Rhox Pikemaster Discussion

KongMing on Tajic, Legion's Edgelord [Boardwipe Aggro, Primer]

I've considered adding damage doublers like Dictate of the Twin Gods before, but opted not to. If this was a less combat-oriented deck, and relied more on mass damage spells to kill opponents, I would definitely consider doublers. But they are a double-edged sword with this build - including them means my creatures die to opposing blockers much more easily.

Reflexes is not a useful enough card on its own to justify making space for it in the deck. Perhaps if the deck had enchantment tribal of some kind, or if this were a more Voltron-style Tajic, but this board goes a lot wider. Because of that, there's already lots of ways to give Tajic first strike, like Field Marshal. I would rather include something like Rhox Pikemaster . Even though it's a bit more mana, it gives me a body on the board and gives my whole field first strike, but is not as big or easy a target as say Archetype of Courage .

Looks pretty tasty, and it's a great start!

I would take out Quest for the Holy Relic, Open the Armory, and Strength of Arm due to not really having that much equipment. I would add 3 more Plains (I would also try to balance your mana better, try less Mountains and more Plains). If that mana fixing becomes an issue, add in Evolving Wilds, Myriad Landscape, Warped Landscape, Terminal Moraine, Arid Mesa, Naya Panorama, or Terramorphic Expanse. I would recommend adding at least 3-5 fetch lands to help mana fixing.

If you take out Armory of Iroas, Murder Investigation, and Coat of Arms, you could free up the last two spots for the 38 lands.

I did notice that a lot of your soldiers have a synergy with equipment cards, yet you only run 2 equipment cards. I was a bit confused by this. I would recommend taking them all out and replacing them. I would also recommend trying to run 2 more soldiers (you are at that tribal sweet spot with all the soldier creatures, but Boros is known for being aggressive with instant/sorcery AND creatures). 30 creatures is great aggro. Here are some creatures I would recommend: Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Blaze Commando, Sunhome Guildmage, Preeminent Captain, Field Marshal, Daru Warchief, Ballyrush Banneret, Veteran Swordsmith, Rhox Pikemaster, or Catapult Squad. The cards I'd recommend to take out are Auriok Steelshaper, Auriok Survivors, Auriok Windwalker, Conclave Phalanx, Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas, Relic Seeker, Fated Conflagration, Arrows of Justice.

You already have a lot of key cards. I do see that your mana is very unbalanced. I would add more Plains. If you just take out one Mountain at a time and switch it for a Plains until your Pie Chart for your mana is "perfectly" aligned. It won't always be there, but the closer the better. With this being a tribal deck, it would help to have cards like Cavern of Souls, but that's a make-or-break card for you wallet. I actually don't even have one (it's one of the last 9 cards I WANT for my Gishath deck). Soldiers won't really get a lot of heat at any of my play groups, so getting countered shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Here is what I would take out and add:

- Quest for the Holy Relic
- Open the Armory
- Strength of Arm
- Armory of Iroas
- Coat of Arms
- Murder Investigation
- Auriok Steelshaper
- Auriok Survivors
- Auriok Windwalker
- Conclave Phalanx
- Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas
- Relic Seeker
- Fated Conflagration
- Arrows of Justice

+ Evolving Wilds
+ Terramorphic Expanse
+ Naya Panorama
+ 3x Plains
+ Sunhome Guildmage
+ Brimaz, King of Oreskos
+ Daru Warchief
+ Rhox Pikemaster
+ Ballyrush Banneret
+ Field Marshal
+ Veteran Swordsmith
+ Preeminent Captain

Rebalance Mountains and Plains to match the Pie Chart

Sorry for the ranty post. I get a bit into it.

Hey LegoAztec, am glad you liked it. If you have some soldiers around there are many good ones i havent included. For you can get Dryad Militant, Elite Vanguard, Thraben Inspector, Cenn's Tactician or something that benefits from soldiers like War Falcon. For cmc 3 Veteran Swordsmith and Veteran Armorsmith are solid choices. Archetype of Courage might come in handy or you might prefer Rhox Pikemaster. Benalish Commander is also a solid choice and most Lords can find a place in the deck. Pacifism and some other cheap removal might sound good if you are looking for budget. If you like more the idea of tokens there are many spells out there which bring forth 1, 2, 3, or X soldiers to battle, also if you spash some for Assemble the Legion, it is a lot of fun.

I had Rhox Pikemaster to give my soldiers First Strike, but your suggestion helps my other soldiers. Thank you, I'll use it instead.

Friendly reminder that you don't need to pick one over the other.

The best anthems in the format either aren't creature specific: Crescendo of War, Cathars' Crusade, Archangel of Strife, Archangel of Thune, Eldrazi Monument, Jazal Goldmane, and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, or don't mention one type over another: Coat of Arms, so there's no reason all your tokens need to be of the same type. (Before anyone says it, it does not matter that some of those buff your opponents' creatures. The fact that you are going to have so many more creatures than them will negate any advantage they might stand to receive.)

If you're planning on going wide, Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer is without a doubt the best choice as commander, although Adriana, Captain of the Guard can be solid if you don't want to build into artfacts and usually play with 4 or more people.

As far as Soldiers or Warriors as a tribe, building tribal decks is much less an issue of how many good creatures there are of that tribe, and more about how many cards give you bonuses for sticking to that tribe and including a lot of creatures of that type. In this respect it's much more useful to search though all the cards that mention that type in their text box, rather than looking though all the creatures that are that type.

Soldiers: Gather Search (106 cards, 96 in Boros colors)

Warriors: Gather Search (90 cards, 39 in Boros colors)

Just looking at those numbers, it's easy to see that Soldiers are more supported than Warriors, and especially so in red and white. To break it down further, lets check how many of those cards have effects that are relevant is commander (i.e. generate card advantage, scale well in multiplayer, are cost efficient, and/or allow you to cast spells more efficiently.) Specifically, I'm looking for effects that reward you for playing Soldiers or Warriors, rather than cards that just make them like Assemble the Legion, which can go in any deck.

Soldiers:

Here we have, 2 cost reducers, 4 anthem effects, 1 cheater, 2 removal spells, and a sword. Kind of mediocre actually, the anthem effects are outclassed by what I listed above, and only Catapult Master, Preeminent Captain, and Unified Strike really require you to build heavily into their tribe.

Warriors:

(Non-Boros)

Here we have, 1 sac outlet / life drainer, 2 evasion effects (probably better options for this, Cover of Darkness for example), 1 cost reducer, 1 (meh) haste granter, and 3 anthem effects. Clearly, Warriors are the less supported tribe here.

To sum up: Soldiers have more support than Warriors, especially in Boros; there's no reason to stick to one over the other; don't go nuts trying to force a theme if there's no reward for it.

Archetype of Courage over Rhox Pikemaster everytime. I built my friend a soldier token deck that uses a fog mechanic with Knight-Captain of Eos and it is very good but I feel a synergistic aggro deck would do better more consistently.

TheRedGoat: Lack of anything approaching reasonable synergy. The best I could do would be a mono-white deck with all the relevant Anthems and lorded over by Darien, King of Kjeldor and Captain of the Watch, Daru Warchief, Rhox Pikemaster, Veteran Armorsmith, and Veteran Swordsmith.
