All right Squee_Spirit_Guide. It's time for the build-around challenge! When I crafted the list for Balaam__ I hand selected things I believed would interest them.

And without further ado, I introduce the "Martyr or Magus" challenge? Will you pick...

Martyr?

Magus?

So do these creatures intrigue you? We have plenty of options for building possibilities, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on other ideas if this falls short.

Phyrexian Altar, has never been printed in a Modern legal set and a similar effect simply won't be, it's broken. Of late there has been discussion around Krark-Clan Ironworks (probably the closest thing) and its namesake deck KCI, essentially KCI is the most likely deck to be hit with a ban for doing the sort of combo your talking about, all be it with colourless mana.

That out of the way, normally it isn't wise to mix infect creature with non-infect creatures, even something like Necroskitter which has a degree of synergy. Infect wants to kill fast and normally uses evasion Plague Stinger and Inkmoth Nexus for example to deliver that damage. You seem to want something more in the Blood Artist style, but with infect... I guess a Grim Lavamancer granted infect would be close, or a card like Jaya Ballard, Task Mage or Magus of the Scroll that plays in a similar space.

As a competitive casual deck, this is fine, probably even fun, but I'm not sure what you want to do is really that viable in Modern. I am not a fan of the dies to removal argument, but Anger of the Gods is quite likely to scrub your whole board and it is played. This just feels a little unfocused, your not building an all out infect deck and your not building a legal combo deck. Sticking with your idea though I suspect your best plan is a bit more control and use cards like the Lavamancer to deliver your damage. I hope this was of help, good luck with your brew.

Each of the colors have three magi from the cycles, one based on an enchantment for each color Magus of the Moat, Magus of the Future, Magus of the Abyss, Magus of the Moon and Magus of the Vineyard) one based on an artifact for each color (Magus of the Disk, Magus of the Jar, Magus of the Mirror, Magus of the Scroll and Magus of the Candelabra), one based on a land for each color (Magus of the Tabernacle, Magus of the Bazaar, Magus of the Coffers, Magus of the Arena and Magus of the Library) and one based on an sorcery for (the new Magus of Balance, Magus of the Mind, Magus of the Will and Magus of the Wheel). There is a fifth blue card called Magus of the Unseen, but that's not part of any cycle since it doesn't reference any single famous card. Probably next set they'll have a green Magus based on a sorcery.

Also, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sower of Discord on here.

You might do well to run Spiteful Visions, which gives you more card draw, more damage and a red permanent for Kederekt Parasite.

Personally, I'd take out the discard-hate (Liliana's Caress, Waste Not etc.) and focus solely on punishing card draws (or vice versa!) That way you don't have to risk the awkard possibility of having say, a Master of the Feast and Liliana's Caress not helping each other out.

If you take this route, other cards to consider include Toil / Trouble, Sudden Impact and Barbed Shocker. You could also just run more general "punisher" cards to put your opponent in a tough position - say, Mogis, God of Slaughter, Vexing Devil, Manabarbs and Magus of the Scroll.

dbpunk Magus of the Vineyard, Magus of the Library, Magus of the Candelabra, Magus of the Disk, Magus of the Tabernacle, Magus of the Moat, Magus of the Bazaar, Magus of the Jar and Magus of the Future would like a word with you :)

That being said there was already Magus of the Moon, Magus of the Arena, Magus of the Scroll, Magus of the Coffers, Magus of the Abyss and Magus of the Mirror before they made Magus of the Will and Magus of the Wheel.

So the current magus breakdown is: White 3, Blue 3, Black 4, Red 4, Green 3. So You could be in luck with them evening out the total number of magus!

That's good - I would be a little surprised if Lightning Bolt wasn't in your deck. And I love the Magus of the Scroll won me so many games. Go to combat, swing, tap Magus naming Lightning Bolt, reveal, cast Lightning bolt. Good times.

I used to run a deck very similar to this with Magus of the Scroll. Also, Maybe swap out Lava Spike for Lightning Bolt? Same cost, instant speed and you can hit creatures if needed.
