Volcanic Eruption

Sorcery

Destroy X target Mountains. Volcanic Eruption deals damage to each creature and each player equal to the number of Mountains put into a graveyard this way.

It’s over-priced and pretty specific... but have you ever considered one of my all-time favorite natural disaster cards Volcanic Eruption? Experience counters would make it pretty savage... and copying it once or twice makes it even more ridiculous. It hinges heavily on people having mountains out, but you know you’ll always have a few of your own! LOL

This might set some of you off, but I only sort my cards by color. WUBRG, land, colorless artifacts, and multicolor. This “provides me with the opportunity” to go through all my blue cards, for example, when I’m looking for that Volcanic Eruption . While going through those cards, random other cards trigger weird little tangential thoughts about new themes and concepts for future garbage decks ;p It makes retrieving a card a much bigger excursion, but it keeps me connected to all those delectable little orphan cards that teeter on the brink of oblivion in our minds. Not for everyone, but I love it.

Conversion , Volcanic Eruption , and Glaciers to mess with his mountains.

Flash Flood and Flashfreeze for red removal.

Surge of Righteousness to get rid of red creatures.

Chill to tax red cards.

Baleful Stare to draw a lot of cards.

Teferi's Moat name red for ultimate protection. Harsh Judgment for more red protection.

don't forgot some neutral cards like Path to Exile , Swords to Plowshares , and Grasp of Fate just in case you aren't playing against red guys. If you want to keep the theme of color hose, Mana Maze and Drought are fun.

Finally, if you want to drop 400 dollars against your friend. Invoke Prejudice .

I hope that helps.

I will say, land destruction is my least favorite mechanic. I understand why it exists, and in some cases it is necissary. that said, blink-riders in standard was one of the few times that I ended up taking over a year long break from magic.

oddly, land hate wans't always (or even primarily) red. black and blue had some solid hozing abilities right at the start.

Erosion and Psychic Venom were punishing as hell for early game, and while it may not destroy the land, Phantasmal Terrain does mess with mana bases pretty well. Evil Presence and Blight helped round out Sinkhole for black. red had Stone Rain, Boil, Flashfires, and Fissure. blue had Volcanic Eruption and Acid Rain, (to counter act green's Tsunami, or Desert Twister). White had color hate for days with Drought and Conversion to name a few

oddly enough, the color pie was really into opposing color hate and ally color help at the start.

I don't think it was really until urza's block that red came to the forefront. and what a forefront it was. Wake of Destruction. as in, "see that mono colored deck over there? END THEM."

This is an awesome list! I was contemplating something like this a while ago, but I had no idea where to start. I'm so glad you started this! I'll definitely add this to the list of lists.

As for your comment on Volcanic Eruption and other color-hate cards, don't feel bad about leaving them out. I would not consider them eligible for this list either. Color-hate between & is actually pretty normal, as well as color-hate (versus enemy colors) of some degree in all colors. like Black Knight that one card that turns all mountains into plains, or something like that.

Also: Scryb Sprites

And: do you think Goblin Gaveleer would count? He always seemed odd to me, like he should be & human instead.

might be easier if you filter that list a bit (otherwise its just an endless search on card databases with basic lands, colors and "destroy"...etc as keywords)

are you just looking to build a database or looking for a specific kind of hate in specific specific colors?

do cards like Invoke Prejudice/Mass Calcify(non-color), Wake of Destruction/Story Circle(choice), Filigree Fracture(hate bonus) count?

or just ones like Volcanic Eruption, Cryoclasm, Reign of Chaos, Display of Dominance, Nature's Ruin, Perish, Reign of Terror, Cleanse, Dark Betrayal or Exorcist

Volcanic Eruption seems expensive compared to the other options available. With 4 copies of Chill, and 2 copies of Sphere of Law already, I don't see adding a 3rd. Disciple of Law was an option that I was considering, but other than Cycling, I see no real advantage to it over the other options.
