had to stop to think about non-blue counters once you mentioned it. I remembered Avoid Fate , Dawn Charm , Rebuff the Wicked , Dash Hopes , and Mana Tithe . but after that I was stumped on any others.

then I checked the gatherer...

Artifact Blast , Burnout , Red Elemental Blast , Pyroblast , Guttural Response , Lapse of Certainty , Illumination , Mages' Contest , Molten Influence , Not of This World , Warping Wail , and Withering Boon .

and thats not counting Bind and Rust , which while counters, don't counter spells.

Hey friend. I'm glad you have some casual decks -- makes me feel a lot better about making this cEDH, since the last thing I'd want is to help you build an expensive deck that you'll never play(: I'd advocate using proxies on this one before you buy expensive cards in paper. Most playgroups are fine with that, especially for WIP decks like this, which will save you a LOT of money as you iterate on what works best here.

Reito Lantern is not really a combo piece... I mean, you can tutor anything out with Sunforger repeatedly, but you'd need to already have infinite colored mana AND naturally draw the Lantern, which is kinda a long shot. If you already have infinite colored mana (or even infinite colorless and two colored sources), just cast Fireball, Aurelia's Fury, Comet Storm, or Conflagrate, you know?

You did a good job with 5- and 6-drops. Your next cutting-floor task: cut everything (besides removal/etc) that only combos with one card. Guttersnipe, for example, might deal 10 damage to each opponent over the course of the game, but that's so negligible when you could be slinging Comet Storm for 3000. Also cut Brisela. Neither card is a staple on its own, and the chances of drawing 2 cards naturally in RW are way too bad to justify it. And so forth. After that, cut the bad cards and narrowest answers from Sunforger. Are you ever going to tutor up Fork or Fury Storm when you could be winning with Comet Storm? Nope. So cut them. Also cut bad answers like Molten Influence -- anybody will pay 10% of their life in exchange for their best spell resolving.

Illumination is actually pretty decent. Cut Artifact Blast when you put it in.

Razia's Purification is really bad unless you can immediately recur everything or phase out or something. Which means it's not going to be good with Reito, either.

The Orrery is good, but expensive. Proxy it first.

Cut the Ferocidons. Doesn't matter if they gain life, if you're dealing 300 with Comet Storm. Let that sentence be your mantra! (;

Paradox Engine might actually be your best 5-drop, since it helps...cast comet storm for 300. See how I'm approaching this?

Planar Portal is bad because you can't really ramp to 12 without infinite mana, which you could use to cast Comet Storm for 300. (Hope this isn't getting annoying, but I'm trying to make a point.)

Purity, Sunglasses, the Anthem, Burst of Energy, are all not as good as 1) casting Comet Storm for 300, 2) stopping your opponents from winning before you can cast Comet Storm, or 3) helping you find the pieces to make infinite mana to draw your deck (with a non-tapping engine like Staff of Domination) so you can cast Comet Storm.

See what I mean? You don't have to use the Comet Storm as a wincon if you don't want to, but my point is that you should find your best combo (whatever it is), and stick with it, and commit to it, and build in redundancy. It's better to have one combo with 10 ways of happening than 10 combos with 1 way of happening.

Lowdown: Removed the "Protection from" combo & Odric, Lunarch Marshal. Added Reito Lantern as a "Super-Recursion" card In here. Removed Ghitu Chronicler as Sunforger puts instants in for free & counts as being cast. Keeping Paradox Engine for versatility, & Geode Golem is removed...

Added Guttersnipe for an Infinite Burn combo w/ Sunforger & Reito Lantern.

Replaced all 5 Artifact Tutors w/ one that can search for anything in the deck: Planar Portal. Unsure about cutting Emrakul's Hatcher as Eldrazi Spawn make for not just Mana Sources, but also Chump Blockers, & it can be flickered... Must keep Radiate for the fact that nonpermanent cards are a big player here. Same for Paradox Engine + Boros Signet + Sunforger combo for endless Sunforging...

Only 7 CMC is the Commander. Impossible to remove.

  1. I am, nevertheless, working on several decks that are casual (With an edge that still challenges.): Gorm the Great & Virtus the Veiled, & Kozilek, the Great Distortion (Still WIP...)

  2. I know the 2018 Precons were trash, but just thinking of individual cards would be for the best, as this years' secondary commanders were better anyway for the most part...

