Gleaming Barrier Discussion

Skyscanner and Desecrated Tomb look like important additions to an artifact/token theme Shirei deck. Skittering Surveyor seems handy too. If/when I come back to playing, that's definitely what this is going to turn into.

Going back to Ixalan also gives me Pitiless Plunderer (thanks shub!) Gleaming Barrier is also great mana and (non-creature) artifact token creation, Dusk Legion Zealot has great potential but it's risky if you use it too often.

I'm hoping for something good in mono-black with Undergrowth from Ravnica, but we'll wait and see.

Green333 I play tested last night and made some changes to the deck. With this deck I went 4-0. Even though I won every match I can see that some changes were necessary. I added two Protean Raider's and a play set of Abrade. I actually put the Abrade in before I started playing. I took out Gleaming Barrier all together along with Storm the Vault  Flip. thanks for your input on the deck I'll see how it does this FNM.

Green333 the reason I use Gleaming Barrier is its a body. Its my main and only blocker. All other creatures I use swing every turn barrier is there to absorb damage and help me not loose as much life. Plus it's an artifact that triggers Storm the Vault  Flip even quicker. Even if it blocks and dies I don't loose that extra artifact to help flip Storm the Vault  Flip. I don't understand how someone doesn't like Insult it doubles your damage. If your creatures can't be blocked why not let them hit face for twice as much. Chart a Course has a raid ability what others would you suggest?

Gleaming Barrier and Lyra Dawnbringer don't really help you out here. I kind of see your point in using Gleaming Barrier for Phyrexian Scriptures with Fountain of Renewal to give Karn's third ability a buff, but I would be focusing on the first two abilities more so than anything by the way this has been built. Aryel, Knight of Windgrace or Resplendent Angel would be a better candidate than Lyra. You could use Mox Amber instead of Gleaming Barrier and use Ajani's Welcome in place of Fountain of Renewal.

pruttel85 so the Phylactery Lich plays a fun role I think in here. So usually I will attach him to one of the inert artifacts like Navigator's Compass, Fountain of Renewal, and Gleaming Barrier. This provides them the dilemma that most times those cards are just sitting there for minimal effect. Now you gotta waste a spell to blow up a cheap artifact just to get to the phylactery that's fine. Especially when they have already served their purpose (gaining life) or the barrier getting me the treasure which can then be animated as a 5/5 one way or another or ramp. Big point being it gets people to waste spells on things that could eventually be killing traxos or zahid or my other animated artifacts . Plus that's only if they have that artifact removal so a lot of times if he hits field it's a big panic moment for them if they don't know how to deal with him. Forces them to make some early decisions that if they chose wrong really affects the game later for them. Don't know how many times I've had someone abrade something to kill the Lich and then next turn Traxos, Scourge of Kroog comes out and they have the "god damn it" moment because that's what they wanted to save abrade for but had to use it early to deal with the perceived threat.

as far as the control base of sides there is some trimming that could be done. Negate, Unwind, and Syncopate all work well against control and this deck can be played slower with removal taken out at that point to deal with it. My sideboard only has a little accounting for control. If it's an issue I'd say 3 negate , 3 unwind, 2 syncopate in the side for you or 4/2/2. The sideboard is of course always open to interpretation.

Phylactery Lich (after some playtest) seems quite hard to cast in general or at least without Navigator's Compass, thing is, Compass is usually your Skilled Animator target and tapping it feels pretty bad.

Second, i dont understand the inclusion of Cabal Paladin, 4 mana do nothing cards are really bad, i would prefer something like Skyscanner which is also a much better animator target.

Third, consider Gleaming Barrier, 4 toughness is relevant, and the treasure is also relevant.

Last, PLAY 2 x Karn, Scion of Urza and 2 x Tezzeret, Artifice Master!!!! they are completely worth it, specially since your list has a "COMPETITIVE" tag.

I'd drop 3x Diamond Mare and 3x Fountain of Renewal and sideboard Gleaming Barrier.

Add some legendary creatures: Isareth the Awakener and Tetzimoc, Primal Death and then you could also add Karn's Temporal Sundering or Yawgmoth's Vile Offering

You should take out Gleaming Barrier and Hollow One and add Foundry Inspector, Mishra's Self-Replicator, and maybe put Jhoira's Familiar in the sideboard in case you need flying blockers? Love this deck btw
