that are basically magpies (with Toothy) and help the counter themes. Tel-Jilad Stylus / Crystal Shard / Lord of the Unreal helps with protecting Toothy. What do you think about Whirlpool Drake / Whirlpool Rider / Forgotten Creation / Teferi's Puzzle Box as an additional Alhammarret's Archive? Turbulent Dreams is a nice additional Cyclonic Rift. And why do you run no planeswalkers like Kiora, the Crashing Wave / Nissa, Vital Force / Garruk, Primal Hunter (they enter the battlefield and activate with an additional counter with Pir.

What do you think of Empyrial Plate / Thassa, God of the Sea / Words of Wilding / Sphinx's Tutelage / Psychic Corrosion / Key to the City as an extra wincon? I have my own deck (here)[http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/22-07-18-pirtoothy/?cat=type&sort=cost] and I'm considering if these are suboptimal.
