Stormfront Pegasus

Creature — Pegasus

Flying

I am trending away from global enchantments in favor of repeated life gain or creature generation in this batch of edits. I made sweeping edits in several categories:

  • Lands

Swapped out 8 Plains for Cryptic Caves, Desert of the True, Encroaching Wastes, Idyllic Grange, Karn's Bastion, Labyrinth of Skophos, Radiant Fountain and Secluded Steppe.

  • Defensive Auras

Upgraded Pious Interdiction to Recumbent Bliss (which would potentially provide many instances of life gain instead of 1) and dropped Bonds of Faith in favor of Gossamer Chains.

  • Offensive Auras

Upgraded Chosen by Heliod to Soaring Hope, Hope Against Hope to Spirit Mantle, Indomitable Will to Gift of Immortality and Ordeal of Heliod to Sunbond.

  • Sorceries

Upgraded from Blessed Reversal to Aetherflux Reservoir, Plea for Guidance to Silent Sentinel and added Pegasus Stampede for more ETB creature triggers.

  • Vanilla Creatures

Swapped out generic flyers (Armored Pegasus, Concordia Pegasus, Loyal Pegasus, Mistral Charger, Stormfront Pegasus, Wingsteed Rider) for ones with more ability or utility (Pegasus Charger, Plated Pegasus, Eiganjo Free-Riders).

  • Relevance

Bigger is not necessarily better so I opted to swap out Serra Avatar for Danitha Capashen, Paragon.

  • Defense and Removal

I swapped out Elspeth Conquers Death and Ghostly Prison in favor of Sacred Mesa and Monastery Mentor and Giant Killer for Frontline Medic.

  • Boost

I also replaced 3 boost effects (Commander's Insignia, Dictate of Heliod, Honor of the Pure) with 3 alternate win conditions (Test of Endurance, Felidar Sovereign, Archon of Redemption).

  • Life Gain

Replaced 3 less efficient or reliable life gain sources (Soldier of the Pantheon, Righteous Cause, Honden of Cleansing Fire) with better ones (Soul's Attendant, Auriok Champion, Pious Evangel / Wayward Disciple, Linden, the Steadfast Queen, Answered Prayers).

ZonkmasterX on $160 Spirits Tempo

RedUndead40 I’m pretty new to this with a very small sample of matches and I greatly appreciate the advice of someone more experienced with the deck, but here is some of my reasoning for my current choices:

I have considered Curious Obsession before but my main problem seems to be a lack of things to do on turn one. It still might be worth the slot though. I have also had Remand in the main in the past but I cut them because when I don’t have a Rattlechains I can never seem to afford to keep mana up for them. Even when I do counter something important it is rarely enough of a Tempo swing to kill them except against big mana decks (which seem to be one of my worst matchups anyway). And it just seems to be a liability in so many matchups (affinity, burn, etc). I feel that with the two Phantasmal Images I probably have enough lord effects and so Favorable Winds isn’t necessary. And Think Twice Seems similar to Opt but slower, and I think I’d just rather run Opt since it gives me another turn 1 play. I totally agree that I would rather have Remorseful Cleric in the sideboard, but I think I need a critical mass of spirits to maximize the value of my lords, and an on tribe Stormfront Pegasus isn’t really that bad. And then sometimes it randomly hates on your opponent’s graveyard effects. I would love to hear a suggestion for a better 1 or 2-drop spirit to take its place in the main though, as I think it is my weakest link. I’ve even considered running Topplegeist to fix my turn 1 problem and my critical mass problem, but it’s just not a good card.

This deck needs more consistency. The best way to do that is to increase the number of cards to 3 or 4 of that card.

Also, the deck has too many cards at a high mana cost without the proper support. You either put in more cards to stall the game longer until you get to later turns or you remove several of the higher cost cards to make the deck run faster.

I built a deck based on some of the cards you chose and recommended several other cards.

