Paupers' Cage

Artifact

At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, if that player has two or fewer cards in hand, Paupers' Cage deals 2 damage to him or her.

love the deck - I have a similar concept (less self discard, more bounce) Mind crusher, Dream Breaker

possible includes:

Okiba-Gang Shinobi - heavy hitting discard, and resets Burglar Rat & its ilk

Nezumi Shortfang  Flip - instant speed discard, and once hand is empty acts as another The Rack effect

Words of Waste - pairs stupidly well with Geth's Grimoire. all the cards!

Painful Quandary - makes every spell hurt

Oppression - painful quandary's smaller, more angry brother

Paupers' Cage - aoe rack effect is good

Wheel of Torture - aoe rack effect, with the best flavortext pun ever

Bottomless Pit yet another aoe discard

Rackling - rack with legs

  • Playing a deck like this will inevitably lead to your opponent without much of a hand.
  • This will leave the spells that damage your opponent for discarding mostly useless.
  • At the same time, this means anything they happen to come across, they will play almost immediately, meaning your discard strategy won't be nearly as effective.
  • The Rack type effects are best for this kind of deck.
  • Examples of viable rack type cards are Paupers' Cage , Skullcage , and Bulwark .
  • You are already using these in the forms of Lavaborn Muse and Hellfire Mongrel
  • Black Vise type effects could be useful if you plan to force feed your opponent, but since you're making them discard, I don't see much point in that.
  • If your goal is to discard, running mill cards isn't going to help your strategy. You're reducing the deck's consistency by including them.
  • You're going to want to run Painful Quandary simply due to its taxing nature.
  • Lastly, you have a lot of mana rocks, but no artifacts that serve any utility, and more questionably, no Chromatic Lantern . While you have some X and higher cost spells, all that mana could be a dead draw, especially considering you're running 37 lands already.
  • Add in something like Strionic Resonator , or anything else that can make use of your permanent's abilities.

  • Keep in mind you're using a strategy that is considered low-power unless it is executed in a specific way. I don't see you having very much fun with this deck as it currently is, but who knows, maybe you are.

Here’s a few ideas for you to kick around that would really add to the strong discard theme:

Some card ideas for ya since you have a strong discard theme going on as well. These ideas can also be used as another win con in case opponents remove your critters that poison them.

If you like Paupers' Cage then you'd like The Rack too. It does the same thing but has 1 cmc

NV_1980 Thanks for the Ideas man! I do agree that i can definitely add more in terms of mana ramp, draw, and payoffs.

I do really like the idea of adding the mana rocks, but I have to test first Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual since I've never tried them as ramp pieces before.

I most likely won't put in cards such as Hymn to Tourach or Mind Twist Primarily because they're single-use targeted discard. The only times I'd consider discard spells that don't go for all players / all opponents is when they're repeatable.

As for Paupers' Cage and the like, I'm defninitely adding them soon when I have the budget for it!

Your suggestions definitely helped and I hope to add them to the decklist over time.

I like this deck; I'd recommend some changes though. Adding some more mana rocks and/or other ramp options helps this deck's speed a bit. Cards like Sol Ring, Jet Medallion, Thought Vessel, Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual could be considered.

You already have some nice draw options, but in mono-black I usually go for Underworld Connections and/or Phyrexian Arena no matter what other options I have, because these are so reliable; they don't require you to do anything in order to work.

Hymn to Tourach and Mind Twist are great discard spells. Paupers' Cage, Rackling, Wheel of Torture and The Rack all have great potential to damage opponents for having too few cards in their hands. Bloodchief Ascension and Painful Quandary are especially powerful in a deck like this.

Hope any of this helps; good luck brewing and playing!
