Shell Shield

Instant

Kicker (You may pay an additional as you cast this spell.)

Target creature you control gets +0/+3 until end of turn. If this spell was kicked, that creature also gains hexproof until end of turn. (It can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.)

Here are some I use, seperated by category:

Double Strike: Temur Battle Rage , Assault Strobe , Psychotic Fury , Buccaneer's Bravado , Raking Claws

Haste: Expedite , Crimson Wisps , Accelerate , Fever Charm

Evasion/Unblockable: Distortion Strike , Slip Through Space , Artful Dodge , Crypsis

Protection: Dive Down , Mizzium Skin , Glint , Shell Shield , Lazotep Plating

Power Pump: Rush of Blood , Balduvian Rage , Dynacharge , Unleash Fury , Sure Strike , Brute Strength , Titan's Strength , Rouse the Mob , Infuriate

Other than that, I run some value cards, like Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip, Storm-Kiln Artist , and Aetherflux Reservoir to just go on, and on, and on, and on, so on and so forth. Plenty of Draw Spells to keep the gas going, and some other Spell-slinging accoutrements.

I love it! That moment when you actually recognize the obscure jank and hit em with a "Nice!" heart hedron

Thassa's Intervention is generally a poor counterspell, but it is flexible. When casting it with Jadzi, it won't actually do anything, but you can at least cast it to get all the triggers going again as opposed to a regular counterspell. Maybe instead of counterspells, we go for protection spells? They won't help stop aggro, but they would be castable when comboing off. Snakeskin Veil and Shell Shield come to mind.

I've typically seen Orvar decks in U/R. This build is interesting, but there are some flaws both on the macro and micro level.

In the bigger picture, you don't really have a way to win the game. Ideally in an Orvar deck, you have a few creatures that work well when copied (in U/R this would be your Goldspan Dragon s and Sprite Dragon s), but there's not really anything like that here. At least, nothing that ends the game. I think the best possibility for that would be Elder Gargaroth , because if that gets copied it's basically game over.

On the smaller level, let's look at individual card choices. Selfless Savior can easily be replaced with protection spells like Shell Shield or Sejiri Shelter  Flip, which also fit the theme of targeting spells. Sea Gate Stormcaller doesn't actually work particularly well with the deck. Orvar won't trigger from the copy it makes, and you're copying pretty low-value spells in general. You have Professor of Symbology here, but no sideboard to learn from. Even if you do get some lessons, she's still not the greatest value and has little/no synergy with the deck. Charming Prince is generally a decent value card, but again, there's not really much synergy here. You don't want to be copying things with Orvar just for minor ETB value.

I think some better cards to copy with Orvar are big creatures like the aforementioned Elder Gargaroth or something that also benefits from being targeted/buffed. Maybe the new magecraft mechanic can help. Clever Lumimancer , Leonin Lightscribe , or especially Quandrix Pledgemage are all good creatures for that reason. All of these are also good independent of Orvar, though he does make them much better.

Ok, I see your point so I did add Shell Shield & Infuriate which means taking out Cleansing Wildfire . I also got rid of Go for Blood and replaced it with Crash Through just because it still helps my creatures, while Opt doesn't (only Sprite Dragon "synergizes" with it). If I add cards like Opt that are mainly there for extra instants/sorceries then it turns more into an "Izzit Control" deck rather than an Orvar, The All-Forming deck. Thanks for

I think having better removal will be more beneficial than a burn spell that can target face. It's pretty easy to get to a Goldspan or Sprite Dragon, which will finish people off pretty quickly. It's especially easy if you have cantrips like Crash Through or Opt , which, while not triggering Goldspan/Orvar, do let you dig for what you need and do trigger Sprite Dragon.

Shell Shield is a great protection spell. Seriously one of the best along with the protection from any color spells. Infuriate shortens your clock a lot of the time and can be used as a combat trick. Any one-mana spell creates mana for you if you have a Goldspan out, while two-mana spells are net 0. Cleansing Wildfire 's interaction with Orvar is something I missed, but it's still not enough reason to keep it in the deck, imo. If you have Orvar, you should be looking to kill your opponent within 2 turns. It's already late in the game, and Orvar looks scary so a lot of opponents will look to remove him ASAP. Cleansing Wildfire is net -1 mana (for that turn) +/-0 cards, but unlike the cantrips from before, it's not good without Orvar.

Yeah, I see the need for protection for sure, but that's why Shell Shield , Sejiri Shelter  Flip, and Feat of Resistance are maindeck.

Thanks for the Sprite Dragon comment, I didn't even think about that and I knew Goblin Arsonist wasn't the best option out there. As for Shatterskull Smashing  Flip I know it is better but Volcanic Geyser is an alternate win-condition late game when I have basically nothing left but have quite a few lands. As for cards like Opt & Crash Through they don't target any creatures so they don't synergize as well with Orvar, The All-Forming or Goldspan Dragon . And Shell Shield and Infuriate don't really do it for me because they have one ability that is terrible early turns where I don't really have any creatures on board and the mana at the same time to protect them. As for Cleansing Wildfire , it creates extra mana for me (as long as I have Orvar, the All-Form out and lets me draw a card too. Now Go for Blood I see the concern but it is one of the few removal cards I have and if I don't need it I can always cycle it. It also targets my creature which is great again with orval, the all-form. The only reason I run counters mainboard is to better protect orval, the all-form who can't create copies of himself if targeted by my other spells. Hopefully, that is a better explanation.

Sprite Dragon is much much better than Goblin Arsonist . The targeting spells could be a lot better as well. Shatterskull Smashing  Flip is almost strictly better than Volcanic Geyser , Infuriate , Opt , Crash Through , Shell Shield , and Spell Strike are good cards to be using as triggers for your abilities.

Flicker of Fate . You don't really want to be bouncing tokens or things with counters on them, so this is a bad protection spell. Sejiri Shelter  Flip, Feat of Resistance , or the aforementioned Shell Shield are much better. Cleansing Wildfire and Go for Blood are too expensive and don't give any extra synergy. Go For Blood doesn't even replace itself. In general, focus on cheaper spells and less countermagic. You don't want to end up in a control-y game, you want to survive the first few turns, then explode with Goldspan/Sprite Dragon + Orvar.

Nice! I feel like you could cut white and go for more targetted spells though. Infuriate , Crash Through , Storm Strike , and Shell Shield would all work for that purpose. Well, not Crash Through, but it's a red cantrip. Cantrips just work well with Sprite Dragon.

Also, if you're all-in on Orvar, make him a four-of! He works well with most of your creatures.
