Shield Mare

Creature — Horse

Shield Mare can't be blocked by red creatures.

When Shield Mare enters the battlefield or becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, you gain 3 life.

Wesley as a farm boy: Diligent Farmhand. Not Modern legal, but...

Castle Ardenvale or any of the other Eldraine castles.

Unruly Mob is the mob that had to be dispersed before storming the castle.

Of course, they did have to Storm the Citadel.

Consign to the Pit (of despair). Or you could use Death Pits of Rath.

There is Quicksand in the Cinder Marsh (fire swamp). Cinder Marsh is not modern legal, so you could use Cinder Barrens or Smoldering Marsh.

The whole thing is told by a storyteller, so you could include Lagonna-Band Storyteller, which synergizes with Happily Ever After. Also, Into the Story or Tome Scour?

Perhaps True Love's Kiss?

They did fetch horses at the end: Crested Sunmare, Diamond Mare, Wandermare or Shield Mare.

I like the subtle changes I'm seeing in the maindeck. I'd personally go -1 Mirror Image +1 Knight of Autumn , primarily to make sure you don't flood yourself with clones with nothing to use them on. Three clones should be enough to generate overwhelming value in this deck. I also might go -1 Meteor Golem +1 Pelakka Wurm ; the seven life, game-dominating body, and card-on-death are probably going to be better against most everything except Teferi. I also really want to find room for Biogenic Ooze in this deck, since Militia Bugler can pull it, much like Trostani Discordant . I don't know if it's better than Mesmerizing Benthid , though, so I'm not sure how it would fit.

Your sideboard looks pretty good. Vannifar decks are likely to out-grind the popular BGu Value decks, so you probably don't need much in your sideboard for those matches. If you can fit in a single The Immortal Sun , that might be worthwhile. I was going to suggest Shield Mare if it hadn't made it in; it's perfect for what this deck wants to be doing against aggro (especially MonoRed). Kraul Harpooner is also an excellent choice to keep you in the game against UR Drakes and MonoBlue. Incubation / Incongruity is nice emergency removal against giant flying creatures and helps dig for other sideboard answers otherwise, so it's reasonable, though I'd take the opportunity to go -1 Incubation / Incongruity +1 The Immortal Sun just for the occasional free wins.

Here are my two highest-priority suggested changes:
-3 Make a Stand ; +3 Negate
-3 Reclamation Sage ; +1 Lyra Dawnbringer , +2 Tithe Taker

Negate beats every spell that Make a Stand beats and more: Seal Away , Ixalan's Binding , Vraska's Contempt , Teferi, and most importantly Settle the Wreckage and Find / Finality . You lose the ability to swing creature combat in your favor, but in general you're favored during board stalls anyways. Negate will help you beat Wilderness Reclamation decks, burn decks, and Gates decks as well.

With seven copies between Knight of Autumn and Mirror Image , you've got plenty of maindeck ability to deal with Wilderness Reclamation , Experimental Frenzy , and Guild Summit ; additional artifact/enchantment removal is unnecessary (especially if Negate is in the board too). Rather, it might be better to have access to the swingiest white creature in the format - Lyra Dawnbringer - against aggro decks and Tithe Taker to harass and pressure decks that want to operate on your turn. Honestly, I'd rather see Tithe Taker in the main, but it's a fine sideboard card too. Other options in that open 2x slot are Seal Away as hard removal and Warrant / Warden as a flexible answer/threat.

Vivien Reid is also usually present in green lists somewhere in the 75. I'm not sure she's necessary here, but it's a card to always remember. Another card you have access to is Entrancing Melody , which is great for stealing Hydroid Krasis and is effectively a removal spell that also gives you pod fodder. River's Rebuke and Settle the Wreckage are also available in your colors and can be potential blowouts. Just options to keep in mind.

Finally, looking back over the list, you may actually need more mana sources than 23 lands + 4 Incubation Druid . 23 lands means that you're only 58% likely to make your fourth land drop on your fourth turn. If you're missing Incubation Druid and Prime Speaker Vannifar (or if they die), you can struggle to make it to your heavy hitters. Most Vannifar lists I've seen have roughly the same curve as your deck and are running 23-24 lands + 8-13 mana dorks. Not that this is necessarily correct, but the lists appeared to be performing well with that combination.

