Tilonalli's Crown Discussion

Galati on Torgaar’s 3 Step Program

Another card that could work is Maximize Velocity, this would allow you to swing with Torgaar, Famine Incarnate for lethal assuming they have no creatures. Run Amok could be used as a red Titanic Growth or even Sure Strike. These however don't really guarantee a win. Tilonalli's Crown might be viable also since it gives trample.

Some cards I find very valuable in my Uril build are:

Cartouche of Strength, which doubles as removal and a solid +3/+3 trample buff to Uril. If there's an annoying creature that's less than 8 toughness, it's dying, lol.

Another card to not sleep on is Tilonalli's Crown, which gives Uril a whopping +5/+2 and trample for only 1R. Similarly, Madcap Skills gives Uril +5/+2 and menace which is pretty reasonable evasion (turning him into a 10 powered beast is pretty huge).

Shielded by Faith is one of my favorites. You can slap it down on something silly before you get to 5 mana in order to cast Uril (I've put it on Birds of Paradise on turn 2, then t3'd Uril and moved the aura to him). It's not as powerful as Shield of the Oversoul but it is still pretty powerful and flexible due to the fact that once Uril becomes hexproof and indestructible, the number of cards that can answer him drops dramatically (requiring things like Cyclonic Rift, Merciless Eviction, Hallowed Burial, etc., instead of just any old Wrath of God clone).

Chandra's Ignition is a card I've found fairly amusing and it may be very powerful in your meta. Dealing 12 to all opponents and their creatures is a fantastic way to open up the field to swing in and attack.

Impending Disaster- this card seems janky, and it probably is a little bit, but it's a great card to windmill slam the turn after casting Uril. This + an aura typically makes opponents scramble, and it either does one of two things: It forces them to spend removal on it, instead of the aura on Uril (or Uril himself by casting a Wrath or something), or it causes all lands to go to the graveyard. Either way, you wind up with a big creature on board and happiness in your heart.

Burgeoning or Exploration- I run both, but one of these would probably be huge as either one could enable t3 Uril which is typically where you want to be.

I recommend removing:

Spectra Ward. I originally ran this too, but it causes a problem: It has to be the last aura you put on Uril, or else you can't target him to put any more auras on him. It's more than a little problematic considering Uril already has reasonable protection with his inherent hexproof, and there's plenty more auras that give evasion for a lower cost.

Serra's Embrace is pretty much worse than Tilonalli's Crown.

Entangler- You want Uril to be attacking, not held back to be a blocker. Unless you give him vigilance, this card isn't worth it as it doesn't help his offensive capabilities as much as other cards (and all you really want to do is smack someone in the face with him until they exit the game lol).

Avacyn, Angel of Hope- She just costs way too much. By the time you can cast her, you should have a couple of dead opponents already.

Faith's Reward- you already run Replenish and Retether. This one is a little bit too much. If you're afraid of board wipes, Boros Charm is substantially more flexible, can be used through graveyard hate, etc., and is much cheaper to boot.

Mayael's Aria- if you have a 20 power creature, you should have won the game already anyway. I find this card incredibly redundant and its first two abilities aren't worth spending the 3 mana for.

Anyway, hope this helps. Uril's one of my favorites.

Here's my list, for reference: Uril: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yeti

Psychorave, I appreciate your comment! I’m passing on Collected Company; it just doesn’t hit enough of my dinosaurs to be reliable since it’s cmc 3 or less. Lead the stampede is great though!

Carnage Tyrant is awesome, I actually just put one in the main and would like another. Ghalta too!

Tilonalli's Crown sounds cool, and I love the flavor, but i’m unsure of its effectiveness in a format as fast as modern.

If you like this list, don’t forget to upvote!

Lastly, i’d love to corroborate with you on an optimal modern list. Just tag me somehow and i’ll make my way over.

Hello itachi45!! Thank you for your time on my post.

Let's see if I can offer some suggestions. I have yet to design a Modern dino deck but I've had a few thoughts on it. I love the start of what you're creating. I'm aware some things are pretty expensive. I do not know your budget.

My first thought is the card Tilonalli's Crown. This card triggers any Enrage you have. But the biggest trigger. Is Siegehorn Ceratops. Instantly making him a big threat.

