Gnawing Zombie and Invisible Stalker don't match the deck

cncfan on ✨ $8 Lifegain ✨

From my experience with BW lifegain as a casual player, some cards that will work well are thins like Ajani's Pridemate ($0.40-$1.00) as it will get bigger for each instance of life gain. Another method is with Festival of Trokin ($0.36-$0.99) or Chaplain's Blessing for quick life. Something that could really benefit you is Whip of Erebos as it would give all of your creatures lifelink. A potential win condition is with Gnawing Zombie as you will be able to start killing them from your tokens (in case there is no way for you to deal damage directly with your creatures) but I truly like the deck.

I like the concept as it seems original. Some thoughts I had:

  • I'm not a huge fan of the Altar of Dementia. Granted, it's your kill condition and it's a sac outlet, but you can likely accomplish this another way. Corpse Blockade, Carrion Feeder, Nantuko Husk, and Phyrexian Ghoul all count as sac outlets (and you could argue that the latter three could be game winners as a result). The diregraf captain works as your win condition in this regard and you can stay on theme with zombies. For that matter Gnawing Zombie also works, but his sac ability requires an activation cost so you can't really go infinite.

  • In the above example, some combination of Diregraf Captain, Vengeful Dead, & Plague Belcher all work as win conditions for that matter.

  • I presume that "forget" is a way to dump Haakon into your graveyard and not something you really intend to play on the opponent. In that case, maybe consider a card that has additional use like Forbid or Rites of Refusal instead. That way you get a little more utility out of the card (in countering a spell) and also get Haakon in the 'yard.

  • For that matter, you could also stay on theme with Zombies and use Cryptbreaker, Necromancer's Stockpile, Skirk Ridge Exhumer, or even Zombie Infestation. The first two are the strongest options as they also help filter your deck to get to the cards you want. They can also make use of excess lands you may draw throughout the game.

I like the deck overall though. Nifty idea.

For Card Draw: Gate to the Afterlife, Carnage Altar, Scarecrone, and/or Altar's Reap better than Sign in Blood

For Land Ramp: Wild-Field Scarecrow, Pilgrim's Eye

Graveyard Hate: Heap Doll, Martyr of Bones

additional Life Drain Effects: Death Cultist, Gnawing Zombie, Krovikan Horror

Discard package: Augur of Skulls, Brain Weevil, Nezumi Bone-Reader

Hell's Caretaker over Apprentice Necromancer

1 v 1 game suggestion for unfun Hope of Ghirapur

Okay, first of all, I would cut Geralf's Masterpiece, Geralf's Mindcrusher and Forgotten Creation, they're simply not worth the mana cost. Always try to keep your curve low! Instead you should add Geralf's Messenger, it's a tad more expensive($), but it's a really good card, probably the best zombie card out there. Other zombies you should consider to add:

Plague Belcher - target your Gravecrawler turn 4 after combat and you've got a 5/4 with menace in combination with your opponent loosing 1 lige, plus you can cast Gravecrawler again. Potential trigger for both Diregraf Colossus and Prized Amalgam. Having Plague Belcher + Diregraf Captain in play at the same time strongly disencourages the opponent sweeping the board, since he/she will loose a lot of life.

Diregraf Ghoul - 2/2 for 1 mana, it's an okay card.

Cryptbreaker - Bit more expensive, but it can discard a Prized Amalgam, giveng you a nice 2/2 blocker, and gives you card advantage.

Relentless Dead - Also a bit more expensive, but this card is pure win, attack with it and if it dies you can return it to your hand and return a 1 cmc zombie to the battlefield, triggering Prized Amalgam.

Somewhat interesting zombies:

Dregscape Zombie

Gnawing Zombie

Lifebane Zombie - Sideboard

Zombie Outlander - Sideboard

Other spells:

Go for the Throat/Victim of the night - Nice removal, which that is the best depends on the local meta.

Dark Salvation - You can pay X=0, giving you a 1 mana kill spell if you have enough zombies. If you have a lot of mana that you can't use otherwise you get a couple of tokens. A solid card.

Night's Whisper/Sign in Blood/Read the Bones - Card draw is always good, pick one of them and have 2-3x.

For lands Choked Estuary is nice, 4x of it and 4x of Drowned Catacombs + 14 swamps should be a good enough mana base.

Personally I'd consider cutting Unbreathing Horde, Butcher Ghoul, Cemetery Reaper (you want to keep your GY), Dimir Aqueduct, Bone Splinters, Ghoulcaller's Chant, Necromancer's Stockpile and maybe Rotting Rats in favor of the above.

Some more expensive card you can consider in the future:Watery Grave + Polluted Delta - Shock and Fetch lands are almost always good.

Fatal Push - Great removal.

Liliana, Death's Majesty/ The Scarab God - 1x of one of those, it's a bit win-more, but it can be nice to have on in the deck.

Creeping Tar Pit

Death Baron/Lord of the Undead/Undead Warchief- Great lords.

JararoNatsu thank you for setting me straight on Gnawing Zombie. I really like the idea of adding in Diregraf Captain and your other suggestions. Would Carrion Feeder's ability make it an infinite combo for +1/+1 using Rooftop Storm + Gravecrawler? If so would that trigger Diregraf Captain's life loss ability?

JararoNatsu on Infinite Loops

Keep in mind that Rooftop Storm does not change the cost of Gnawing Zombie's mana ability. It only changes the cost to cast the creatures themselves. Therefore there really isn't an infinite combo going on here.

Plague Belcher from the new set may work well here. So would Diregraf Colossus.

If you're going to be sacrificing a lot of your own creatures, then cards like Diregraf Captain and the Skaab variety of Zombies would work well here. The former deals direct damage (as does Plague Belcher) when you lose a Zombie and the latter is made by exiling creatures from your grave. These would serve you well until you can set up your win condition.

Also, I don't know how much control you want, but I am always a fan of Compelling Deterrence.

Right now, this is a super casual deck that, as the person above mentioned, would be good to play friends with. Keep working on it, though.

P.S. I have two Zombie token decks on my profile if you wanna look at them. Could give you some ideas.

Hey all, I am new to magic and I could really use some advice on a deck I am trying to build. It is centered on using Gnawing Zombie + Gravecrawler + Rooftop Storm. It basically creates an infinite loop of life loss. I fear the problem is that it will take too long to get the combo out. Any ideas?
