why tidespout tyrant? also if you plan on keeping him i would add in Merrow Witsniper and some o-drops (ie: ornithopter, walking ballista) would thornbite staff be good for you? why the inclusion of trophy mage? as you have no 3 cmc artifacts wouldn't Tribute Mage be better for you?

Mental Note, Merrow Witsniper, Merfolk Secretkeeper, Thought Scour, you name it. Sorry for the spam, just trying to help optimize the deck (even though my suggestions may not, in fact, help you do so because I don't necessarily know much about deckbuilding in this lane/whatever it is that I'm talking about)

Kurush: Thanks for taking the time to comment, and to start: Yes, I agree with you, on both accounts. I didn't have the space left to give this deck the "Jank" label also. =P

Secondly: Yeah, I'd totally be interested in collaborating! Two heads are better than one, as they say. =)

I've done some playing with this deck and Selhoff Occultist was a tragic underperformer. It was a weird idea that I should have known better to try, but, eh. Weird ideas are what I do. I've been considering multiple options as a replacement, such as:

  • Switching over to Shriekgeist in that slot, like you did.
  • Trying Soaring Show-Off (which I mentioned to you on your deck because I think group-hug-draw alleviates the sting of getting milled a bit--people like drawing cards).
  • Something unique-ish, like adding Sage's Row Denizen and either the Show-Off or Merrow Witsniper and using Ghostly Flicker or Peel from Reality instead of normal Unsummon effects to re-trigger the Denizen... but that may be a whole new deck idea entirely.
  • Or, hell, I could just put Mind Sculpt in there and almost guarantee the Phantasm gets activated, but that's so boring.

As far as Vile Rebirth and Beckon Apparition, you're right again. And again, I'll use just "creativity" as an excuse, lol. They are cool cards, and I still think they could be built-around, but this probably isn't the place for supporting that experiment also. =(

Anyway, I've checked out your decks, and I'm definitely going to borrow some of your card choices. I still want to add Soaring Show-Off though. =P =D

Let me know what you think about my ideas for replacements. =) Meanwhile I'll pick something and give it a few plays soon. Let you know how it went.

Mana base: You could add a couple of Prairie Stream to have some really good targets to fetch. A single copy of Moorland Haunt could also be useful, of only to make use of your graveyard. Also, you need a bit more land (you have only a little card draw, and want to both play creatures and keep mana up for playing things in your opponents turn). But you'll need 23 or 24 lands, so you are sure to hit land in the early game. At 20 lands, you hit the first 3 turns (mostly), but after that it takes a while before you hit land number 4.

Bounce: I'm not too keen on bouncing your own creatures (when you could blink them). In general, it takes more mana than you'll have available in a typical game of modern. In many cases, you use instant-speed blink to avoid removal spells, and if you Unsummon your own creatures, they're still removed, from your opponents point of view (even if it's a bit less permanent than they would have liked). More Cloudshift, less Saving Grasp.

Consider whether something like Janjeet Sentry really is worth it. 3 mana for a creature with a tap-ability, which also requires some payment. Perhaps Blade Splicer seems boring, because "it's what everybody uses", but ask yourself how often youd like to have a 1/1 and a 3/3 creature for 3 mana (with and additional 3/3 token for every blinking of the 1/1 creature), and how often you'd wish for Janjeet Sentry for the same mana. There might be legitimate scenarios where sentry is better, but in general I think Blade Splicer is the better card. Besides, tap-abilities and blinking are a really poor mix.

Mill: erhm... you've nowhere near enough mill to actually have that as a viable win-con. Especially Merrow Witsniper seems like a miscalculation - you spend 2 cards (say, Saving Grasp and Merrow Witsniper), to mill 1 card. It's going to take some time and effort, before that reaches the level of a Tome Scour. Minister of Inquiries maybe seems like it could be ok, if you have something really good to spend eneergy on (2 energy for 1 mana is ok, right?).

Soul Warden should be in SB. Good card, but not useful in all games.

Flickerwisp deserves mention. It does not have flash. But you can blink it with instants and that's almost as good. The real strength of that card, is that it can target any permanent, including your opponents. It can break up tron for a turn, reset a planeswalker or Aether Vial or... or... so many other things.

BlackCoffeeMagician has the right of it. He Duress' you for one card? hit him with DreamTwist, Memory Sluice, Merrow Witsniper, Thought Scour, Tome Scour and others like that.

Quest for Ancient Secrets can help recover from excessive discarding.

Of cores if you are looking for infinite mill via infinite etb Then Merrow Witsniper, Halimar Excavator, or Thassa's Devourercould take Altar of the Brood's place in the combo. Then Muddle the Mixture Would let you tutor for Strionic Resonator, or Halimar Excavator, while Dizzy Spell would let you tutor for Altar of the Brood or Merrow Witsniper
