Tectonic Break Discussion

Hi there,

This deck already looks great, but we thought it would be worth mentioning several cards that could increase its power even more:

Warm regards,

You're going to have to run a lot of symmetrical effects (hit all players) and then run cards to get around them yourself. In a 4 player pod, if you 1 for 1 trade cards from hand for opponents lands, you're going to be really far behind. You start with 7 cards, while your opponents collectively have 21 cards. 1 for 1 trades are not the way to go about building this deck.

First, some cards that hate on lands. Winter Orb Static Orb Hokori, Dust Drinker

Now, some ways to negate the drawback

  • Boros Garrison and other bouncelands -> lets you get more from untapping just 1 land, and the bounce resets a land to enter untapped again
  • Lands that tap for 2+ mana -> Ancient Tomb City of Traitors Gaea's Cradle most of these are expensive-ish. Also check out depletion lands Remote Farm its a full cycle and they cheap.
  • Permanent untap effects -> Seedborn Muse and similar
  • Lots of artifact or creature based mana. Signets and Talismans are great in five color budget.

Next, some cards that destroy lands or hate on lands. Armageddon Boil Choke Flashfires Acid Rain Ravages of War Destructive Force Contamination Blood Moon Magus of the Moon Tsabo's Web Omen of Fire Strip Mine Wasteland Impending Disaster Tectonic Break Ruination Wildfire

Then we run some cards that let us recur lands, or like when lands break Ramunap Excavator Crucible of Worlds Life from the Loam Terravore The Gitrog Monster Titania, Protector of Argoth Splendid Reclamation

Add some lands matter cards, some ramp, and some good beaters, and you have a deck.

You want to make sure someone isn't playing anything so you can flip your werewolves? Mindslaver .

Also use: Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger , Tectonic Break , Thoughts of Ruin ... I'm getting all of these from EDHREC's top 100 saltiest cards list.

SynergyBuild on Creating a Stax Ban List

First, what do you mean be stax?

There are tons of types. Often, it is in reference to a few, but there are tons.

Land destruction/land hate is a common type, but it is massive in scale is style:

Ravages of War , Armageddon , Ruination , Winter Orb , Back to Basics , Impending Disaster , Wildfire , Myojin of Infinite Rage , Decree of Annihilation , Cataclysm , Jokulhaups , Tectonic Break , Obliterate , etc.

This bleeds into more blurry lines, like Boil , which isn't necessarily land hate, but is color hate, or Blood Moon / Contamination , which are considered stax too.

Tax effects are plentiful too, Trinisphere , Nether Void , Sphere of Resistance , etc. are often considered staxy, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV , Thalia, Guardian of Thraben , Vryn Wingmare , Glowrider , Thorn of Amethyst etc. are taxing, but so are Pendrell Mists , Magus of the Tabernacle , The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale , Kataki, War's Wage , etc. count too.

Even color hate like High Seas can count in that department, etc.

Point is, I've barely scratched the surface of the basic stax cards, not to mention synergies like Brago, King Eternal with Rishadan Cutpurse , etc.

I don't think you can ban stax.

Game One: regular

Ravenous Slime out, cast Blasphemous Act , killing everything except the slime, then cast Tectonic Break for 7, leaving opponents with 2 and 1 land. (one opponent had already been taken out by a lethal attack from another one). Attack twice with the 58/58 slime for the win

Game Two: star

Died to Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire after three swings with Strider Harness (should have realized it was a three turn kill). Resolved boundless realms for 12 but died before I could use the land. vivicutus killing omnath twice really killed me, plus having no way to kill vivictus. Might need more creature removal. Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire with Helm of the Host really took over the game because me and his other opponent had no creature removal.

Game Three: star

Right opponent had Repercussion and I played Chain Reaction to kill one opponent )dealing 21(=7x3), the mono red player (R op) was down to one land because I played Tectonic Break for three, me and my left hand partner both won because we killed the mutual opponent (and my right hand op and his left hand op were dead)

Game Four: star

Ghalta, Primal Hunger player (my R ally) killed my left ally, then I took my right opponent out after casting Tectonic Break for his four lands. Right op concedes, then ghalta attacks my left opponent and I finish him off with Omnath plus tokens, with Greater Good backup for 9 more sac damage and then Magmatic Force to close it out forsure because he would take 3 his upkeep, the 3 more R ally, then 3 on mine. (we had to finish up quick because the shop was closing). Me and right ally won together.

op: opponent, r: right

star: multiplayer format - TLDR:5 player game, the two people sitting directly on your left and right are your allied (therefore not your opponents, for cards that say that. plus you cannot attack them). The two other people are your opponents and you win if they both die.

Since pirates are fairly weak as a tribe, you're going to need to limit what others can do and attack their resources in order to chip in for the win. Your commander helps with creatures, so I would attack the hand and mana to slow them down.

I recommend discard like Capital Punishment , Dark Intimations , Discovery / Dispersal , Herald of Anguish (great with treasures!), Syphon Mind , Liliana's Specter , Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip, Scythe Specter , Siren of the Silent Song , Skull Rend , Tasigur's Cruelty , and Torment of Hailfire .

While land destruction is often looked down upon as unfun, if you decide to keep with a lot of small creatures, you can come out at an advantage by keeping the lands on the board low. You'd have to build your deck to accommodate that, though. For that, you have Mana Vortex , Tectonic Break , Desolation , Epicenter , Ember Swallower , Rite of Ruin (again, great with treasures), Boom / Bust , Impending Disaster , and Wake of Destruction . You'll also find that creature stealing effects snowball, since you can remove blockers to get in with your pirates. Insurrection , Expropriate , and Blatant Thievery will all serve you well.

I would also lean more heavily into treasures. Mechanized Production acts as a second copy of Revel in Riches to that end, and Brass's Bounty will help get you there.

Some generic tribal cards will also help. Cards like Vanquisher's Banner , Shared Animosity , Door of Destinies , Konda's Banner , Kindred Dominance , Kindred Discovery , Coat of Arms , Metallic Mimic , Adaptive Automaton , Obelisk of Urd , Path of Ancestry , etc. will help shore up the weakness of the tribe.

As for old pirates, consider Rishadan Brigand , Rishadan Cutpurse , Rishadan Footpad , Talas Explorer , Talas Warrior , and Cloud Pirates .

Finally, I would head to EDHREC just to see the staples that are played in Grixis colors, as well as for your commander and whatever theme you choose to go with. You can also toggle to budget in the top right in order to see what will make it easier to build without sinking a bunch of money into the deck. However, keep in mind that cards like River's Rebuke don't scale up well to multiplayer, so you'll find the choices people make are very different. While cards like Cyclonic Rift , Sol Ring and Vandalblast will hurt the pocketbook a bit, they're good investments for whatever Commander decks you choose to build in the future.

If you don't like what you see, you can also head to Scryfall to search for cards. They'll let you limit the results to cards in your color identity, put price limits, and let your rank the results by how much commander play they see.

gb: My playgroup isn't too keen on MLD decks :/ Epicenter is pushing it, and probably the closest I could get otherwise would be something like Wildfire, Keldon Firebombers or Tectonic Break.

And you're right, I should add in the Splendid or Mending... a single World Shaper isn't cutting it haha

I think I'll do The Mending of Dominaria, because it low-key works with The Gitrog Monster and Turntimber Sower.
