Harvest Wurm

Creature — Wurm

When Harvest Wurm enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you return a basic land card from your graveyard to your hand.

Harvest Wurm and Night Soil for flavor (eeew) but I can’t remember what paired well with the wurm. Too bad you don’t have white to pick from!

Strip Mine, Wasteland and Dust Bowl - They feed your theme, and subtly deny resources to your opponents.

Crop Rotation, Groundskeeper, Harvest Wurm, The Binding of the Titans, Grapple with the Past - All cheap spells on theme that might help lower your mana curve.

Goblin Charbelcher, because you probably run out of lands in your deck regularly.

Wave of Vitriol, because I really want to put it into a deck, but I haven't found the right fit, and I think you have it right here.

+1 for creativity, for sure. But also +1 for designing this deck at nearly $1/card. That's impressive. Now, please excuse me while I ruin the two reasons why I really like this deck.

The Gitrog Monster is at its best when it is in a classic Loam build. Which is to say, it has Life from the Loam, and preferably Crucible of Worlds. Neither of those are budget friendly, and both are completely uncreative, since it's basically "Gitrog 101." I can't help a whole awful lot here with the creative part, but I do have some insights into the budget version aspect:

Personally, I also think that easy self mill, like Perpetual Timepiece, Shard of Broken Glass and Splinterfright, as well as dredge spells like Golgari Grave-Troll, Golgari Thug, Dakmor Salvage, Shambling Shell and Stinkweed Imp are certainly helpful as well.

Not that I think your deck needs all of the cards I've listed here, but they are all worth consideration. You've put together a formidable budget list already, and I wouldn't want to muck it up too much.

Cheers!

Overall I worry that you play too many expensive cards whose value isn't guaranteed enough when they hit play, like Thraben Foulbloods and Shambling Shell. I know you want a good card for the 3 spot on your curve, but I feel both of these are pretty weak. I say that, but I don't have any ideas about what to put in their place.

That said, you might want to consider cards like Scythe Tiger who is strong, fast, shrouded, and lets you choose to put one of your artifact lands in play to speed up delirium. I'm also a fan of Harvest Wurm, who unfortunately probably won't work for your purposes since it specifies basic land. Cadaver Imp could be really good depending on how it interacts with your deck, and Unearth goes well with it.

If you want a sideboard replacement for your finishers that is less vulnerable to control, Blastoderm is always a good threat.

Most of my suggestions either stray away from your core deck theme or maybe won't help with it's current form, but I think they're good to keep in mind.

Currently testing with green splash instead of black. Hooting Mandrills, Harvest Wurm and especially Mwonvuli Acid-Moss with Search for Tomorrow are great cards into this deck. And some green suspend card can be viable too.

Hey there 5finga, thanks for your suggestions.

I considered Horned Kavu, but the deck only has 12 other creatures, and Harvest Wurm and Hooting Mandrills can both be difficult to cast. After I playtest the deck and determine how often I can afford to recast Harvest Wurm, I may try out Horned Kavu.

The one less mana that Arbor Elf costs compared to Werebear can really make a difference, especially in a deck where I’m sacrificing my own lands. Otherwise I would definitely run it over the elf.