Second, is Collected Company With a creature heavy deck you can utilize this greatly. Lead the Stampede is a Budget version

Rampaging Ferocidon is banned in standard. But, in modern. All yours. Protects you from lifegain decks, and hurts people that focus on generating tokens Carnage Tyrant protects you from control decks. Ghalta, Primal Hunger Easy powerhouse.

Cavern of Souls also protects you from control. As well as gives you whatever Mana you need.

I may design a deck very soon. That's like this. If you would like. I will gladly contact you and we can share thoughts.

Theres an enchantment that does this even faster for siege horn Tilonalli's Crown that's +5 +2 and trample.

I've been playing Uril for a few years myself and I have a few recommendations (which, my list is here to give you reference from where my advice stems, as my list tries for t3 Uril and to KO someone by turn 4/5: Uril: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yeti).

Argentum Armor seems like an odd inclusion when not running Runes of the Deus, which lets you easily one shot a player when combined with 1 of most other auras (Shield of the Oversoul + Runes of the Deus = 26 Commander damage). Why destroy a permanent a player controls when you can make Uril go from 5 damage to 18 with a single aura and potentially just knock the player out of the game? Sure, it's a little bit slower, but it actively serves to end an opponent rather than just gaining you some life (then again, in my list I can plop a t3 Uril into t4 Runes + any 1 cmc aura to kill 1 player before they untap for their own fourth turn, so I don't necessarily consider its speed to be a negative factor when Pollenbright Wings is in this deck).

Spectra Ward isn't a great choice for Uril. I used to play it, but it prevents you from putting any additional auras on Uril after you cast it. Spectra Ward is more of a Bruna card since she can bring auras out of hand and graveyard without targeting, and even with Replenish that isn't easy to get around. You could easily find yourself stuck if you have less than an ideal hand, is what I'm saying. Also, Spectra Ward only really prevents damage effects from harming Uril, like Blasphemous Act (non-targeting damage sweepers), and doesn't help against things like Living Death, Cyclonic Rift, or Merciless Eviction, so I found my list to run better without it since indestructible effects protect better than Spectra Ward does, such as Shielded by Faith.

Cartouche of Strength is easily one of my favorite Uril cards. Give Uril +3/+3 and kill anything smaller than an 8/8 on board is nice for 2G, not to mention it gives him needed evasion. I feel like that'd be more worthwhile than Mage Slayer, since Mage Slayer is evasion but it doesn't deal Commander damage (which means you're hitting their 40 life total, not their 21 life total. And Mage Slayer is worthless if your opponent's decks run life gain).

Madcap Skills is just better than Exoskeleton Armor. The Armor requires their be at least 3 creatures in graveyards (which you don't run a huge number of yourself so this would almost entirely be off of your opponent's graveyards), but an immediate +5/+2 and can't be blocked except by 2 or more creatures evasion seems a lot more valuable since it's immediate and doesn't require the game drag on, and also doesn't get smaller once opponents begin dying and their graveyards leave the game with them. Tilonalli's Crown is also very similar and slightly stronger than Madcap Skills, too!

As opposed to the above advice, Daybreak Coronet will probably be more beneficial than one of the other equipment cards, as it provides vigilance, lifelink, and +5/+5.

Plea for Guidance is a card I dropped because of how mana-hungry it was, but it can be used to set up Bear Umbra + Aggravated Assault by itself, which is pretty powerful in slower meta games.

Overall, nice deck. Hope this helps you.

UPDATE: I did not see your sorc/instants for some reason? Your ramp seems fine.

Your CMC seems a little high and you don't have much in the way of ramp. You have a few good ways of cheating out creatures which is great. But many of them take quite a bit of mana to do so. I would suggest possibly throwing in a few ramp cards in. I might also suggest ways of pinging yourself for damage. An example being more cards like Tilonalli's Crown to ping creatures like Silverclad Ferocidons or Ranging Raptors which would greatly help you ramping up.

While Tilonalli's Crown would normally be a very nice match, Champion of the Flame already comes with Trample built in. The plan here is to give him First Strike, so Kwende can give him Double Strike, and he can fly in with Cobbled Wings. Right now, the only other Aura I may add back in would be Frenzied Rage for Menace.
