There are several ways for me to kill him off the turn I play him, such as Omnath, Locus of Rage & Titania, Protector of Argoth tokens, multani, Seismic Assault & Borborygmos Enraged, or, if worst comes to worst, I can use Blasphemous Act or Struggle. Also, Green Sun's Zenith makes it a lot easier to make sure you can get him into play when you need his card draw.

He is certainly one of the least on-theme cards, but when he works it is fantastic.

Hey, when playing Llanowar Elves you want more than nine sources of green from lands that can ETB untapped turn one. You also don't want the same number of basic Mountains as Forests. Consistently you want to have a Forest more than a Mountain in your opening hand. Consider 9x Forests and 5x Mountains?

Consider moving Vine Mare to the sideboard replacing it with Jadelight Ranger? The tandem of explore Branchwalker and Jadelight is great with green, they help to find red sources of mana. They give green selection and card advantage in the early game.

I'm part of the 4x main deck Blossoming Defense crowd. I think the card is a huge reason to play green. It's very good vs red especially protecting against Chainwhirler's ETB or combat or Earthshaker/Crasher/Glorybringer's abilities. It's even better now because of Thorn Lieutenant. You're playing Hungering Hydra Defense is great to protect it; easier to get counters from damage on it when it's pumped and protected. Defense can also be a blowout for one mana against four mana Vraska's Contempt. Consider 4x Defense and 4x Abrade? Moving Spray to the sideboard?

Speaking of sideboard I don't see one. A big part of getting better at deck building is utilizing the sideboard. If you're playing in a specific meta at FNM then the sideboard will be much different than if you're planning it for an overall Standard meta. In my opinion the most important cards to plan for with the sideboard for an overall Standard meta are: Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip, Scrapheap Scrounger, Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, The Scarab God, Seal Away and Lyra Dawnbringer. 4x Abrade main deck helps a lot against a lot of threats in Standard like Chainwhirler, Siphoner, Grace/Malice, God-Pharaoh's Gift, Heart of Kiran, etc. 4x Defense main deck helps against all the two for one removal that's in Standard Glorybringer, Chandra and Teferi.

This does best against midrange Creature decks.

It struggles against more agressive Creature decks.

My Jhoira's Crew provided it with a lot of problems.

That is due to the disproportionately large number of Creature spells, combined with Negate, and an annoying Dive Down.

This deck also struggled against the Creature heavy Rivals of Ixalan Merfolk by Corbin Hosler

It does well against Control, although the matches are veeeeery grindy. The longest I played went for 26 turns.

Watch out for that at FNM. You might want to let your partner know that you are both playing Control, so might need to pick up the pace a bit to get an actual result.

There was one match where you ran out of win cons, because the Grixis Control Opponent was able to get rid of all your Creatures.

I didn't Sideboard, but you can. It was against grixis-energy-by-eric-froehlich

Fliers presented a bit of a problem, as did recurring Creatures, such as gods. Some Magma Spray in the Sideboard would help stop things recurring, and I think squeezing another Struggle in would be a good idea.

When magical christmas land happens, and you get three or four Creatures on the field at once, it is glorious. That actually happened more than I was expecting.

This is not a card I like to suggest, as it gets shoved into just about every deck, but I STRONGLY feel that your deck is the right place for Treasure Map  Flip.

It can be sacced in a pinch, if you don't get any other Artifacts out, it smooths our your early draw, and it can give you draw in the mid to late game, if needed. At the very least it drops three more Treasures on the field.

I know that you said you needed help with removal spells, but in the games I played you were fine.

Oh yeah, and you want to swap four of your current basic lands for Sulfur Falls, when they become available.

Hey, I like the mixture of the two strategies. Is only one two drop creature enough though?

Consider cutting some Alpha, Deathgorge or Ripjaw for either Merfolk Branchwalker, Earthshaker Khenra or even Resilient Khenra?

For the sideboard consider 2x Chandra's Defeat replacing 1x Naturalize and 1x Intervention?

Struggle is also a nice card for Gruul. Instant removal that can kill a creature which Abrade most likely can't. Good in Midrange matchups. It's anti The Scarab God tech.

Kill the God with Struggle end of turn. Then Survive on your turn shuffling the God and all creatures that it could of embalmed from all graveyards into their owners libraries. Or do all this for five mana on your turn.
