Vicious Offering Discussion

5dollarMTG, those are good suggestions. I have played this deck a few times now and it's a lot of fun to play in its current form (as long as the other player doesn't have a lot of counter spells...) but adding those in would help for sure! Thinking about replacing the Black Cat cards with 2X Vicious Offering and 2X Disfigure as the cats really don't do much for the deck.

I'd assume that the deck is meant for the best of 3 ladder since you have a sideboard. I don't like my record against aggro lists either so I run 4 Fountain of Renewal and 4 Dawn of Hope right in the main deck instead of the usual Chemister's Insight and other forms of draw. You can also replace Vicious Offering with Moment of Craving since this one offers lifegain and you don't have a creature to sack to the first one anyway.

Hope this suggestion helps, cheers :)

Vicious Offering is an instant, though, while Severed Strands is a sorcery. You can also choose not to sacrifice a creature with Vicious Offering , and the lifegain from Severed Strands may not be relevant with Slimefoot, the Stowaway .

Overall, I think these factors give Vicious Offering a clear edge, although I would consider boarding it out against +1/+1 counters.

So a dream start would be something like: T1 Duress T2 Vicious Offering , Drill Bit T3 Burglar Rat , Vicious Offering So thats 5 cards from hand on T3, hopefully thats a start we can expect and from here keep opponents answers to a minimum so that Kaya can step in and finish things off.

Love the idea of a witches and curses deck, but I think I'd add a bit more early game removal. Vicious Offering could pass as a witch card. Maybe Disfigure ?

Raise Dead isn't a bad graveyard retrieval card, but there isn't much that's better in Standard right now; options would be Recover , Soul Salvage , and FinD. Cast Down hits non-legendary creatures, and Price of Fame hits legendary creatures for cheaper than non-legendary creatures, so they complement each other nicely. If you're willing to ramp your opponent and splash green, you can pick up Assassin's Trophy , although probably not on a budget. Moment of Craving is not a bad card; it's one of the few things that get rid of Adanto Vanguard cheaply (since a creature with zero or less toughness is removed from the battlefield even if it's indestructible). You might consider replacing some or all copies of it with Vicious Offering if you're willing to sacrifice creatures sometimes, or with Dead Weight for a persistent effect without the life gain. A strictly more powerful but also more expensive option is Vraska's Contempt . None of those cards synergize especially well with Sengir Vampire because Sengir Vampire is a 4/4, which means that most of the time it will either kill a creature by itself or die to it, rendering the later death of the creature meaningless since you no longer control Sengir Vampire. If you're looking for that type of synergy I recommend Kazarov, Sengir Pureblood , although he's very expensive mana-wise for a Standard deck (which is probably not horrible in casual play but might bite you in the butt at a tournament when he gets killed with Price of Fame or similar after sideboarding). As an additional recommendation that's kind of like Moment of Craving thematically, you might consider Arterial Flow (both are useful in your deck but serve different roles); there's also Moment of Triumph as another vampire-themed combat trick. If you like all these vampire-themed cards for flavor reasons, search through the Ixalan and Rivals of Ixalan sets; they were tribal sets with Merfolk, Pirates, Vampires, and Dinosaurs as the tribes, so probably about 20% of the cards are vampire-themed in those two sets.

MurderForBrunch on Mardu Aristocrats V2

Hi ISitAloneAtLunch!

First of all, I must say that this seems like a pretty cool deck! I am also super hyped for an Aristocrats deck I want to build with the new set. The build I'm going for is much more Aggro, with quite a lot of recursion for a normal Aggro deck. You can check it out here if you want! :D

I like a lot your idea though, you seem much more able to abuse the token generators. Compared to the version I'm considering, this deck can't be as explosive, but it seems it has a much better late game than my version.

However, there's a couple suggestions I want to make in case it might be better for this version. I think Priest of the Forgotten Gods will be an all-star in Aristocrats. Yes, two creatures is a lot to sacrifice, but it enables so much! You make them sac a creature, you add two black mana and you draw a card! You could easily sac the Reassembling Skeleton and a token, for example, and use the black mana to bring back the skeleton. If you have Teysa on the field, and sac creatures with Afterlife, you get as little as four tokens! Or ping four times with Judith! Those two last examples are a bit Christmaslandy, but I think the Priest is one of the best sac outlets in the new set. I was proxy testing with a friend, and sometimes it's just absurd!

Also, despite the presence of both Lava Coil and Vraska's Contempt , I encourage you to include more Seraph of the Scales . If they try to exile it, you could sacrifice it to Pitiless Pontiff , to the Priest if you end up including it, or even to some cheap removal such as Final Payment or Vicious Offering (in case you face indestructible creatures in your meta). I only have two in my list, but I try to keep it more low on CMC. And still I might include another one! haha

Finally, I would definitely include some removal Mainboard, either Mortify or Bedevil in your sideboard are great cards (although Mortify is sometimes easier to cast). Oh! And Hunted Witness or Legion's Landing  Flip might be nice includes, just because they fit on the curve and are pretty good cards on their own.

Well, that's basically it! I'm sorry for such a long comment I wrote ^^' In general, I would say it looks like a pretty cool list. Good luck and have fun brewing!
