Stream of Life Discussion

Tyrant-Thanatos on Should Green Have Lifegain this ...

Stream of Life originates from Alpha. Back then, "White is undisputedly the best color in this game at gaining life" simply wasn't true. In fact it was quite a while before white caught up to green's level of lifegain.

Fruition , Rejuvenate , Wellwisher , Nourish , and so on. It wasn't until Soul Warden that white got anything even resembling efficient lifegain imo. Maybe Spirit Link , but that's still a single outlier among plenty of efficient green lifegain cards.

Lifegain is one of those things that shifted on the color pie as the game matured. It started as a primarily green thing that white did on occasion. If anything, I'd argue that White has become too efficient at it, to the point that Green rarely even bothers with it anymore, effectively robbing Green of what was once a defining characteristic.

And it would seem to me that Sanguine Sacrament makes Stream of Life look terrible. I don't see how Stream could possibly be "too efficient" in the face of that.

Finally, I feel like pointing out that in general, the best lifegain cards tend to be ones that are both White and Green. Vitalizing Cascade , Heroes' Reunion , Dawnglow Infusion , Oracle of Nectars , Ajani, Mentor of Heroes , Pledge of Unity , etc.

White is undisputedly the best color in this game at gaining life, but green is allowed to have lifegain, as well, although green’s life gain can never be as mana-efficient or in as large quantities as white’s.

However, there are a number of green cards that gain life that I feel are too powerful, and thus blur the line between green and white, including Stream of Life , Feed the Clan , Phosphorescent Feast , and the new Weather the Storm . If all of those cards were white (or even green/white), they would be perfectly acceptable, but I feel that such powerful and efficient lifegain is not suitable for green, which focuses more on power and brute strength, whereas white is the color of healing and repair (typically, but there are certainly exceptions in both cases).

What does everyone else say about this? Do you believe that those cards are too powerful and efficient for green?

@griffstick: Irony; I never truly needed a tribe for this deck anyway; & if I did, I'd once again go through my "Minority Confirmity" (Liking something nobody else usually would.), & not do either Eldrazi, or Ixalan Merfolk. Thanks though.

Anyway, I hope I don't have to cut a Magus just for the original (Candelabra of Tawnos in particular is expensive as crap for me... X/ & to think I can handle most rocks...), that said, I wonder what cards to cut in advance. Genesis Hydra isn't the same as the origin it was based on as it only nets one card. 1card. Fascination is Group Hug; Yuck. 2down. Stream of Life is good for Infinite Life, but useless in competitive play. 3down. Kindred Summons as this isn't Tribal Based. 4down. Fungal Behemoth = Why did I even throw this in? 5down. Altered Ego is to costly, & I could find better Clones anyway. 6down. Several other things include Gilder Bairn + Paradise Mantle + Training Grounds, & Aluren + Dream Stalker + Tidespout Tyrant are really clunky as 3 card combos. One less, & it would've been fine for now. 12down.

I'll keep these as arxhives until I can find 2 card variants for both combos...

You might scrap Nourishing Shoal for Predator's Rapport. My opinion, Shoal says "exile A Card for a few life (Your highest CMC is 7, so 7 life for 0 mana) or pay any amount of mana for any amount of life -2." So you either blow a lot of mana or lose a card, in trade for most likely less than 10 life... from a 7$ Card! OR, Rapport says "if your creature is alive, you gain x+x life." Consistently 3 mana, great fun to respond to destroy spells with, and hydras have a tendency to keep getting bigger...And you have Stream of Life anyway to do the main ability of Shoal for less mana.Admittedly, I used it in a doubling counters deck and could occasionally earn 100+ life before a response was made.

Also, this looks like a creature/stompy deck with a burn twist... but you have a LOT of noncreatures. 4/5ths of your decklist isnt a creature, and that makes sense for the defense end but it might be a little heavy in combat tricks... Maybe i'm misreading the deck, I havent played it, But I would try to cut out about 5 noncreatures for creatures. Maybe even 7 noncreatures, for 4 creatures and 3 more lands?

Some other ideas: Pulse of Murasa instead of Stream of Life and for some added protection for your commander: Village Elder (combo's nicely with Pulse of Murasa)

greyninja on X Rosheen

Rosheen Meanderer was one of my first commander decks I built. It has since turned into Xenagos, God of Revels and currently Omnath, Locus of Mana; but the meanderer still holds a place in my heart

If you want to further pursue the avenue; I have a few more ideas.
Savageborn Hydra
Primordial Hydra
Lifeblood Hydra
Protean Hydra
Krakilin
Endless One
Verdeloth the Ancient
Steel Hellkite
Flameblast Dragon
Orcish Settlers
Banefire
Bonfire of the Damned
Hurricane
Stream of Life
Fireball
Clan Defiance

There's plenty more, but a lot of the one-shot burn spells are just that, one-shot, and don't keep hurting your opponent's turn after turn. Obviously that's a lot of suggestions so choose what's fun for you. This isn't a highly used archetype so a lot of the cards are pretty cheap :)

Cards like Decree of Annihilation scare me as they slow down the game, but one of your opponents could use something like Sensei's Divining Top to get ahead quicker. I know, I've done that to an opponent before after they played Apocalypse.

Genesis Wave drops all of your x-costing creatures onto the 'field as 0/0s and they die. So if you do add a ton of hydras etc I'd suggest removing it. Citanul Flute is epic in here since the converted cost of say, Savageborn Hydra, is only 2.

Anywho, have fun! +1 from me! Pease take a minute to check out some of my decks and +1 them! Cheers

Without really glancing at your list, Nissa's Revelation Nissa's Renewal Arborback Stomper Pelakka Wurm Stream of Life this one is great with your commanders ability since x will get copied as what you cast it for. Example you cast Stream of Life for 9 plus one green. You copy it with your general. You gain 18!
