Quiet Speculation Discussion

ZendikariWol, I think Sevinne, the Chronoclasm is actually really fun.

To start, it combos with one of my favorite cards from last year's set, Reality Scramble , IDK how good that is, but it'd be a blast.

For real value, I think the deck looks to be a graveyard value control deck. Maybe a bit of prison, considering how you can become 'immortal' by enchanting Sevinne, the Chronoclasm with a Pariah , or equipping it with a Pariah's Shield .

Swiftfoot Boots , Champion's Helm , etc. to protect it, then abuse it's ability to combo with Flashback, like Deep Analysis , jumpstart like Chemister's Insight , retrace like Oona's Grace , and aftermath like Refuse / Cooperate

Total, there are a lot of good spells to abuse with it:

Flashback -

Cackling Counterpart

Deep Analysis

Desperate Ravings

Echo of Eons

Faithless Looting

Increasing Devotion

Increasing Vengeance

Mystic Retrieval

Past in Flames

Scour All Possibilities

Think Twice

Jump-Start -

Radical Idea

Beacon Bolt

Chemister's Insight

Risk Factor

Retrace -

Oona's Grace

Reality Scramble

Call the Skybreaker

Aftermath -

Leave / Chance

Failure / Comply

Farm / Market

Reduce / Rubble

Refuse / Cooperate

Mission Briefing

Snapcaster Mage

Quiet Speculation

Runic Repetition

Catalyst Stone

That's all I can think of right now, if I remember any more sweet cards with Sevinne, I'll tell you!

Good start!

More cards you should consider to make cards like Quiet Speculation more viable: Increasing Ambition, Increasing Confusion and Deep Analysis

Here are a few other suggestions I think would work well with your deck: Academy Elite, Pieces of the Puzzle, Possessed Skaab and The Mirari Conjecture.

In terms of what to cut, Crab Umbra does protect your commander from a board wipe and lets you untap, but it doesn't help with Dralnu's painful downside and there are more efficient ways to untap your commander. Corrupted Conscience also seems a bit random in your deck, since it doesn't really synergize with anything, though it's still a powerful card. Unwind seems like the weakest and narrowest of your counters, of which you already plenty. Nightveil Sprite is a great card in 60-card constructed, but might fall short in a multi-player, 100-card format.

Great deck! I do not look forward to playing against you...

Only three cards do what you ask according to this scryfall search: Grinning Totem, Life's Finale, and Quiet Speculation. The first two, you already have, but that third one is not even good enough even if Tariel had blue because of the fact that it by its very nature cannot find creatures.

Sorry, but WotC just hasn't played around with this idea enough yet.

As others have mentioned, the other way would be to use either mill cards or processors with cards that can exile cards from libraries.

Maybe I should actually give some constructive budget suggestions rather than just ragging on the deck, huh?

I love Quiet Speculation and think it is vastly underrated. It gets better when more colors are added, but even in mono blue you can go get Deep Analysis for card draw, Cackling Counterpart to copy a Scourge of Fleets or whatever your Phyrexian Metamorph has become, or Artful Dodge to make sure your beater is truly unblockable.

Confound would be a good way to protect the commander.

Trophy Mage can search up your Loxodon Warhammer, Crawlspace or Chromatic Lantern (I would replace that one with Unstable Obelisk or Worn Powerstone).

Treasure Mage can get Spine of Ish Sah, Argentum Armor or Staff of Nin

Trinket Mage gets Basilisk Collar if you really want to keep that, and of course Sol Ring too. You can swap in Wayfarer's Bauble for Wanderer's Twig or the other one for actual ramp, not just a tutor. Brittle Effigy is another great target for the trinket tutorer.

