Don't know if what I have to say will help but I'll say anyway.

There's a very specific deck I want to play competitively with, Monoblack Infect. I know it's not very competitive, probably tier 3 at best. However, it's a deck I really enjoy playing. It's an archetype that really defines me as a Magic player.

I used to know a bit more about Modern. Whenever Seth uploaded a Modern video I'd watch no matter the deck. Recently though, I've slowed down with MTG content, mainly due to WOTC's actions that really had a negative impact on my enjoyment. Which means I also haven't been updating my deck, nor have I finished my primer. I also do not have the money right now to finish building the deck.

The reason I'm saying all of this is if you like, love and truly feel joy playing your decks, then keep playing them. We play this game to have fun, and sometimes it feels like we want our decks to be something that wins rather than just be ourselves and enjoy some games. Will I ever be such a good competitive player with Monoblack Infect that when they reprint Spike, Tournament Grinder it'll have my face on it? Of course not. However, I like it and have very good memories with it. So, I'll keep trying to perfect it as much as I can.

I completely understand if time and money are truly something complicated for you. Sometimes a break is needed anyway and it does feel bad to come back and not know anything. Just take a bit of time and a few deep breaths to figure out if Modern/your decks are still worthy of your time or if you should maybe try a different format.

Also, don't worry about ranting. With the way some things about MTG have been going, I'm surprised there aren't more people ranting everyday.

In my play group, we of course have our Timmy, Power Gamer's, our Spike, Tournament Grinder's and Johnny, Combo Player's.

However, we also have Jimmy's. (like of the Commandzone podcast however not related). Basically, people who like to play combo, or spike, but fails at really being either except when it matters, aka when packs or store credit is on the line. They miracously obtain the perfect card to win them the game. not to mention, they politic horribly.

Either way, here goes;

Whenever ~ enters the battlefield or leaves, search your library for a card, and you may cast it without paying its mana cost.

Whenever you cast a spell, each other player cannot cast spells or activate abilities.

  1. Generally signets are better than talismans as they can be used the turn they come in. And while you have to pay life for coloured mana, the decks that want the speed don't mind.

  2. From what can be figured, the meter uses decks listed as competitive and then compares cards being run across all lists. It's still highly subjective (especially since competitive is highly subjective).

  3. Please don't use this thread to jump to other threads.

  4. Spike is gender neutral (see Spike, Tournament Grinder artwork). And I'm pretty sure Vorthos can be whatever.

Do not just keep adding more questions to your threads. Seriously, just stop doing it.

ElTacoDude i mean you can cut Spike, Tournament Grinder , he/she looks quite out of context to me. Also Basilisk Collar i think still should make the cut. dog play is a thing and the collar is like the most fetish-clothing-like equipment i have seen. with the back straps and everything

For the sideboard, you should put a bunch of cards from Urza's block to fetch up off of Spike, Tournament Grinder , like Memory Jar , Time Spiral , Lotus Petal , Windfall , Gaea's Cradle , Serra's Sanctum , etc. Busted and on-flavor!!

Phyrexian mana is also the mana used on Spike, Tournament Grinder.

I am glad I'm not the only one with a hatred for New Phyrexia. That being said...

Ironically, Spike, Tournament Grinder seems to have a fairly healthy grasp on Phyrexian mana balance. The 4-Pmana cost in her activated ability is powerful and on-color, but this isn't Griselbrand where you can activate it more than once a game.

Seems to me like P-mana in activated abilities, when paired with tapping as a cost, (or "until EoT" text, or maybe self-sacrifice) could be a way healthier system than P-mana in the casting cost. It also helps you tie the Phyrexians more firmly to the color pie. Imagine, for example, if Vault Skirge were with lifelink and ": Vault Skirge gains flying until end of turn". Now, that's a color pie bend, probably, but with a bit of tweaking it work better mechanically.
