Squee's Toy Discussion

DarksteelBadger on Fun: where to start?

Horobi, Death's Wail is fun and cheap. It does some neat things with Cauldron of Souls, Touch of Darkness, Squee's Toy, etc.

Staff of Nin was too high of a mana cost for what it was worth to me at the time, but I'll think about it. What would you cut for it?

I have a Squee's Toy, and I'm considering adding it in place of Desert. Despite being a EDHrec mainstay of the deck, I just hate how restrictive desert is.

Instead of using Glaring Spotlight, which will be regularly targeted by the opponents that care about it, I decided to just play more boardwipes. I have very few problems dealing with creatures, no matter how many keywords you strap onto them.

I'm not sure why I haven't been playing tooth... instant speed AND repeatable, two of my favorite things. Will change this.

I previously played Dauthi Embrace, but BB for the target was a little too much for me since horobi will almost never live to see an untap phase. Mana is limited for that turn.

Staff of Nin provides great card advantage while at the same time providing a targeting ability. Might be a little expensive to cast, but it is often a 2-for-1 that keeps giving.

Squee's Toy is cheap and hilarious. Kill off your opponent's stuff with a squeeze doll.

Glaring Spotlight is another tool so that you can target your opponent's stuff. Also can be sacrificed when you need to get in that alpha strike or just protect your board.

Tooth of Chiss-Goria can be played at instant speed and sometimes for free for a truly nasty surprise.

Dauthi Embrace is another repeatable tool that combos with Horobi.

Great decklist! Always love seeing janky or less popular commanders given opportunity.

I'm a fan of Mogis's Marauder out of those three. He is cheapest and his effect is immediate. I run my deck as reanimator which makes him more menacing. Shambling Swarm is a close second. Nefashu costs 6 and lacks haste. An easy target with Horobi is online.

Better draw options: Bloodgift Demon, Underworld Connections, Grim Haruspex, Harvester of Souls. Dark Prophecy would be suicide in this deck lol.

You should totally run Squee's Toy instead of Power Matrix for the hilarity.

Instead of Mutilate or Hellfire why not Decree of Pain? Could be a massive card draw and no pain.

Have you considered Squee's Toy? I've seen this card in a Horobi deck before and it looked quite good, but it's obviously very reliant on having Horobi.

Sounds like you're just using your commander, Ihsan, just for the color. A fun commander that I rarely see played whom is also mono black is Horobi, Death's Wail. He completely changes how the game is played and you can use rarely used cards like Baton of Morale or Squee's Toy to straight up Murder creatures. Horobi also neuters auras and equipment as they target the creature they attach to. Horobi's effect is symmetrical not one sided and he can easily utilize the powerful cards you listed above.

I had a good time trying to make Epochrasite work. I played literally every legal land except Terramorphic Expanse/ Evolving Wilds, 4 affinity cards, pretty much every creature, equipment, or cantrip with cmc 0-2, Whispersilk Cloak, 3-4 other 3 drops, and then finished off with anything else <2cmc which was even remotely close to playable like Squee's Toy. I replaced these last with Bronze Sable and Keeper of the Lens et al upon their release. Even if the rest of the dank was janky as heck, a 4/4 for 2 that recurs for free is some good. With wastes now I suppose I don't have to be slavish to the low curve anymore, but might keep squee's toy in just for nostalgia.

I also had fun with Tallowisp and Auratouched Mage.

Aven Mindcensor could be good in search heavy metas.

Crypt Rats has been printed as uncommon as well as common.

@GobboE: I'm already running a signed copy of Avatar of Woe; and while it would be vicious paired with Thornbite Staff, because I am running literally Shamans at this point, for sake of consistency I'm leaving it out.. Your other suggestions are good however.. Besides Squee's Toy, what else would you trade out? Keep in mind as well that, depending on your standard, I have about 5-10 sources of recursion as-is.