That sounds pretty good! I actually have all those pieces in the deck already. maybe i run Quiet Speculation to fetch Increasing Vengeance + Devil's Play + Mystic Retrieval into the yard then mystic retrieval flashed back to return the devil's play or just play it from the yard and copy it twice with the Increasing Vengeance

Quiet Speculation you mentioned, miampizza, & Altar of the Lost. Interesting card I didn't know was a "Thing", i'm gonna think about a deck option with this card, TY. I don't see it really working in here as there is slim pickings for U/B Flashbacks.... but R/U might be fun? W/U???

ideas for in here though, one Is legal Modern, one isn't I think?? Treasure Cruise or Dig Through Time might work in here.

and slight issues with X4 Delver's in here. you are only at 14 spells to flip him and 22 Creat/Enchants + 24 lands, which = 46 that don't. (do you need 24 lands?) Would Serum Visions help a bit more? or I would lower to a 3X of possibly? even +1X Think Twice -1X Delver/Secrets?

I like your Skaab Ruinator in the SB... could you get away with SB 2x Artful Dodge and add in Skaab? (if you do, you should think about Delver suggestion above a little more).

not sure how far you are going with the "Self-Mill", but, Tome Scour, Chronic Flooding? +Laboratory Maniac???

final thought. Chasm Skulker? do you "Draw" enough?

GL, just some thoughts....

Well, there are a few cards that comes to my mind.

First there are better ways to self mill than Civilized Scholar  Flip such as Dream Twist, Jace, Memory Adept or Armored Skaab.

For draws you could consider Visions of Beyond and in case things turn sour you can always pick up a few Noxious Revival

Oh yeah and if you're playing casual and games lasts for a while, Increasing Confusion is pretty brutal.

Quiet Speculation looks fun, though I've never tested it.

I think the deck is pulling too many directions. I understand playing cards like Mind's Dilation, they are super fun. If you are trying to be competitive though I would pull these cards:

Mind's Dilation

Vampire Nighthawk

Spell Crumple (doesn't work with commanders like it used to)

Diabolic Tutor (too expensive. I get it if you're saving money though. The alternatives cost big bucks)

Angelic Accord (not consistent enough)

Boon Reflection (if it doubled instances of life gain it would be better but as an effect, just gaining life doesn't win you the game)

Venser's Journal (gaining life isn't that important honestly and having an unlimited hand size is a nice bonus but seven cards in hand is more than enough nine times out of ten. I don't like paying five for that effect)

Before I give you my general add list let me make a distinction. There's building a deck for fun and there's building a deck to be competitive. You decide which you would like to build and don't let people tell you you're wrong if you like a card. That being said I will only tell you how I think you could be more competitive with this deck.

I would cut most of the life gain cards that are here simply to ping and gain life. They seem to be there to facilitate the cards that get bigger when you gain life. There aren't enough of these life-gain-beaters in Epser colors to really be effective. I would rebuild a control shell and find more ways to get the cards that let Oloro insta-win. You are playing in WBU, it is easy to find, play and protect just about anything.

This would change the way the deck plays entirely and might bug people who don't like playing against a deck that plays like a game of solitaire though so please, do what feels right to you. I'll give you a list of some cards that I think will help regardless though.

Heliod's Pilgrim and a package for her. Removal (Faith's Fetters), Reanimate (Diabolic Servitude) and Draw (Underworld Connections).

Capsize is just too good. I always run it in blue. Period.

Faerie Trickery is another exile counter spell.

Dream Fracture counters and draws you a card.

Negate it is limited but it hits so much.

Duress gets rid of bad stuff and lets you see the blue player's hand.

Greed I know you have one in there but it's too good not to have another with as good a mana base as you have.

Clutch of the Undercity can replace your diabolic tutor. It costs less to search with and finds you several win conditions (Aetherflux Reservoir) while doubling as removal. I would say the same for Brainspoil and Muddle the Mixture which both go get parts of your infinite life gain loop (Vizkopa Guildmage & Exquisite Blood).

I would trade out Sphere of Safety with something cheaper like Island Sanctuary or Solitary Confinement.

I am a fan of Quiet Speculation and a package for it including Increasing Ambition which could go get a win condition or two.

It looks like a really fun deck to play as it is and is very good for a first deck. I'm impressed. I was much worse when I started.

A buddy of mine and I are putting together a website for budget EDH and it has some good deck building tips. You should check it out and let me know what you think. There are one or two things that aren't finished yet but it's coming along.
