Rhonas's Last Stand Discussion

I remember this deck. I always thought Spark Elemental would make a good push for this deck. Rancor might be another good way to milk those dies triggers while still getting value out of it. If this deck is fast at emptying the hand you might find either Lupine Prototype or Rhonas's Last Stand helpful.

Good afternoon, everyone.

As stated in the title, I'm looking ahead to what modifications my mono-green stompy deck will have to make. Obviously there should be something good in the new set when it rotates in, but I can make room for whatever that might be when the time comes.

I was primarily considering swapping out the cards that I lose (2x Rhonas the Indomitable, 2x Heart of Kiran and 4x Rhonas's Last Stand) with 2x Wayward Swordtooth, 3x Jadelight Ranger and 3x Merfolk Branchwalker, with the reasoning that while it might not be be quite as fast out of the gate, it should help me filter my deck to make it more efficient.

I would be interested in hearing the thoughts of others on that in particular, as well as any other substitutions that I should seriously consider. Thanks in advance for responding.

Jam more Thragtusk. More Beast Within. Disruption, tokens, lifegain. Interacting with your opponent doesn't sound as good as an infinitely scaling threat, but is mostly a stronger option.

Rhonas's Last Stand is the newest interesting thing for the archetype, giving some much needed early power.

Mercy Killing doesn't sound great, but is almost playable. Wolfbriar Elemental is similar.

Then we get to the janky stuff. Call of the Herd or Mouth // Feed, perhaps, Pulse of the Tangle or Cobra Trap. Things to stop you dying to early creature drops. Giantbaiting into Second Harvest is a fun option. It of the Horrid Swarm or Miming Slime exist. Mitotic Slime is obnoxious if you can proc it. Ooze Garden can be a lot of fun. Slime Molding seems interesting alongside song/ Spore Swarm/Sprout Swarm

There are also weird rebuild options like Prototype Portal/Soul Foundry with artifact creatures and golem tokens, elf tribal, Khalni Garden/land token generation builds. Lots of cards, nothing that has shaken the world recently. Good luck with the build.

Am wondering what's the rational with Rhonas's Last Stand? Wondering if Main Deck Artifact/Enchantment hate might be better? Thrashy-B?

You can also put Rhonas's Last Stand to enter on turn two if you dont have a Steel Leaf Champion on opening hand ir increase the chances to put Ghalta, Primal Hunger on turn three:

T1: Llanowar Elves T2: Steel Leaf Champion T3: Ghalta, Primal Hunger + Rhonas's Last Stand

I love the creature base! But I don't like the sorceries too much. 3x Harvest Season seems like too much, won't be that helpful since you can only use it efficiently in the late game. I think Oketra's Last Mercy should be in the sideboard since it's good against red decks but not so much against other colors, you also have a lot of lifelink already. Rhonas's Last Stand doesn't fit the theme and slows your deck down too much imo. I'm not a big fan of Prepare / Fight but maybe it works here.

Some good replacements for these could be: Seal Away, great defensive card for only 2 mana. Blossoming Defense both protects a creature and makes it deal more damage. There's probably good alternatives if you don't want to run Kaladesh or Aether Revolt cards but I'm not very familiar with standard sry. Vanquisher's Banner gives you drawpower you may need in the lategame.
