Onyx Talisman

Artifact

Whenever a black spell is played, you may pay (3). If you do, untap target permanent.

Upon going through this list, I immediately pulled up a list of Conspiracy 2 commons and uncommons and was not dissapointed. Try things like Death Wind for mana sinks and removal. Marchesa's Decree and Deadly Designs might be out of your price range, but they're both worth considering. The same is true for untap engines Onyx Talisman and Jandor's Saddlebags .

You might want to replace some of the direct damage and lifedrain.

Looks great, can't wait to play against it!

First of: Welcome to EDH: the format where you can pretty much brew anything you like!

However, some cards are much stronger than others in this format, and theres a general rule to evaluate the cards in your deck. First you have to evaluate how you win the game. Then you have to look at the cards and say: "Does this card forward that goal". For instance a card like Stronghold Confessor is not very good generally. It is a creature that deals at most 3 damage. At this point you could also play a Diabolic Tutor, finding part of a two-card combo that will win you the game. Avoid any cards that dont forward your gameplan. The best example is Serra Ascendant. A lot of people wrongly include this in their decks. Yes, it is a 5/5 flying lifelinker for . But if you can't kill them with it, the 20+ damage it might deal is not relevant.

So what cards should you run? Usually the answer is combo of some sort. And then all the cards that get you there. In black you can add a reanimation package (Pathrazer of Ulamog or better It That Betrays does win you a game if played on t2), you can go for an infinite damage combo (see for inspiration), or you can get lots and lots of mana using Cabal Coffers and the like and play a very big Torment of Hailfire.

If you wanna play reanimator you wanna get all the good reanimation spells

Most of them arent that expensive. The expensive part about this strategy is buying the targets. But it should be ok, just find some you like.

If you wanna build combo just play all the tutors you can afford. Also the all-in ones like Demonic Consultation.

If you wanna build big-mana.deck consider the following

... and so on. A wierd tech you will not find anywhere else: Onyx Talisman ;)

Good luck brewing my guy!

IMO I would do the following.

Cut the following:

  1. Typhoid Rats

  2. Deserted Temple (not worth using your second tutor for) (Unless you own one)

  3. Gauntlet of Power (Get Extraplanar Lens instead. Its cheaper and better tbh)

  4. Dark Ritual

  5. Vampire Nighthawk (idk i think he is good in our meta to discourage attackers, but hmmmm lol)

Add or Consider:

  1. Onyx Talisman (full cycle but you can only depend on Black, IDK it seems ok)

  2. Boompile

  3. Unstable Obelisk

  4. Nevinyrral's Disk

  5. Perilous Vault

After more playtesting, I think Onyx Talisman is garbage. Drop it.

(Sneaks in literally last second before date)

Onyx Talisman provides that little extra oomph of mana from Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Cabal Coffers, and Cabal Coffers. It can even provide infinite mana with the correct combos.

Added those two to the maybeboard to be added in, so I don't forget later. They and the rest of the maybeboard will be considered in my upcoming attempt to rank which cards are most valued for this deck, after the 83.

Also glad to see that you were compelled to share your opinion! (Insert shameless "feel free to +1"). I definitely spent quite a few boring nights just derping around the internet "researching". Although, despite all that I've filled out, there are still a few cards that still don't have a connection to the theme. Please feel free to spurt out a few ideas if you have the time and/or fluffs.

Eiti3 - Glad to hear I could help! I saw your deck idea and was struck by how much thought had been put into it, so I wanted to give my $0.02.

I still question the inclusion of Onyx Talisman. There are few nonland permanents in your deck I'd want to untap repeatedly, and the cost of activation is steep: 3 mana plus whatever other spell you're casting. I'd suggest Expedition Map as a tutor to fetch up whatever land you need.

On that note, consider Petrified Field. If you're facing land destruction (which you should expect), this is a lifesaver.

That post is one of the best posts I've ever seen for helping someone with a deck. I am sad to say that I'm a stubborn bastard. I'm keen on building decks that nobody has ever built. I will never ever (indefinitely) build a deck that is even remotely similar to another deck. So cards like Rotlung Reanimator, Bloodgift Demon, etc aren't good enough for me, even though they are REALLY good cards. I understand that makes no rational sense but stay with me for a minute. I am going to rebuild your list, but with my own choices and see if that helps me actually cut the majority of my cards.

  • Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker (1)
  • 32 Lands (I play on the risky side, have Crypt of Agadeem and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth which I've dubbed both of the two possible places Jesus was buried) (33)
  • 24 Shadowborn Apostles (57)
  • 7 normal demons - Archfiend of Depravity (removal), Demon of Dark Schemes (removal/reanimator), Harvester of Souls (draw), Ob Nixilis, Unshackled (finisher/lock), Overseer of the Damned (removal), Reaper from the Abyss (removal), Rune-Scarred Demon (tutor). (64)
  • 3 staples/needed for theme - Thrumming Stone (staple), Rings of Brighthearth (staple), Conspiracy (theme). (67)
  • 4 A "Must" Ramp - Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Onyx Talisman, Crypt Ghast. (71)
  • 4 A "Must" Draw - Necropotence, Phyrexian Arena, Grim Haruspex, Mindless Automaton. (75)
  • 2 "Must" Removal - Grave Pact, Black Sun's Zenith. (77)
  • 2 "Must" Tutors - Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor. (79)
  • 2 "Must" Recursion - Patriarch's Bidding, Living Death (81)
  • 2 Energy Combo - Aetherworks Marvel, Decoction Module (83)

  • 83 Cards that are "Needed". That's leaves 17 for Conspiracy, combos, and flavor.

Believe it or not, this helped me cut 10 cards rather almost immediately. And I have the worst time cutting cards. I don't know if this is what most people do, but this is the best way I've ever seen to help me with my decks. Thank you so much ive-been-degaussed. You've no idea how much you've helped my MTG experience.

I'm currently, as of making this comment, about to leave for a date to a Halloween Theme Park, so I will eventually rank the top 17 out of the 41 choices that I have tomorrow, or later tonight when I get back.
