Necromancer's Assistant

Creature — Zombie

When Necromancer's Assistant enters the battlefield, put the top three cards of your library into your graveyard.

Here's some recommendations for cheap/casual reanimator from my experience building/playing these kinds of decks with friends:

  • More efficient reanimation mechanisms. Gravewaker has a really steep cost for what it does, I'd run 1 maximum. Cards like Apprentice Necromancer and/or Doomed Necromancer are cheap alternatives that let you reanimate much sooner.
  • Self mill and/or discard outlets. Need to get your fatties into the graveyard before you can reanimate them. Morgue Thrull and Necromancer's Assistant are good for self-mill and can block to buy time. Something like Abandon Hope might be fun for discard + disrupting their hand.
  • Look for "enters the battlefield" triggers on your reanimation targets. Dread Cacodemon doesn't make the best target since it only triggers when cast from hand. Something like Myr Battlesphere is a fun reanimation target with 'gains haste/sac at end of turn' type reanimation spells since it's 4 direct damage, swings for 8, and leaves behind behind 4 1/1s (also a great reason to play Dread Return , a super busted reanimation spell that is banned in modern and only costs a little over a dollar!). Or maybe Sundering Titan to kill a ton of lands. Both are also easy to cast late game being colorless.
  • Consider being more heavily black, and have more of a balance between counterspells and removal. If you are primarily concerned about creatures and are in black, removal is far more flexible than counter spells. There's tons of 2 mana black removal spells, many cost about a dollar for a playset of 4, ( Doom Blade , Ultimate Price , Walk the Plank , and Victim of Night all come to mind). I'd also advise against highly specific counters like Annul , as they have a good probability of being dead cards.

It turns out that there are lots of card that are marked as illegal in Noble that should be legal. Some of these cards include Corpse Hauler , Drainpipe Vermin , Necromancer's Assistant and Dawnstrike Paladin . Am I missing something? Or do these cards need to be fixed?

Have you thought about graveyard loading from your library instead of your hand? Creatures like Wailing Ghoul and Necromancer's Assistant could act like chump blockers while helping you load your graveyard for a reanimate. Maybe even Millikin.

Also if you go that route you could splash with blue and load it really fast with cards like Tome Scour, Dream Twist, and Contingency Plan.

Might help you load faster and reduce mulligans.

Just mentoning, the sttich together mechanic does not really work. "They are melded" means nothing. What is the advantage of having two creatures as one? Do they still have their own abilities? What is their P/T? Additionally, Experimental Hostage is completely out of color pie for white, same Frakenstein and red and Necromancer's Assistant is already a card.

I am yet to contribute to the idea though:

Runebound - When this creature enters the battlefield, you may return an instant or sorcery card with converted mana cost equal to or less than the creature's converted mana cost. If you do, sacrifice the creature.

Obviously a cool Wizard-tribal themed mechanic that forces you to choose between creature and spell. Example:

Tomewielder 2UR
Creature - Human Wizard
Uncommon

Runebound
When Tomewielder enters the battlefield, you may draw 2 cards, then discard 2 cards.

If you prefer the embalm mechanic, I suggest Orzhov (B/W). Black cards tend to benefit from cards entering your graveyard (discarding or sacrificing), and you can just bring them back with the embalm! Plus, they are zombies so you can try and get some combos out of there.

Cards like Necromancer's Assistant can get the creatures in the cemetery so you can embalm them back.

Cards like Bone Splinters can get combos with the embalm creatures as well.

And these are just some ideas, I1m sure you can come up with something crazy.

You have to make some cuts somewhere, which means you will have to make the tough decisions to cut some very good cards.

Welcome to the world of Magic deck building.

If I were you I'd make my plan to win:

put cards in my graveyard + get back the most powerful ones = get big Creatures on the field early to smash face + get cards in hand that destroy Opponent Creatures

A secondary idea is to Regenerate as many of your Creatures as you can. You may have to drop this secondary idea to get your number of cards to 60.

Cards that fall outside that equation, such as ones that make your Opponent discard cards, will have to go.

