Gird for Battle Discussion

You might add in more multi-target spells to get the most out of the heroic mechanic - Gird for Battle , Launch the Fleet , and Cauldron Haze are all good budget options.

Love this deck, I made a version of it based on the list.

I have found Gleam of Authority underwhelming unless you have managed to get your Cloudfin Raptor up using Thrummingbird . Because most of the enchantments are cheap, if you don't know you have Celestial Ancient coming up it's hard to justify keeping stuff like Ordeal of Thassa and Favorable Winds in the hand to activate the triggered effect of Ancient later on. However usually if you get get some proliferation from Thrummingbird + Collective Effort , you have a viable bird army by T3 or T4.

In the 1-drop slot I swapped Faerie Seer for Healer's Hawk . I have been thinking of adding Sky Tether as basically a 1 mana Pacifism for removal. Blessed Spirits also rounds out the curve nicely and fits right in with the theme. I happened to have a Starfield Mystic which also dovetails nicely. I found Gird for Battle as a nice mana sink on T3 or T4 to get the proliferation / boosts for High Sentinels of Arashin if you have any "naked" creatures. To boost card draw, one could also add Winged Words and/or Curiosity / Curious Obsession which would get more enchantments in the hand. Invocation of Saint Traft is also a great combo with Cloudfin Raptor . Finally, Eidolon of Countless Battles can be a nice T4 bomb, boosting up one of your smaller flyers.

I know a lot of those changes make it a little less budget, but we're still talking like <$15 here.

With Ajani's Pridemate front and centre, you might want another life-gain trigger. Evolution Sage is almost a must for any counter deck as you just keep adding counters. In place of Huatli's Raptor (if you have Evolution Sage ), you might consider something like Pelt Collector , which can be generating +1/+1 counters from turn 2. Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants would also work in this deck.

The dilemma with this type of deck will always be the choice between 1-drops and early counters - growing an attack force or being more aggro from the start and battling to find room for full sets of Stony Strength , Pledge of Unity , Evolution Sage and other cards that accelerate the rate at which you collect +1/+1 counters. I found it easier to build a deck if I focused more either on life-gain or on counter-gain.

Life-gain decks would then bring in cards like Fountain of Renewal , Twinblade Paladin and Take Heart . With more focus on counters, you want full sets of Gird for Battle , Battlefield Promotion and you will rely more on Evolution Sage for proliferation.

I honestly don't know what strategy is stronger, but have had fun playing Ajani M.

I tried Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter in a few games, and he ended up sitting in my hand most the time. Pollenbright Druid is one cheaper, and after it does its thing it is mildly useful as a chump blocker. Gird for Battle is great though, I dropped two of the Courage in Crisis to add it, its nice having a cheaper +1/+1 option.

Have you considered Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter ? He might help early game by getting on +1/+1 counters on your creatures, and giving you a mana source if you find yourself low on lands. Maybe swap out Pollenbright Druid for him. I also might want to add Gird for Battle as it is super early way to get counters on creatures.