23x Plains

3x Duskborne Skymarcher

4x Skymarcher Aspirant

4x Adanto Vanguard

2x Bishop's Soldier

3x Stormfront Pegasus

4x Legion Conquistador

2x Serra Angel

1x Victory's Herald

4x Vampire's Zeal

2x Slash of Talons

3x Impeccable Timing

3x Queen's Commission

2x Forsake the Worldly

First suggestion is to cut all the cards that are creatures that are not zombies or zombie related. If you have a theme you are going for, usually better not to bog it down with cards that don't help the deck idea.

Creature cards to to consider or put more copies in:

Lord of the Accursed: you should try to get 4 copies in the deck if possible. It makes a zombie theme deck much stronger just because you get the +1/+1 for all your other zombies in play.

Wayward Servant: again 4 copies because of how you should have all your cards being zombie related means this will sap your opponent and give some extra so you can afford to take hits.

Cryptbreaker: a good one drop that can turn cards in hand into tokens. Also useful because you can use it to draw.

Diregraf Colossus: is a creature that is useful cast earl since he makes it so you can get a token army going. also useful if drawn late because it becomes bigger for each zombie creature in your grave.

Dread Wanderer (site link not working, you can view it here): is useful if you can get them because they have the ability to come back from the grave and are a decent body for a 1 drop.

Support cards:

Graf Harvest: gives all your zombies menace as a 1 drop enchantment seems really useful and also allows you to exile creatures in your grave to create tokens. Suggest no more then 2 copies in the deck as drawing extra copies becomes useless.

Dark Salvation: a decent control spell that becomes much more useful since you are a zombie deck.

Liliana's Mastery: is another useful card that gives all your zombies +1/+1, but also generates you three 2/2 tokens.

Cards that must come out:

Useless: Faith of the Devoted: you only have one card with cycling in the deck for this to work with. Not worth running for that.

Not in standard format: Bloodhunter Bat, Standing Troops, Stormfront Pegasus, Victory's Herald

These are some quick card suggestions. If you need help finding more zombie related cards, I suggest searching other decks people have posted here or use the website http://gatherer.wizards.com. My list of suggestions do not contain all the cards you might really want, but should help get you going in the right direction. Best of luck with making the deck work. if you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try to help as well as I can.

It is a nice combo (Sphinx of Magosi and Righteous Authority). It is also extremely fragile as it costs a total of 11 mana and can be killed by something as simple as a 1 mana spell -- setting you back 10 mana. Most enchantments that buff your creatures are pretty meh for that same reason. For one card from your opponent, they can kill 2 cards and set you back a lot of mana investment. I have no doubt that combo could work in more of a tap out control/midrange style build. But I won't help you much in a tempo style.

As far as how to split creatures and non creatures, I would say it depends on your play style. You can certainly make a fairly spell heavy or creature heavy build work. But for what I am assuming is your budget, it would be better go to play around 20 creatures. Some of the tempo spells can run on the expensive side. I did a quick search through gatherer and came up with a list of creatures for you peruse. I did not look at prices for these cards, but I tried to exclude ones that I knew for sure would be expensive.

Aerial Responder, Spellstutter Sprite, Augury Adept, Sage of Epityr, Isamaru, Hound of Konda, Pride of the Clouds, Looter il-Kor, Mindshrieker, Lyev Skyknight, Court Hussar, Accorder Paladin, Master of Diversion, Fiendslayer Paladin, Daxos of Meletis, Soldier of the Pantheon, Azorius Herald, Arctic Aven, Quickling, Boros Elite, Stormfront Pegasus, Oreskos Swiftclaw, Surrakar Spellblade, Topan Freeblade, Jeskai Sage, Knight of the White Orchid, Mardu Woe-Reaper, Mentor of the Meek, Mirran Crusader, Mirror Entity, Reflector Mage, Silverblade Paladin, Squadron Hawk, Aven Riftwatcher, Banisher Priest, Fiend Hunter, Signal Pest, Azorius Arrester, Dungeon Geists.

Stormfront Pegasus just seems bad. What do you think about Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit as a replacement?
