dingusdingo on Budget Kefnet Turns

4 years ago

I enjoy the Kefnet Turns build, haven't seen it before for this commander and I think its rather neat. You should focus exclusively on assembling your win and remove the extra side cards, like your mill sub-theme. I also think you should replace expensive removal and interaction with cheaper pieces, as you're less likely to cast them off the top with Kefnet. I also think you should add in more ways to discard and also tutor to top of deck. Your combo requires a handful of specific cards and also to be in a specific spot in your library, so topdeck manipulation and tutors help immensely.

My complete list of changes would be

Dismiss -> Counterspell

Everdream -> Ponder

Exclude -> Arcane Denial

Precognitive Perception -> Concentrate (You're never copying the addendum with Kefnet)

Supreme Will -> Mana Leak

Thought Collapse -> Mental Misstep (Every deck runs 1 cmc spells so Misstep is unbelievable value for EDH)

River's Rebuke -> Wipe Away

Zndrsplt's Judgement -> Vapor Snag (That card is hard to link to :O )

Mistfire Adept -> Long-Term Plans

Riverwise Augur -> Sleight of Hand

Niblis of Frost -> Mystical Tutor

Drowned Secrets -> Serum Visions

Fraying Sanity -> Preordain

Precognition Field -> Careful Study

Psychic Corrosion -> Fabricate

I think its worth noting

That to combo off, you need Library + Aminatou's Aug + Dino + Turn card + Commander. That requires 4 cards outside your commander, 3 of which are exactly specific. Finding another enabler or outlet to reuse your turn spells or another way to put cards on top would help the consistency of this deck a lot. Running more draw and tutors to topdeck also lets you value copy a turn spell to start chaining turns, and even if you don't hit an infinite loop getting 3 or 4 extra turns will get you much closer to establishing the lock. You should shave off alternate wincons and focus on getting infinite turns, because once you have them you've won.

Firebrand Archer , Abbot of Keral Keep , Jeskai Elder , Mistfire Adept , If you can and are willing to due it's price, Monastery Mentor , Ojutai Exemplars , Soulblade Djinn , Soulfire Grand Master in case you are willing to trade some card draw instants for Bolts, Helix and such spells, even so, with her ability it could get your spells back, Strongarm Monk , Monastery Swiftspear and Student of Ojutai , those will be my suggestions to achieve something like a monk type tribal thing? also some of them help your commander such as the one that taps creatures and gives flying, Voltron seems like a good theme for this guy, if you put up a description sooner, tag me in! I wanna see it, and if you want to come by my profile to see some of my decks, will be appreciated! :)

Teleportal is definitely going on my buy list. I'm not attached to to many of them except maybe Monastery Swiftspear and Mistfire Adept but most fire is one of my favorite monk cards. Thanks for the suggestions I'll start pricechecking those.

Archetype of Imagination - Costs too much, your drakes will fly. Other creatures should be for USEFUL utility or defense.

Dragon's Eye Savants - Very weak effect. If you really like to know their hand, Telepathy does that much better (don't recommend either)

Galecaster Colossus - Has some synergy with some wizards. It costs too much, even with potential synergy. You could replace this with an expensive counterspell or just more ramp/card draw.

Graceful Adept - See Reliquary Tower, Venser's Journal and Thought Vessel for a better replacement.

Mistfire Adept - Costs too much for what it does.

Paragon of Gathering Mists - Anthem affects are ok. They are usually considered "win more", meaning, if you are winning (have an advantageous board state filled with drakes/creatures), then they will help you "win more." If someone wrathed while you were tapped out and you draw this, then it will be effectively useless. You want to limit the number of "dead" cards in EDH.

Shorecrasher Elemental - No real way to abuse it (unless I'm missing something?). Replace with a 3 CMC counterspell, draw or bounce effect.

Simic Fluxmage - You are not playing simic, don;t use this card. Very weak effect with little to no synergy

Simic Manipulator - See above

Thanks, hoardofnotions! Yeah, in general this deck typically tries to kill with commander damage as quickly as possible, but has other beats as backup, so Mistfire Adept is good for giving evasion to Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest.