Regarding my Comment #11: I am focused on cEDH by this point. Besides, my WIP Kozilek deck is literally worse than 90% CASUAL. Worst case about >4 cards? Both 6 Drops are staples here, Same for Endbringer for . 5 drops aren't any better: has Emrakul's Hatcher, which is a 2-4-1. Radiate Manipulates mu Instants & Sorceries even when casted by Sunforger. Neheb, the Eternal makes Mana, even after the entire Combat Phase, & even after addition Combat Phases & Main Phases. "Stallion." I claim. Dunno about Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker yet... MAYBE I'll remove Apocalypse + Teferi's Protection, if it doesn't mesh so well w/ cEDH... However, I won't remove Paradox Engine; stuff like Isochron Scepter copies of Fork for Nonpermanent copying, & Sunforger Activations. Especially the latter.

I reduced those to just Planar Portal, & I have Counterspells at least: For Artifact Blast for enemy impurities, Molten Influence beats most spot removal (Unless it has Split Second.), Pyroblast/Red Elemental Blast beats Blue Permanents & Counterspells, Even Dualcaster Mage can copy an enemy Counterspell if you want, countering the real thing. is a little bit different: Dawn Charm has a mode that stops a spell that targets you, Lapse of Certainty puts target spell on top of the enemy Library, & I plan to find a card that can compliment w/ this. Ideas? Mana Tithe is a Planarshifted Force Spike, which can be decent sometimes... Rebuff the Wicked is the same as Dawn Charm, but at a permanent instead. Is Illumination Good?

I hope this can help w/ the decisions on Monday; I'm thinking of Keeping Razia's Purification, & keep Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith + Sol Ring w/ Reito Lantern in hand. I hope this works as a combo that's good...

I'll be waiting until then, landofMordor. I dunno what high drop cards to cut...

Currently you have three cards that are not Modern-legal (Chain Lightning, Fireblast, and Molten Influence). I would consider the following replacements:

  • Eidolon of the Great Revel. This is, perhaps, the most Red card one can play. It hurts you, but will end up hurting your opponent far more. The vast majority of spells in Modern are under 3 CMC, meaning most every spell your opponent will play will ping them for 2 damage. While you're playing a lot of spells that will ping you for 2 as well, they also deal 3 damage to your opponent, so you come out ahead in that exchange.

  • Skullcrack is a solid burn spell with some pretty nifty additional effects.

  • Searing Blaze will often hit your opponent for 3 and take out one of their creatures.

The next thing you'll want to do if you wish to play competitively is make a sideboard. A sideboard is a set of 15 cards that do not go in your main deck, but can be substituted in and out before games 2 and 3 of the round. You're a bit limited in mono-Red in what you can place in your sideboard, but some solid options would be Abrade (as shirouu suggested--I'm just not sure you want to mainboard a spell that can't hit an opponent), Ensnaring Bridge (to deal with creature-heavy decks, substituting out your own creatures), and Relic of Progenitus (to put pressure on Delve and other graveyard shenanigans).

That will give you a very solid deck to start. If you feel like upgrading down the line, consider adding White for Boros Charm and Lightning Helix (and Deflecting Palm, Path to Exile. and Wear // Tear in the sideboard). You can also add one copy of Stomping Ground, fetch lands, and a sideboarded Destructive Revelry to deal with artifacts/enchantments.

But adding those colors can be quite expensive due to the fetch/shock lands required. You'll have a solid list with mono-red, albeit one that can't deal with enchantments.

Mana Tithe could be a good way to counter removal unexpectedly, and can be useful if you control Mana Barbs. Another option could be Molten Influence.

The biggest problem I see here by far is how conditional/temporary some of your removal is. Chaos Warp, Molten Influence, Dash Hopes, Snap - all of these either give your opponent a very powerful choice as to how your spell affects them or fails to entirely remove the problem. Reality Shift, Negate, Go for the Throat, and Flame Slash are all far more reliable options.

Secondly, if the Bolas meme is the primary objective, then why are you running such a large number of expensive spells? Rune-Scarred Demon is somewhat understandable, but you really need to cut down on 5+ CMC cards, lest you find yourself not having enough flexible cards to keep your gameplan consistent whilst you get an Elder Dragon on board.
