Pharika's Disciple

Creature — Centaur Warrior

Deathtouch (Any amount of damage this deals to a creature is enough to destroy it.)

Renown 1 (When this creature deals combat damage to a player, if it isn't renowned, put a +1/+1 counter on it and it becomes renowned.)

Pheres-Band Warchief and Stonehoof Chieftain seem like strong inclusions in general. The latter is high CMC, but my suggestion is that you take this deck in a ramp direction anyway.

Step 1: Add Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and swap some creatures around to improve devotion. Ex: Swap Centaur Courser for Swordwise Centaur, Pharika's Disciple for Seton, Krosan Protector, Pheres-Band Tromper for Jolrael's Centaur. This also makes Nylea's Disciple more effective.

Step 2: Add enchantments that help you tap forests for additional mana like Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Utopia Sprawl, and Vernal Bloom. These gain the benefits from Herald of the Pantheon and Dowsing Shaman and provide incredible acceleration.

Step 3: Find something to do with the mana. The easy answer would be to draw with Harmonize and play more centaurs. But I think the more interesting answer is to go for broke with Genesis Wave or Primal Surge (after removing Fruition). Play all (or most) of your deck, gain a ton of life, throw in Concordant Crossroads for haste, and swing with an indestructible, trampling centaur army.

That's how I'd do it at least, though I must admit I am a sucker for flashy plays.

I started something like this and it can be a decent deck. Have some suggestions:

  1. With your current mana curve the deck calls for about 24 lands. I would slice the high spells like Nissa's Judgment and Gideon's Phalanx. As mentioned before budget dual-lands would be very helpful. 4x Tranquil Expanse and probably 4x Evolving Wilds. I'm not a fan of Holdout Settlement at all. But maybe a 1-2 of. Rogue's Passage is getting in the way here.

  2. Gryff's Boon is an automatic 4x in renown, imo. It does the same job as Grasp of the Hieromancer and Angelic Gift but it's cheaper and can come back late game.

  3. Gideon's Reproach is probably better than Celestial Flare MB. Pretty much whacks everything people play.

  4. Kytheon's Irregulars is better than people lead on. I don't know if I would run 4x but he's certainly better than Pharika's Disciple. He essentially the same thing but better.

  5. Consul's Lieutenant should be an automatic 4x. He's just too good not to. But consider the when making your mana base. With that Archangel of Tithes should probably come out unless you really have heavy white.

All in all I think there needs to be more creatures, less subversion (and better) spells, and work on the mana base. All can be done on a budget.

Or something like that.

Since you've asked for suggestions, I offer mine based on our friendship on tappedout.net.

Congratulations on your strong finish at FNM! I can imagine how a burn deck may cause problems. Pulse of Murasa from the sideboard may remedy that matchup, but I do not suggest maindecking it automatically. Also in the sideboard against burn deck, consider Jaddi Offshoot. Retreat to Kazandu is a great target against enchantment hate that typically targets Hardened Scales. Do you have room for it in the sideboard? I think Plummet is better than Longshot Squad, because of casting cost alone, despite ignoring its synergy.

With fighting on the schedule, Pharika's Disciple would destroy any-toughness target. It may also earn its own +1/+1 counter without supporting spells. At instant speed, Lead by Example smells like it should be automatically included somewhere -- sideboard?

I wonder- would Saddleback Lagac serve you better than Hangarback Walkers? I know I type with blasphemy, but I fear it and Managorger Hydra are too fragile in the early game. I would like to know how often the 1/1 flying thopters matter in early-to-mid games. Likewise, I question how often Surrak, the Hunt Caller's mechanic is needed, especially knowing you field smaller creatures when cast; is haste needed? I like Harvester Troll over Surrak, for the same cmc. Perhaps a slight trimming of those creatures for Saddleback Lagac and some trolls may help propel your +1/+1 counters strategy, while offering a sexy 3+ power attacker or fighter.

I cannot argue with your land count. The only suggestion I could offer would be to consider 2x Evolving Wilds to thin your mana if drawn. Honestly, you probably want as many lands to tap as possible each turn, so two should be enough to fetch lands while thinning two non-tap lands in the process.

I like how your deck falls below 2cmc, but this can be misleading with Hollaback Girl. I am excited to see this deck evolve, and what suggestions you may consider from other builders, too! Play and be well!

Thanks for the suggestion, however Pharika's Disciple isn't and elf spell, so Gnarlroot Trapper could work for some of the elf cards to help bring them out which isn't a bad idea.
