Research the Deep

Sorcery

Draw a card. Clash with an opponent. If you win, return Research the Deep to its owner's hand. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of his or her library, then puts that card on the top or bottom. A player wins if his or her card had a higher converted mana cost.)

Don't know how to re-edit my own comments. Two more: Research the Deep and Scattering Stroke. That is all. Really like what you've done so far. Good job!

Hey I have a similar deck ( here ) and was wondering what you think? You gave me some great ideas like Trade Routes , Teferi's Response , Tragic Arrogance . I'm concerned about two things for our decks: wincons and stax. Torpor Orb , Rest in Peace , Overburden , Embargo , Containment Priest , etc are removal in a sense, but control decks like to respond and be reactive instead of proactive. What's your opinion on that, and what kind of non-infinite combo wincon would be good for UB? I've been considering Redeem the Lost , Research the Deep , and Pulse of the Grid as a redundant View from Above but they seem mediocre.

And as one last comment, for the same reason as above, Part the Waterveil is also a one-of extra turn.

As a consolation, here's some more cards that I think to be particularily strong in this deck:

  • Research the Deep is cool because you're both likely to have high-costed spells in your deck, as well as get two chances to return it to your hand. This is as close as you get for a guaranteed random chance to be drawing cards until the end of time, plus get the upside of messing with your opponent's Telling Time.
  • Call to Mind and Pull from the Deep are pristine cards, as you can return everything to your hand that can be exiled with Rebound (which will end up in your graveyard afterwards).
  • Divine Reckoning is a mass-removal spell that will spare your Commander. Tragic Arrogance works in a similar way, but is (at least for my build) more likely to destroy your own mass of artifacts than causing disproportional trouble for the opponent.
  • Insidious Will is another utility counterspell, as it will let you copy (or even counter) something, then - if there's another spell you exiled to rebound later - is able to copy it again. It feels like cheating because it almost is!
  • Return to Dust goes without explanation and is one of the best white utility cards, even when not able to cast it twice.
  • Ugin's Insight is one of the better card draw spells when cast a second time for free, and doesn't even hurt if you can't make use of the second Scry effect because of a board wipe.
  • Knowledge Exploitation is strong as it is, even though you'll have to pay the normal costs. However, keep in mind that both Knowledge Exploitation and the spell you get will have rebound, meaning you get to cast four spells for the cost of one.
  • Last but not least, Aqueous Form provides permanent evasion while fixing your draws. Even as an Aura, I'd say you can't skip this.

Hope that helps :)

I saw a pirate deck that had white and a bunch of blink effects for Rishadan Brigand, Rishadan Cutpurse, Rishadan Footpad and such. Also themed Deadeye Navigator. Might be worth regardless especially if nobody in your meta runs a lot of tokens.

Capsize and Cyclonic Rift. Kiora, the Crashing Wave. Praetor's Grasp. Research the Deep. Syphon Mind. Unnerve. Coastal Piracy.

There is also really weird pirate disurption: Spreading Seas, Lingering Mirage, Rishadan Port.

That's all for now. Good luck!

Anticipate may be a better card than Sleight of Hand and Telling Time is even betterBurning Inquiry may be usefulCerulean Wisps as well Crimson Wisps/Expedite may be playableContingency Plan/Taigam's Scheming is good throw all the lands into graveyard then stack the instants and sorceries in a way that you draw and play all of them Index is also good Epic Experiment may be playable and Faithless LootingFascination may be usable Fleeting Distraction may be usable Goblin Lore seems okIdeas Unbound seem playable except for double blue, while test playing i notice blue tends to be more scarce Inaction Injunction is ok, Inside Out ,Magmatic Insight seems ok considering lands are useless when u draw into themMind Spring, Nagging Thoughts isnt bad because its madness Needle Drop Peek, Psychotic Fury, Quickchange , QuickenReach Through Mists Repeal play for 0 and target a land Research the Deep becuase it also scry's Reverberate may work well, See Beyond Skyscribing Slip Through Space Stuni really like Take Inventory,Think Twice Tormenting Voice, Train of Thought, Twincast, Twisted Image Vision Skeins Visions of Beyond Whispers of the Muse Wild Guess

@Jdw84

It looks like you're playing spells matter with wipes and commander damage. I noticed that 15 of of your 33 Instants and Sorceries were either pointless to play on your turn before you attacked (Counterspell, Mana Leak, Tidal Wave, etc.) or completely wiped the field, which kills Shu Yun (End Hostilities, Fated Retribution, etc).

Shu Yun himself could use a few ways to get around removal, or be resistant to it. White and artifacts are probably going to be your best bet for this. Spectra Ward is a great start, I would suggest something like Gift of Immortality, Darksteel Plate or Indestructibility to keep him around more often.

I kinda think Battle Mastery is redundant here since your commander already lets you have double strike. I would say Lifelink, Inaction Injunction, Research the Deep, Curiosity, Spirit Mantle, Aqueous Form, or any other cheap cantrip/enchantment is great for your deck. You have the right idea with Think Twice, Flashback is great for the deck. Might I also suggest Mystic Retrieval and Past in Flames as great triggers for Shu Yun!

I guess the only thing left is to suggest more Prowess, Jeskai Ascendancy and Soulblade Djinn let you have mass Prowess buffs across the board, the former untapping your creatures and allowing hand cycling, the latter being a 4/3 flier. Of course what prowess deck would be complete without Monastery Mentor, even if his price is exorbitant, he is worth his salt.

Best of luck!!

Nameless Inversion counts as a dragon for spells that look for dragon cards, and you should also be running Silumgar's Scorn with it. As you wish to keep this budget, remember that Peek is a "fair" and cheaper version of Gitaxian Probe which is a card this deck wants. Orator of Ojutai can help stem bleeding early game, and sometimes will net you a card. As for a budget card advantage spell, consider running Research the Deep, Read the Bones, and Painful Truths.

Look at Remand as a Time Walk in modern. It really shines if you try to just buy time and I guess you are trying that. Basically if your opponent taps out for a spell and you get to Remand it, they wasted their turn and you draw an extra card, translated: you get two turns in a row and draw a card.

Mana Confluence is a good shout but... what?

Replacement for Sleight of Hand, so basically for a cantrip, could be:

Serum Visions - not so budget, but the best.

Peek

In the two mana range:

Telling Time

Anticipate

Shadow of Doubt - good if they are fetching, delays your opponent.