[User: SP3CTR3_chelts] Thanks so much for your comment! I don't use Shield Mare at the moment, but I am going to start trying it out, I just want to see if it will work with my curve.

I disagree on going into selesnya for two reasons:

1) I do not have the money for the mana base or the staple cards like Trostani (this is also supposed to be a budget deck)

2) It takes it from lifegain/combo to selesnya tokens (this is of course just my opinion)

Finally, I only run two copies of Sorcerer's Wand because my first intent is to gain life, then combo. Having two more would restrict my life gain slots especially for a card that can only be used in the combo, unlike Famished Paladin, Squire's Devotion, and On Serra's Wings

Thanks again for the comment, I hope I was able answer your questions!

hey, I was surprised not to see Shield Mare on the list?

but a greater recommendation is not to stay mono white:

Splashing green for an Emaria or two and a couple of Trostani would give you a good win con outside your combo to better beat decks that know how to beet your combo as a couple of removal pieces does destroy it. This would also allow knight of autumn for main or sideboard because it is such a versatile card! It would also allow the activation of Shalia's ability (not a core reason to splash green but a little bit of sugar on top).

Also why are you only playing a 2 of your sorcerer's wand. if it is a combo piece you want it all the time and do not care if you have one in hand and one on board! a deck causally running 3 knights of autumn or any other artifact removal piece would dismantle the combo?

On a different note if you are looking for more combo decks look up Polyraptor/Raptor Hatchling + Forerunner of the Empire +something that gives indestructible. really fun combo and if you do not have all the combo pieces it can still work really well eg. forerunner tutors polyraptor then play the dino creating 8 polyraptors (and killing the forerunner) 1 card combo :D

2x Tajic, 3x Aurelia, 4x Healer's Hawk, 4x Swiftblade Vindicator, 4x Truefire Captain, 4x Legion Warboss, 2x Tocatli Honor Guard, Conclave Tribunal, Shock, Lightning Strike, if you want to play fnm, make a sideboard with for example Shield Mare, a sideboard means 15 cards which you swap with cards in your deck before the second game, you can add cards to your sideboard which are good against some decks, but the worst against other. You could also play Mentor of the Meek

If you're looking for cuts I'd suggest Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle and Revitalize. Mavren is gonna do nothing when you don't have profitable attacks and even at his best a 1/1s a turn ain't that big of a deal a lot of the time. As for Revitalize I don't think the lifegain triggers matter enough that you'd want this (4cmc draw 2 with Dawn of Hope and 2cmc +1/+1 and card with Ajani's Pridemate). After that maybe Ajani's Welcome and Bishop's Soldier but from there the rest of the deck starts looking essential.

20 lands seems a little low tbh. Speaking of lands, a couple Zhalfirin Void is a freeroll with your color requirements.

Sideboardwise:

  1. I don't think Sphinx’s Decree works how you think it does. It stops them playing spells on THEIR turn and isn't going to work like a Silence effect to let you combo.

  2. Against burn Shield Mare is backbreaking and I also quite like Healing Grace as it can counter Risk Factor quite effectively and can also protect your must answer creatures from removal while also gaining life.

  3. I have a crazy theory that Tocatli Honor Guard is better than Sentinel Totem against the graveyard deck. Would you rather shut down their entire game plan (branchwalker, jadelight, chups, findbroker, izoni, wildgrowth, glowspore, supplier and even bugler and autumn in white builds) or fizzle Find / Finality one time? Obviously it dies to more stuff and Ajani's Welcome might have to be boarded out but personally I think it's worth it. The other consideration is it won't work against anything Arclight Phoenix related but that's a lot less common I think. Ok, rant over ;).

Anyway good luck. Hopefully with the rotation this combo gets more viable in constructed.

Evolving Wilds is the better of the two, but shocks and buddy lands should have 3-color covered.

Sideboard:

I'd run another Sorcerous Spyglass against walkers, from controlling ones like Teferi and Ral to the midrangy Vraskas.

Silent Gravestone is normally better than Ashes of the Abhorrent, so at leas switch one, but I like ashes for the lifegain.

Burn is a big threat in the meta, so Shield Mare feels like a sweet one of at least for a single Citywide Bust.

gabehare, I will probably swap the Shield Mare out for some Ashes of the Abhorrent if graveyard becomes bigger here. My sideboard is mostly against my LGS's meta: UW or UB control, Superfriends, and Aggro. I do think it will get big but I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. :p
