Urza’s Tome Discussion

Velverthex on Need advice on card draw ...

Hello, I am also trying to make a deck with Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage Raff. So far I have been looking into some drawing options. I think instants that draw you cards are usually best suited to the playstile of the deck, kind of like Pull from Tomorrow , Sphinx's Revelation , Frantic Search and Catalog . You can cast them before your turn if your opponents did not make you cast anything or you can play them earlier in the game to improve your options.

I think that Urza’s Tome could be a better substitute than Treasure Trove since you can flash it in with Raff and it costs less to activate the effect. The only drawback is you have to tap it. Arcane Encyclopedia works pretty much the same way but costs more to play

If you're going wide with thopters I'd cut these cards: Swiftfoot Boots , Urza’s Tome , Endless Atlas , God-Pharaoh's Gift .

Since most of your artifacts will be tokens, I don't think Padeem, Consul of Innovation and One with the Machine will be that effective unless you just want hexproof from Padeem. Same with Metalwork Colossus (not much cost reduction) and Traxos, Scourge of Kroog won't trigger that much. I don't think Ancient Stone Idol and Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer really fit the theme.

I don't think you need as many mana rocks since Saheeli discounts everything. I'd shift more to be 2 cost mana rocks if anything so Saheeli gets out faster. You don't really need the ones that cost like 6 and make 3.

Magmaquake is a great card that doesn't wipe your thopters - if you need more board wipes I'd do more like that. Deprive is bad just use Counterspell instead.

Some recommendations: Ghirapur AEther Grid , Pia Nalaar , Broodstar , Darksteel Juggernaut , Steel Overseer , Lodestone Myr , Blinkmoth Urn and Gravitational Shift . Check out cards with Metalcraft too, there might be some good ones and you'll basically always have it active.

This is such a fun deck idea! I love seeing creative decks like this — I would never have thought of this myself.

While not a book or "librarian" himself, Skilled Animator prominently features books in the artwork, and he might complement your high amount of non-creature artifacts pretty well.

Similarly, Artificer's Assistant is portrayed as being in a library, and would complement the large amount of artifacts (including the Artifact Creatures) being cast.

As to books, Mangara's Tome is an interesting effect. If you find that there's specific cards you generally want to be casting in this deck, then this might be a way to set up that win-con. A similarly interesting effect is Tunnel Vision . I could see this fetching the missing piece between Learn from the Past and Animate Library, if you have one and need the other.

You'll be casting mostly non-creature spells, so you should be able to put quite a few Lore counters on Scroll of the Masters . Combined with Suspicious Bookcase, this might be another way to push some damage through.

You draw a lot of cards, so you may not find a card like Index to be that useful, but just in case, figured it was worth mentioning!

Some other card draw options for your consideration, all featuring books:

Hey! Thanks a bunch for the feedback!

I've pulled Karn's Temporal Sundering, Magistrate's Scepter and both Urza’s Tome and Arcane Encyclopedia to put some Blink of an Eye in place.

I WILL be adding Tezzeret, Artifice Master as soon as I can get my hands on one.

As for my sideboard, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. Unwind doesn't fit.

I'm looking to add Sorcerous Spyglass to the deck to give me some idea of what an opponent has coming and for a cheap artifact. Should a game go on a while, a Helm of the Host + Skilled Animator combination would allow me to investigate an opponents' hand every turn AND stop various abilities from being cast.

Hey ! I like the idea of the deck but I think some things are weird in it.

Deck can go out really well I think, but can also fall apart quickly. With each card, you need to ask yourself, will be a situation it will really be usefull ? Skilled Animator as exemple is 100% a yes, it will always be a bomb on turn 3 with an artifact on play. But what about Arcane Encyclopedia and Urza's Tome ? You have to invest a lot a mana into it for a non instant effect. Opt or Divination could be better early game to find answer and Pull from Tomorrow as a late game bomb to refill your hand.

Magistrate's Scepter is also weird imo. It is really slow and op could just destroy it once you reach 3 counter and it will be 15 mana into nothing. If you want to take extra turn, add another Karn's Temporal Sundering.

I would swap Tezzeret, Cruel Machinist for the other one, Tezzeret, Artifice Master if you have the budget for. Can protect itself, draw two card each turn and can go fetch some big threath if you manage to do his -9.

I think you're trying to do too much things with your sideboard. Your deck is nice the way it goes I think, so you should try to either add more consistency or protect it with your sideboard. Thran Temporal Gateway is weird without Meteor Golem. Traxos, Scourge of Kroog is a good beater to have in this kind of deck.

If you manage to counterspell something with Unwind, what do you plan to do with your 3 untapped land ? I don't see a good way to do so, it might be better to just add a good hard counterspell like Disallow instead.

Metamorphic Alteration does not have a lot of non-legendary target to copy in your deck, so I think 3 would be a bit heavy in the sideboard. But it could be a nice way to deal with some scary stuff like a The Scarab God .

Anyway, that's a lot of stuff, I probably missed things too. If you disagree with something or have another question, I will be happy to answer you !

MTGplayer00 Got back from Standard Showdown not too long ago and it didn't go super well. I won a game in every round, and was very, very close to going 2-1 instead of 0-3... But alas, it is what it is.

Changing up the deck a bit so that it is more artifacts based and gets more value out of the artifacts. I'm really tempted to swap out something for an Urza’s Tome just so that I can get a little more use and a card draw/filter engine.

Also, Blink of an Eye was totally the right call, though I'm still not so sure about Unwind, since it was still a mostly dead card, but if you want to include it instead of Negate, go right ahead. If you build something like this, let me know. Like I mentioned in my update, the best cards in the deck were the artifacts and Merfolk Trickster. I feel like Core Set 2019 will bring us quite a few new tools (there was a one drop that was spoiled that may just make me fully embrace artifact stompy), so I'm waiting until then to update the deck again.

Good luck in your games!

JusWaite on Squee splat!

@ZeroX thanks, did not realize that. Ended up not being able to find one any how, replaced it it Urza's Tome. Figured I could use it after Squee goes splat and get a free card.

Faceless_Being on Enchantress-esque cards for artifacts

For commander I would personally recommend Ruhan of the Fomori. A 7/7 for and could very much benefit from leading an Equipment deck if nothing else.

As for suggestions regarding looting type effects I dug up Compulsion, Burning Inquiry, Desperate Ravings, Merfolk Looter, Urza’s Tome, and Customs Depot to name a few off the top of my noodle. I must say that alongside these effects Library of Leng is an all-star.

Hope this helped, even if it's slighlty
