Proclamation of Rebirth Discussion

Cereal_Killer on Ajani/Gideon pure white

Seems a nice deck, but I would like to make some sugestions.

First of all I'd change the format (divide cards for type: land, creatures, ecc, instead of white and non-white)

I'd change Take Vengeance, Luminous Bond and Defang into Path to Exile, one of the best white removal in modern

I'd also add Honor of the Pure instead of Call for Unity. It only gives +1+1, but it costs less, making your deck a bit more fast

Then, why not things like Soul's Attendant, Soul Warden, Martyr of Sands, Serra Ascendant, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, Oblivion Ring, Ranger of Eos, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Worship, Flickerwisp, Aven Mindcensor, Squadron Hawk

Last thing, you definitely need a sideboard. Some suggestions could be: Stony Silence, Leyline of Sanctity, Rest in Peace, Kataki, War's Wage, Kor Firewalker, Brave the Elements, Disenchant, Proclamation of Rebirth

Looks like a solid foundation for a Martyr Proc or Soul Sisters style deck, which is among the more legitimately competitive lifegain decks. That deck uses Proclamation of Rebirth to recur Serra Ascendant and Martyr of Sands, and Ranger of Eos and Squadron Hawk to keep cards in hand for those massive heals.

Core Set 2019 brought Resplendent Angel, which seems like a solid inclusion in any deck that gains a lot of life. If you include her, maybe Shalai, Voice of Plenty as protection and Lyra Dawnbringer to buff your new angels and give them lifelink? If not, Angel of Invention has lifelink, buffs all your creatures, and puts some 2/2 Servo bodies on the battlefield.

As a dedicated lifegain deck, you actually have a ton of options.

FadingLight Hey! I would be happy to, I am really busy with work so sorry if it takes a while but I am more than happy to. As for this deck, my problem with it is it is somewhere between Martyr of Sands + Proclamation of Rebirth and traditional B/W tokens. What is the plan, token aggro, or white control, this will help inform any suggestions I make.

Prehcise on Proclamation vs Return?

Versus control decks: Proclamation of Rebirth or Return to the Ranks in sideboard? PoR forecast ability would great vs decks with a lot of removal and counters that run into late game. Return is great for a surprise field flood burst. Thoughts?

Here is my deck list for reference:

muelonil,
I like the way you categorize the two subarchetypes here. With the HEAVY caveat that I don't have that many reps with the deck yet, here are a few thoughts:

  • Something to keep in mind when deckbuilding is that each non-White card we add to the 75 reduces the value of Martyr of Sands by 3 life, which in turn reduces the value of Serra Ascendant.
  • For this reason, Rule of Law might be worth looking at vs. Damping Sphere, and Runed Halo (thought it's super-pricey) or additional Nevermores vs. Sorcerous Spyglass. There are obviously other tradeoffs in the cards too, so I'm not sure what would be best for your playstyle/meta/75. But it's maybe something to think about :-)
  • I was running 3x Surgical Extraction in the side for a while and it saved my bacon a number of times. But I recently switched to Rest in Peace ... partly because it's a White card, but also because it barely hurts us post-board (since opponents almost always bring in Gravehate against us, making Proclamation of Rebirth dead in hand anyways). Here too, I'm not really recommending RIP over Extraction (especially since Extraction vs. Tron is sooooooo good); just throwing out some more thoughts ...
  • A few other points on the Gideon package: The Gideons are very strong vs. Wrath effects and Planeswalkers (which can be a struggle otherwise). Also, Gideon of the Trials' Emblem can help vs. some Combo decks.
  • Speaking of 'Walkers: I've tried Hex Parasite and it's very strong, but it suffers sometimes as a non-White card too. I'm on Flash-flyers lately, and Restoration Angel is my current favorite ... Archangel Avacyn  Flip was good but a little too cute, and though I love Aven Mindcensor's effect I like Resto's bigger size.

Draw well!

10 lands is less than half of what you need. Yes, there are 3 signets in your deck. No, they are not enough either.

Also, what I meant was that perhaps it would be easier to adapt the martyrproc shell, to life-gain-wincons. Martyrproc wins by gaining life, and holding on until the constant card advantage from Proclamation of Rebirth ends the game.

Your current build will most likely beat burn, but not much else. You don't really stop an opponent from building card advantage against you. Many games will be you popping life-gain after lifegain, against an opponent who plays bigger and bigger threats, and you'll be lacking mana like crazy (to curve directly to 5, you need 26 mana sources or something like that).

I think you should find something more reliable to gain life, other than random creatures. Auriok Salvagers and Sunbeam Spellbomb could do, but other ways of getting the spellbomb back would also work. The spellbomb could be replaced by other cheap artifacts - perhaps you're on to something with the Scroll of Avacyn. Martyr of Sands and Proclamation of Rebirth is an option, but is better when you have some way of filling your hand with white cards (hello Squadron Hawk). Yet another option is Isochron Scepter and a lifegaining instant (I like this idea, since you can play sweepers in the early game without losing much).
