Ratcatcher Discussion

Mirror Entity is uncreative but obviously good (doesn't work with Pack Rat tho)

Ratcatcher is imo pretty underwhelming at CMC 6, I'd replace it with Marrow-Gnawer

100% RedmundR2. They have like 5 cards that care about the actual rat creature type. Relentless Rats and Rat Colony are great, but they don't work with other rats to do anything. Making rat tokens is great also, but they don't help each other. Marrow-Gnawer , Ratcatcher , Swarmyard , Piper of the Swarm , and Ogre Slumlord are the only ways to help rat tribal outside of basic "name a creature type" cards. 5 is not near enough to warrant a hub imo

There are a few options here. If you want to stay in mono black, you can look into dredge: Stinkweed Imp and Golgari Thug and Darkblast . In order to get these cards into your graveyard in the first place, you will need to include cards that allow you to discard. If you have the money for it: Collective Brutality is a fantastic way to do it. If budget is more of a concern then something like Dark Deal is ok but not great. You could always use Rotting Rats to make your self discard (its also fine if you mill it, since you can just unearth it).

One thing I just noticed is that you've got over 60 cards in the deck. It would probably be best if you kept to that 60 card minimum. This will increase the consistency of the deck overall. One way you could do this, if you like having a variety of different cards, is play a card like Mausoleum Secrets . This will allow you to just play one copy of niche cards like Distress , Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip, and Go for the Throat . You can also cut cards like Mind Rot and Ratcatcher (3 mana for that discard ability is too expensive, and 6 mana is definitely too expensive). If it were me though, I would just cut all the extraneous cards, not even bother with the Mausoleum Secrets and just focus on the rats.

If you wanted to do multi color (it will be more expensive though). I would recommend a few cards. Red-black is the route I would take. You get cards like Faithless Looting and Experimental Frenzy . The looting is good for dumping cards into your graveyard. Frenzy is a combo card that allows you to keep playing cards off the top of your library as long as you have mana (and as long as it isn't a second land). If you want to go the frenzy route, I would recommend Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx as a good way to make a bunch of mana and cast a bunch of rats. This is kind of a different way to play the deck and might be too muddy with the self mill plan. So I would either choose the mill or the frenzy plan.

If you like brewing decks, I host a deck brewing podcast. You can check out all the decks we've brewed on my tapped out page. If you want to listen to it, I'd greatly appreciate it. We are on iTunes (search: mtg Cold Brew) or on our website: mtgcoldbrew.buzzsprout.com

Let me know if you have more questions. This deck looks rad.

If you are going for modern legal, then cut the necropotence for anotherRatcatcher. Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek are solid at disrupting your opponents. Marrow-Gnawer is also pretty fun. If you don't care about your decks legality, four copies of Hymn to Tourach should teach any one that they aren't allowed to have fun. Personally, I would cut the rat colonies, and ad a discard/disruption/more removal package. Budget replacements for the Thoughtseizes and Inquisitions would be stuff like duress. Also for added spice Liliana of the Veil can really hurt any deck that likes having creatures or cards in hand. Hope this helps!

It depends on exactly how the cards are altered, and it's ultimately up to the head judge's discretion. You need to make it a point to ask the head judge for their opinion before the event starts. In general, an altered card:

  • Must be an actual Magic card (i.e. you can't alter a Rat token or a blank piece of cardstock into a Ravenous Rats)
  • Must actually be the card the alter says it is (i.e. you can't alter a Gonti, Lord of Luxury into a Ratcatcher)
  • Can't obscure the name, mana cost, or rules text, or otherwise make the card unrecognizeable
  • Can't cause the card to become marked (i.e. paint that makes the alter noticeably thicker and/or heavier than other cards in the deck)

It isn't required that you bring unaltered copies of the cards to prove that you own them, but they'll be good to have on hand if the judge disapproves of any of your alters and asks you to replace them.