I don't have any Snow-Covered Mountains in this deck because the average price for each version is above $2, and that's the limit for my local budget playgroup. You make a good point about artifact lands, which I had in the deck to synergize with Metallurgic Summonings. I replaced the Seat of the Synod with Faerie Conclave and Great Furnace with Swiftwater Cliffs (often better than Izzet Guildgate). My deck is mostly blue, but I'm keeping all the vivid lands since fixing for a three-color deck can be challenging.

I agree with you on Arcane Denial over Hindering Light. Oona's Grace seems a bit weak, and since I don't think I'll typically have more than 4 cards to exile from my graveyard, I think I'd rather have Plea for Power than Treasure Cruise.

What do you think? And thank you for the recommendations!

I really like the list! I'm jealous of the mana curve for sure!

No Snow-Covered Mountain? Why the artifact lands? They seem to open your mana base to artifact destruction for no benefit?

It looks like your deck is mostly blue cards, might be worth taking out Vivid Crag for a blue-red dual land (Izzet Guildgate) that way you can run out of vivid counters to play your nonsense and still have access to red.

Is Mistfire Adept good enough? Do you win most games with commander damage or random beats backed up with your commander?

maybe swap Mystic Speculation for Oona's Grace?

Arcane Denial is easy on the mana base and might be better than Hindering Light, also the fallen empires version is super cheap$

Treasure Cruise could be good with all this spells going to the graveyard, delve the full amount!

Sorry it took me a while to get back with you guys.

Daring Apprentice I like your use of cards for draw power and card advantage, thanks for sharing! I have added a Command Tower and Mystic Monastery, I'm not sure why I didn't have them in the initial build lol. And I'm also totally using Kaho, Minamo Historian, she's awesome! I'm planning on using Jori En, Ruin Diver for card draw, he's pretty great. Especially with my low curve. My card advantage is going to be different from yours though, I'm wanting to be able to survive late game so my card advantage is taking form in cards like Frost Titan, Homura, Human Ascendant, and Yosei, the Morning Star. I don't want to have a bunch of high costing cards, I'm planning to try to keep it to 9 or 10 total. I'm also still wanting Thassa, God of the Sea, I just haven't picked her up yet.

Hey back Beio53! I have looked at cipher spells. I've got a Hidden Strings set aside, I'm just trying to figure out where I want to slide it in! I also enjoy the Hands of Binding. I feel like they would pair beautifully with my other tapping abilities, I'm just trying to figure out where to put them. I'm not sure how I feel about the Jhessian Balmgiver, it feels pretty fragile to me. I have been thinking about Mistfire Adept for a while, in addition to an Elusive Spellfist (I LOVE his art), and a Mystic of the Hidden Way. I like the Spectral Flight a lot but funny story; I'm actually wanting to cut my number of enchantments down to make room for a few more creatures while keeping my instant/sorcery count high. I'm not sure what I'm going to do quite yet honestly.

Ey UnleashedHavok, I like the unblockable synergy you've got going here. Since I've got a lot of artificial prowess from my yasova deck, I think there's some interesting pieces you could use. First of all, Leering Emblem is perfect for shu since you'll have basically triple prowess but for your creature spells as well. Also, I see that you like rebound spells like Emerge Unscathed. Have you looked into any cipher spells? They're sorceries to trigger your prowess then they become a pseudo enchantment on a creature that recast themselves when they deal combat damage to a player: Hands of Binding to tap a creature for two turns, trigger prowess and double strike, swing with shu, and the first strike damage will trigger another free casting of it for more prowess boost in your normal combat damage. Hidden Strings is incredibly versatile and cheap. To be totally honest, I'm not sure that you need to worry as much about defense if you can tap the board out with these effects but that's your decision. Also, for a steady source of flying/evasion, Jhessian Balmgiver, Mistfire Adept, or Spectral Flight are cheap and EFFECTIVE options. I see Quiet Contemplation and Niblis of Frost in your suggestions and maybeboard: cannot sing their praises enough in a prowess deck. Anyway, love shu and he's right there with Rakdos, Lord of Riots for my next deck build. Hope to see how it progresses!