I would ditch these ones:

Provoke
Ranger's Guile
Hypnotic Cloud
Mind Rot
Nightsnare
Duress (I KNOW, it's a bloody good card, but something has to go and it doesn't fit the theme)
I'm iffy about Rakshasa's Secret - it fits the theme but you've got so many other ways of putting cards into your Graveyard. You don't want to end up milling yourself
Deathreap Ritual
Drudge Beetle
Elvish Aberration
Liliana's Specter (keep this if your Opponent has a lot of fliers)
Necromancer's Assistant - body is too weak

Those to me are the clear cuts.

You will also need to look at cards with conflicting aims - some of them need to Delve, which removes cards from your Graveyard, whereas others get bigger the more Creatures or other cards you KEEP in your Graveyard.

My feeling on this is probably to ditch the ones that get bigger depending on the number of cards in your 'yard. This is because, with the amount of cards you will be discarding, you should be able to play your Delve cards quite early.

You need to get rid of 10 more cards to make the deck 36 Non-Land cards. Then add 24 Lands.

Be careful when Delving to keep four cards with different types, to get Delerium bonuses.

I hope that has helped a bit.

At the very least you can see how I chose cards, and can do that for yourself if you decide to build a different way.

Thanks for your help!! But I still have some questions:

When i was making my deck I just took out all the black and green (and mixed) cards out of my 1000 card box that looked cooland i quickly found a re-occuring theme, many of them discarded cards and brought cards back to the hand or the battlefield from the graveyard, I wanted to focus my deck on that interaction, so I want to ask you about the cards you think I should drop:

Crop Sigil

After I add lands to my deck im gonna have enough cards in diffrent types(land, creature, sorcery, instant) to play that card, also it discards a lot of cards and it basically nets me a monster and a land by choice from the graveyard for 4 mana it was actually one of the cards I considered best in this deck, so I am kinda confused, which cards do I lack to interact?

Necromancer's Assistant

Just a card to mill my deck with a bit, I agree with throwing out that one.

Corpse Churn

nets me a card of choice from my graveyard for just 2 mana, again i really like this card, because the battles i had with my buddy often lasted till everyone had no cards on the field and in the hand, so everyone who drew useless cards or lands lost, and since this seem to be such a universal card, i dont know why i shouldn't add it.

Rakshasa's Secret

just seem to me like a better mind rot, same mana cost, and additional effect that helps the theme i was going for.

Commune with the Gods

puts cards in the graveyard and nets me a creature for 2 mana, again in a topdeck duel it seems solid.

I understand that I might lack cards that benefit from having many cards on the graveyard, or that I overdo it on the theme by having to many cards that throw away cards from my deck.

About control, I actually have some more black kill cards but i struggle to insert them, because i already have too many cards i need to get down to 35-40 cards.

Now that you know what kind of deck i was going for I hope you have some more recommendations.

Any constructive criticism is welcomed!

Oh wow. So many great suggestions! You rock dude! Awesome!

Nightscape Familiar looks like it would fit in here perfect. Especially since he has regen. Very nice.

I was gonna run Undead Warchief but I was trying to keep the deck cheap enough I can buy it and my Vampire cards next week. So instead of him I have Diregraf Captain and Gisa and Geralf(bomb card btw). As for his cost lowering I'm trying to set it up where I can bring Rooftop Storm out early an cast creatures for free.

You're spot on about needing some drawing spells. No idea how I missed that! Rush of Knowledge looks good. Also considering Pilfered Plans or Whispering Madness since I could cast it more than once with it's cipher ability. But I think Rush of Knowledge would get the most results.

For some early milling the cards you recommended look great! I had Screeching Skaab on my list. I liked Returned Reveler better, cause he mills both players. But you're right I could drop Laboratory Brute and run both! Necromancer's Assistant also looks good!

Liliana being my favorite Planeswalker, naturally she was my first choice. But my friend I play with has a habit of going after planeswalkers before anything else. So I would have to chance her not getting killed. Although, just thought of this, her second ability could replace Diabolic Tutor and she can mill. Hmmm need to consider that one for sure!

One question though, if she got milled what could I use to get her out?

And yep your beast deck is a beast! You have so many good decks I still haven't looked through them All. I'm gonna start on my green deck later tonight, after I decide which tribe for sure.

Glad I'm not bugging you bro. Have a great day and have a gummy worm! (Sour ones are bomb!)And if you have nothing better to do you can look at my demon deck I made the other day. ("Triple six Clubhouse") like most of my decks the name is hip-hop inspired.

Btw, you have no idea how much I appreciate your help man!
