Tidal Courier Discussion

Hey my friend ! I'm a tribal player too and I find your deck really nice !

Do you know how many cards you'll draw on average with Goblin Ringleader ? I have tried a long time ago Tidal Courier for my competitive Merfolk duel commander deck. I found that for a 4 CMC this card was pretty bad and I got approximately the same amount of merfolks in my deck than goblins you have in yours. Maybe it is because blue has other best way to draw cards... Whatever. It is probably your highest converted mana cost card and I'm not sure you'll get as much value as you want from it. A wheel would probably be better :)

What about the new Pashalik Mons or even Goblin War Party ? Are you planning to try it ?

Can you tell us a bit about which kind of decks your struggling against ?

I got kicked few months ago by a Krenko player playing quiet some rocks ( Fire Diamond , Mind Stone , even Mana Echoes ...). Have you tried a more heavy curve ?

Have you try Shared Animosity ?

I stop bothering you there :p ; if you like tribal decks in duel commander feel free to check my fishy stuff ! Have a nice day

So a lot of what you’re doing is solid, there is a pretty great synergy level here, and no real problematic cards though there are some cards that are less than optimal.

For example Ichor Wellspring spring and the Guild Globe . Being in blue means there are just better options for drawing. Card draw can come from Cold-Eyed Selkie , Tatyova, Benthic Druid , Seafloor Oracle or Fallowsage who has synergies with your commander, also Prime Speaker Zegana who is just super good with +1+1. There are also spells which are just super good in blue like Ponder

You also have some room to improve your synergies with +1+1 and proliferate. Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter for example while not a merfolk is just great for the deck.

And there are some amazing lords (creatures that give all of a creature type +1/+1) in the merfolk tribe Like Merrow Reejerey and Merfolk Sovereign which are the inexpensive ones that you aren't already using.

A card that goes super well with your commander is Merrow Commerce .

Tutoring (searching for a specific merfolk from your deck) can increase consistency substantially so Seahunter despite the price tag is incredible, cheaper versions include Tidal Courier and Merrow Harbinger

Ramp is important and there are a couple cards that are used in most green decks, like Cultivate and Kodama's Reach . There is also a handful of cards that speed you up as well like Stonybrook Banneret , and I might consider some artifact acceleration like Simic Signet or Commander's Sphere

Shaper of Nature is a solid mana dump (a card that lets you spend excess mana at will

I'd use Vanquisher's Banner over Glass of the Guildpact , because you’re only really running a handful of multi-colored creatures. But it is a bit more expensive

Beast Within is super strong removal cause it’s in green and blue which don’t have great answers for problem creatures

On the wish list is Hardened Scales cause its so good with +1 +1 and proliferate

As for lands there are a couple of lands that help you and are reasonably priced Simic Growth Chamber , Evolving Wilds , Terramorphic Expanse , Lumbering Falls , and Oran-Rief, the Vastwood .

Cut recommendations:

  • Cursecatcher: not very good in Commander
  • Jade Bearer: doesnt have enough value
  • Jade Guardian: seems pretty meh
  • Tidal Courier: doesnt seem that good for Blue card advantage
  • Rewind, Arcane Denial: Merfolk is more aggro than control. Its good to have some counter spells, but I'd keep them cheaper and less of them.

  • Aquatic Incursion: seems too slow and mana intensive for only 1 unblockable merfolk... looking at other unblockable abilities you have, they are cheap or apply to all merfolk

  • Hardened Scales: I dont feel like this deck focuses enough on +1/+1 counters to make this valuable
  • Cauldron of Souls: Wouldnt most of them be really tiny? It depends on how many ETB effects you have that are any good and bonus points if the ETB gives +1/+1 counter (I count like 4 merfolk that this works well with?) Sure you have some lords... but unless your deck is loaded with cards like Deeproot Elite, I dont see the value.

Voor creatures:Deepchannel Mentor, Merrow Harbinger, Riverwise Augur, Seafloor Oracle, Surgespanner, Tempest Caller, Tidal Courier, Fallowsage, Drowner of Secrets, Jungleborn Pioneer, Merfolk Sovereign (Lord), Merrow Reejerey (Lord), Stonybrook Banneret, Lord of Atlantis(Lord), Master of the Pearl Trident (Lord), Merfolk Mistbinder (Lord), Coralhelm Commander (lord)

Ideetjes?

Seasinger,Lingering Mirage,Phantasmal Terrain,Streambed Aquitects,Aquitect's Will,Tidal Warrior,Tidal Courier,Coastal Piracy,Shapers of Nature, deeproot elite <(new card from rivals doesn't show up) all seem like good cards for merfolk tribal. A bunch of those cards enable island walk which a lot of the lords provide, seasinger synergizes well with that. Anything else just seems like strong cards that would work well in a g/u merfolk tribal. If you like any suggestions I can take a look as to what I'd sub out if you're curious.

As another example to my previous post (and because I see no one has submitted my current fave combo) I present the folowing:

Cloudstone Curio + Merrow Reejerey + Any two merfolk with 1 CMC each (ie, Merrow Witsniper).

Infinite Mill

Cloudstone Curio, Merrow Reejerey and 1 Merrow Witsniper in play.

  1. Play second Merrow Witsniper. (Opponent mills 1)
  2. Untap an Island. (Reejerey)
  3. Return first Merrow Witsniper to your hand. (Curio)
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 until opponent has no cards in library. (Infinite)
  5. End turn. (Win)

NOTE: You do not necessarily need two Witsniper, just one and another 1 CMC merfolk to continue the cycle.

Combo Enhancers/Alternatives

Having multiple Merrow Reejerey or Stonybrook Banneret in play will allow you to perform a similar combo with more powerful cards that have an "enters the battlefield" effect by either untapping additional mana or reducing the casting cost of your merfolk (or both).

Examples; Silvergill Adept (infinite draw), Tidal Courier (infinite recruit)

=========

And then pretend I gave an explanation for infinite bounce with Surgespanner.

But the above doesn't quite show the format I had in mind for how it would be viewed on the combo page. Sorry for that. Posting on a tablet makes formatting my posts a bit difficult. Also sorry for double posting, couldn't find an edit button.

I'll update later, but considering Spreading Seas. Removing Rhystic Study and Tidal Courier for a modern deck is easy because other cards provide similar results. No cards works quite as well as Reef Shaman and Chain of Vapor in my opinion, a lot of really close ones but with just enough restrictions on their usage that it reduces the versatility too much for my liking. Not sure what to do there. I would likely add Lullmage Mentor, plus go for the infinite tokens with Summon the School and Stonybrook Schoolmaster.

No data for this card yet.
