Harvester Troll

Creature — Troll

When Harvester Troll enters the battlefield, you may sacrifice a creature or land. If you do, put two +1/+1 counters on Harvester Troll.

My main suggestion for making this deck more effective is prioritizing. Your deck will run much more consistently if you have less 1 ofs and putting 3 or 4 of cards that really help your deck, so you're more likely to draw into them when you need them.

For example, Yeva's Forcemage, Peema Outrider, Embraal Bruiser, and Harvester Troll don't seem to do a whole lot for the deck. You'd be better off running more of things like Bellowing Tanglewurm.

As for some suggestions of things you don't have yet, I can tell you like casual, so I won't get too in-depth with super-competitive combos and things. If you like Ring of Xathrid, consider Ring of Kalonia. If you have both on a 2-color creature like Lord of Extinction, the ability will stack and it will grow even faster.

On the subject of 2-color creatures, I really like Creakwood Liege for this deck, he'll boost all your creatures and make even more creatures to boost. His ability will also stack for 2-color creatures, giving them +2/+2. Baloth Null is also a solid budget card. Works as a big creature, and gets back some of the creatures you're sacrificing.

I don't think Predator's Gambit will help you much, because in testing I usually had several creatures out, but there are plenty of solid enchantments to replace it with like Gift of the Deity or Aspect of Gorgon.

Ballzanya, thank you for your advice. I'll break down all of the cards that you recommended and my personal opinions on each of them. In addition, if I were to put any of these in, what would you cut in order to keep a reasonable curve?

Card Break Down

  • Undergrowth Champion is too slow of a card for standard. It is at a minimum a turn four card in order to have protection for him, but even with that, every black deck or white deck has easy guarenteed removal for him, either through -X/-X effects, destroy effects, sacrifice effects, or exile effects.
  • Oran-Rief Hydra is another card that is way too slow for standard. For many of the same reasons as to why the champion is bad, it's too easy to remove him and he has not nearly as large of an affect on the board compared to a card like Verdurous Gearhulk, which my thoughts on which were simply costing too much for the deck and not having enough synergy with Animation Module, which the deck is built around. Also Reflector Mage.
  • Harvester Troll is another card similar to Verdurous Gearhulk, but is, again, still worse than the gearhulk, and sets me back on resources.
  • Woodland Wanderer has a large enough board impact to be considered, but I personally feel that splashing a third colour makes my mana significantly weaker, and thus the deck in its entirety, unless I changed the entirety of the deck.
  • Fretwork Colony in this deck often acts as a Bitterblossom that also acts as a massive source of damage that quickly snowballs out of control if left unchecked. While it certainly does have downsides, I have found that its strengths outweigh these weaknesses. Why do you think that the card is so bad?

Undergrowth Champion? Harvester Troll? Oran-Rief Hydra? Also, if you have enough ways to add a third color, Woodland Wanderer wouldn't be too bad.

Since you've asked for suggestions, I offer mine based on our friendship on tappedout.net.

Congratulations on your strong finish at FNM! I can imagine how a burn deck may cause problems. Pulse of Murasa from the sideboard may remedy that matchup, but I do not suggest maindecking it automatically. Also in the sideboard against burn deck, consider Jaddi Offshoot. Retreat to Kazandu is a great target against enchantment hate that typically targets Hardened Scales. Do you have room for it in the sideboard? I think Plummet is better than Longshot Squad, because of casting cost alone, despite ignoring its synergy.

With fighting on the schedule, Pharika's Disciple would destroy any-toughness target. It may also earn its own +1/+1 counter without supporting spells. At instant speed, Lead by Example smells like it should be automatically included somewhere -- sideboard?

I wonder- would Saddleback Lagac serve you better than Hangarback Walkers? I know I type with blasphemy, but I fear it and Managorger Hydra are too fragile in the early game. I would like to know how often the 1/1 flying thopters matter in early-to-mid games. Likewise, I question how often Surrak, the Hunt Caller's mechanic is needed, especially knowing you field smaller creatures when cast; is haste needed? I like Harvester Troll over Surrak, for the same cmc. Perhaps a slight trimming of those creatures for Saddleback Lagac and some trolls may help propel your +1/+1 counters strategy, while offering a sexy 3+ power attacker or fighter.

I cannot argue with your land count. The only suggestion I could offer would be to consider 2x Evolving Wilds to thin your mana if drawn. Honestly, you probably want as many lands to tap as possible each turn, so two should be enough to fetch lands while thinning two non-tap lands in the process.

I like how your deck falls below 2cmc, but this can be misleading with Hollaback Girl. I am excited to see this deck evolve, and what suggestions you may consider from other builders, too! Play and be well!
