Taigam’s Strike Discussion

Argy on Help with Strengthening Grixis Pirate ...

My apologies.

I confused this with being a Standard deck.

If you're going for evasion you might also want to include:

BS-T on Ojutai Tokenslinger

You've got Distortion Strike and probably better Slip Through Space for good evasion.

For flavour and more birds from Dovescape you could use Taigam’s Strike instead.

Clarification needed on whether Dovescape checks for total CMC of split cards but something like Commit/Memory is good support if so - and/or Dusk just because.

In the same vein, Retribution of the Meek, Fell the Mighty and Kirtar's Wrath are good wipes for token decks along with Austere Command that you already have.

Not a fan of Gift of Estates or anything that specifically adds lands to your hand without away to dump them into play like Terrain Generator or Ghirapur Orrery. Gift is doubly awkward because it only gets Plains, and you only have 11. Yeah, you get your nonbasic Plains as well, but if you draw a glut of them early, or get Gift really late, it isn't worth it. You're better off with something like Burnished Hart, Myriad Landscape, Journeyer's Kite, or Thaumatic Compass.

I think you might want some more dragons if you're serious about Ojutai, Soul of Winter. His effect is stellar, but if you can't reliably swing with more than 2 dragons, it's a bit rough.

Shroud is nice, but I don't think Taigam wants it. It's very difficult to protect him from things when you can't target him. The Crystal Shard is a stellar touch, but not great if you have Whispersilk Cloak on. You might be better served with Swiftfoot Boots to get haste with your hexproof. Also a great taste with Taigam’s Strike, Distortion Strike, and Slip Through Space

Valorous Stance is pretty cool, great if you're focusing on just keeping Taigam around. Some other cards that help your team live through boardwipes couldn't hurt much. Eerie Interlude is one of my favorites even if it works better with ETB abilities and doesn't help tokens out at all, poor Monastery Mentor

It's a shame that Kor Haven doesn't help protect Taigam on his way in to slugging someone in the face to rebound all your spells. Speaking of which, Instants/Sorceries that draw you cards might be worth looking at since what's better than drawing X cards? That's right, drawing 2X cards.

I'm not sure I like the amount of auras included. They work counter to Wydwen's biggest strength, her return to hand ability. Cards like Open Into Wonder, Artful Dodge, Slip Through Space, Taigam’s Strike, & Shadow Rift don't have the lasting impact, but can also fuel the addition wincon of Rise from the Tides or Runechanter's Pike.

Consume the Meek is another good, cheap sweeper, and an instant. Its listed at nearly .$50 here but I'm seeing a lot of $.20 copies on tcgplayer. Barter in Blood/Innocent Blood doesn't hurt the player either, b/c there's so few creatures and Wydwen can save herself.

erendil: Thanks for the insight!

That's interesting about the 3 drop mana rocks. I'm only really enamored of Relic and Lantern, actually. Those are both REALLY helpful with all of the colored mana requirements with the deck. As I said above, I'm generally reluctant to use the Signets because they don't make mana on their own, but maybe it'd be worth testing the Izzet and Azorius Signets in place of the Ingot and Commander's Sphere.

Ok, on to the meat of your reply: PROTECTION & UNBLOCKABILITY!

So, I've mostly goldfished this deck up to this point. In my playgroup, I expect decks like Atraxa Superfriends, Mimeoplasm Infect, and Teysa to draw more early hate because they're more visibly threatening as they build up board state. Once I start playing this deck on the regular, I don't think that will be the case.

Vanishing seems worth it. Rainbow Efreet has long been one of my favorite blue creatures. Putting that phasing effect on Shu Yun seems pretty excellent to me. Flickering Ward (and even Mother of Runes) seems better than Apostle's Blessing to me, but maybe that's a personal call. I sort of wanted Taigams Strike, but I wasn't sure what to cut for it.

Last but not least, Aggravated Assault isn't there because I don't personally care for infinite combos, not quite as satisfying. ;)

Looking good! I've built a Shu Yun deck similar to this in the past, and he's fun to play. One thing I can say for certain is that 3+ drop mana rocks (with the possible exception of coalition relic.... okay, okay MAYBE the lantern) are too slow. I highly recommend slimming down to all two drop rocks. Also protection should be a bigger factor. Once your enemies realize that you're running "One-punch-man" you'll be getting ALL the hate. no one wants to let him swing when it means someone's leaving the game. He'll wind up costing 9 mana before you realize it unless you invest in some protection. The absolute best protection in the game is Vanishing. worth the two mana to be able to say Shu yun doesn't exist till your next turn if need be. also Apostle's Blessing and the hoard of cards with similar cost/ effect. Kithkin Armor is good too. at least all the cantrips that give protection. also unblockable is a MUST. as much as you can fit in. Aqueous Form needs to be mainboarded for sure. You NEED unblockable reliably every game. Can't overstate that. It sucks when one punch man hits a bird token (he's a monk, it makes him sad ;P) or just gets blocked and killed. (yes I see you have some, but they are mostly instants so he's only unblockable for a turn or two). Taigams Strike is expensive the first turn but free the next so I think it's worth it. Keep rocking man! Love for the silent tempest always! Oh also, almost forgot, since you have a Sword of Feast and Famine why not round out the win condition with Aggravated Assault for infinite attack phases? (I would swap for World at War)

I would cut Lunar Force, Nullify, Guile, Invisible Stalker. Modern is a quick format. Taigams Strike is okay as a 1 of to close a game.

Nice G/U Infect deck!

I have some suggestions for you if you want to [and have the money to] improve upon your build.

1) Swap out Giant Growth for Might of Old Krosa. Yes, I know that card is pricey but it's a really good investment card that's increasing in value over time, which thus makes it worth buying for your deck and keeping in good condition if you ever decide to sell it down the line (consult "MTG Stocks" or "Quiet Speculation" if you'd like to further grasp what I mean by this).

2) Swap out Titanic Growth for either Invigorate or Phytoburst.

3) I would potentially consider swapping out the protection spell Apostle's Blessing for a green hexproof spell like Ranger's Guile or Vines of Vastwood that can simultaneously add damage to your Infect strategy. Although, don't get me wrong, I would actually recommend side-boarding Apostle's Blessing for when you're up against decks that don't have multiple creatures of different colours in play. Only in such a scenario can you effectively use the spell to simultaneously protect your infect creature and make it unblockable when you attack with it. Speaking of unblockable...

4) I think Distortion Strike is really solid here... certainly far better than its functional - albiet less effective & practically unplayable - reprint Taigams Strike. However, what I don't understand why you're running Gitaxian Probe in here. While it's undeniably a great card in certain deck archetypes (e.g. Grixis Delver, Mono-Blue Tempo, Esper Control, Nahiri Control), it doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose here that I can conceive other than to drain your life and/or show you how screwed you might be against certain opponents. So I'd like you to seriously consider swapping it out for either Aqueous Form or Rancor so that you can further fuel your win condition of infecting your opponent with Poison counters.

While I'm not as well versed with the best options you have available for infect creatures, I would recommend searching a little deeper for 1-Drop creatures that have Infect on "Gatherer Wizards" that are viable in your current build (if there are any available to you in Modern that is..).

Anyway, I figure I've given you enough deck building advice & homework for now, so I wish you the best of luck with your improvements and future Modern play with it as well.
